Man who allegedly struck woman at Riverside ‘No Kings' protest is arrested
Police on Monday arrested a man accused of driving an SUV that struck a 21-year-old woman marching at a 'No Kings' protest in Riverside. She remains hospitalized in critical condition. Russell Prentice, 58, of Riverside was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and hit-and-run causing injury, the Riverside Police Department said Tuesday. He was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside. Candase Wenzel was also arrested. The 39-year-old Riverside woman is accused of having a role in taking the SUV more than 30 miles away to the remote unincorporated area of Phelan in the Mojave Desert, 'intentionally destroying and concealing evidence,' the Police Department said. Prentice allegedly fled after driving a black SUV toward a crowd of protesters marching along University Avenue, between Orange and Main streets, and striking the woman at around 9:10 p.m. Saturday. Police haven't identified the victim, but a woman who called herself a friend and created a GoFundMe page identified her as Alexa Carrasco. 'She was rushed to the hospital' and was in intensive care with 'life-threatening injuries,' wrote the friend, Leslie Hernandez. Hernandez told The Times on Monday that Carrasco was in critical condition in the intensive care unit but was stable. Carrasco's friends told KCAL-TV that she suffered severe skull injuries as well as a cracked rib, punctured lung and broken leg. After police issued a plea to the community for tips to identify and locate the suspect, officers were able to find the SUV's license plate number. Detectives were then able to identify the suspect, police said, and made an arrest in Riverside. Riverside Police Chief Larry Gonzalez expressed his thanks for the tips that people sent to police.'We're grateful for the information they provided,' the chief said in a statement. Anyone else who has information on the hit-and-run is asked to contact Riverside Police Det. Mike Smith at MikeSmith@ or (951) 353-7103, or Det. Nic Cantino at NCantino@ or (951) 353-7104. Friends ID woman hit by SUV at ‘No Kings' protest: ‘She was so proud to be out there'
The Riverside Police Department is seeking help from the public two days after the driver of a black SUV rammed through a group of demonstrators in downtown Riverside, running over a young woman who remains in critical but stable condition. The department is asking for help in identifying and locating the suspect in the incident that occurred around 9:10 p.m. on University Avenue between Main and Orange streets, according to Officer Ryan J. Railsback, a spokesman for the department. Railsback said a 'speeding SUV drove around the march and struck a female pedestrian before fleeing the scene.' Although police have not released the name of the victim, a woman who identified herself as a friend created a GoFundMe page and identified her as 21-year-old Alexa Carrasco. 'She was rushed to the hospital' and was in intensive care with 'life-threatening injuries,' wrote the friend, Leslie Hernandez. She told The Times on Monday that Carrasco remained in critical but stable condition in the ICU. Carrasco's friends also told KCAL that she suffered severe skull injuries as well as a cracked rib, punctured lung and broken leg. 'Alexa is loving, outgoing, and full of life,' Hernandez wrote. 'She's the kind of person who always shows up for others, and she was so proud to be out there using her voice. She did not deserve what happened to her.' Railsback said paramedics 'treated the victim at the scene. Then she was transported to a local hospital with significant injuries in stable condition.' At the time of the collision, there were two protests in the area — one was part of the 'No Kings' rallies taking place across the country. Another was a demonstration against raids by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. 'The groups merged early on,' Railsback said. 'And we have no reason to believe the driver was part of this protest.' Investigators are not only seeking the driver but also trying to determine if the incident was intentional or politically linked. 'We don't know if it was accidental or not,' Railsback said, 'but we are investigating it as an assault with a deadly weapon at this time.' Video taken by demonstrators and posted on social media shows the black SUV stopped on University Avenue when a group of protesters begin to gather around the vehicle. One demonstrator can be seen bumping into the car's left taillight while another uses an object to smash the light. The car then drives forward, around demonstrators and speeding past Orange Street before dragging the young woman and running over her body. 'We are aware of the various social media videos that are being circulated and are using those to help us identify the driver,' Railsback said. The public is asked to contact detectives at (951) 353-7103. Anonymous tips can be made through Crime Stoppers.

Yankees Brutally Dump Veteran Pitcher 24 Hours After Calling Him Up From Minors
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Carlos "Cookie" Carrasco started six games for the New York Yankees this season, providing much-needed help to an injury-battered pitching staff. But with a 5.91 ERA and 2-2 record, the Yankees designated Carrasco for assignment on May 6. The 38-year-old, 16-year veteran — who was signed to a minor league deal by the Yankees before spring training but pitched his way onto the big league roster — accepted his demotion to Triple-A, but on Sunday he got the call. He would be rejoining the Yankees for their final game of a three-game set against the Los Angeles Dodgers. About 24 hours later, Carrasco was gone again. He did not get into the Sunday game against the Dodgers, and the Yankees then placed Carrasco on outright waivers, meaning he can now be claimed by any other team. NEW YORK, NY - APRIL 25: Carlos Carrasco #59 of the New York Yankees looks on during the game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium on April 25, 2025 in New York, New York. More New"It seems unlikely that Carrasco will be claimed. He just cleared less than a month ago and hasn't been in great form since," explained Darragh McDonald of MLB Trade Rumors. "However, it's also theoretically possible that there's a team which has been snakebit by injuries of late and is more willing to take a chance on Carrasco now than they were just a few weeks ago." Carrasco broke into the major leagues with the Cleveland Guardians (then still known as the Indians) in 2009. In 12 seasons with Cleveland, he won 91 games against 83 losses with a 3.91 ERA. Cleveland traded him to the New York Mets, for whom he pitched from 2021 to 2023 — earning a total of $38 million over those three seasons. More MLB: Trade Idea Lets Yankees Get Rid of Carlos Carrasco For MLB-Ready Righty Prospect After he spent last season back in Cleveland, the Yankees offered the Barquisimeto, Venezuela, native a $1.3 million minor league deal for this year, which he accepted. Now, it appears that his brief, up-and-down Yankees career is over. "Not unexpectedly, Carlos Carrasco was with the Yankees for just one day as pitching depth protection and was placed on outright waivers," reported New York Post columnist Joel Sherman. "With no unexpected setbacks, the (Yankees) were lined up to activate Fernando Cruz from the IL on Tuesday." If Carrasco goes unclaimed on the waiver wire, he can elect to declare free agency, or accept another minor league assignment if the Yankees choose to offer him one. Yankees Waive Veteran Starter Amid Injury News: Report
Yankees Waive Veteran Starter Amid Injury News: Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Yankees continued to shift around their pitching depth on June 2, as reported news of veteran starter Carlos Carrasco hitting waivers again surfaced on X. Advertisement Carrasco only rejoined the Yankees' active roster on June 1, as the Pinstripes elected to call him back up after exhausting much of their bullpen on Saturday. The Yankees did not end up needing Carrasco for the Sunday Night Baseball matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers, meaning he will not take the mound during his latest brief stint in the majors. Veteran starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco pitches for the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in Carchietta-Imagn Images New York Post insider Joel Sherman reported the Carrasco news on Monday, and he added that this move hints at an injury returnee being activated in his place. "Source: Not unexpectedly, Carlos Carrasco was with the Yankees for just 1 day as pitching depth protection and was placed on outright waivers," Sherman relayed. "With no unexpected setbacks, the NYY were lined up to activate Fernando Cruz from the IL on Tuesday." Advertisement Getting Cruz back will be key for the Yankees' bullpen going forward. Before his injury, Cruz maintained a 2.66 ERA over the first 21 appearances of his 2025 campaign and Yankees tenure. The 35-year-old reliever also struck out a ridiculous 35 batters in just 23.2 innings pitched, yielding a strikeouts per nine average of 13.3. Of course, with Yankees closer Luke Weaver suffering a hamstring injury while stretching on Sunday night, according to manager Aaron Boone, Cruz's return could be even more vital over the next few games. It's currently unclear if Weaver will require a stint on the injured list. As of now, it seems Weaver was pulled from entering the game on Sunday out of precaution, but we'll wait and see if there's more to this injury.
