Lisa Field wins special election for late Rep. Carol Doherty's Taunton seat
TAUNTON, Mass. (WPRI) — Democrat Lisa Field has won the special election to replace the late state Rep. Carol Doherty, according to unofficial results. Field narrowly defeated Republican Larry Quintal in the race for the 3rd Bristol District, which became vacant after Doherty died in February at the age of 82. The district contains parts of Taunton and Easton. BACKGROUND: 2 candidates seek late Rep. Carol Doherty's Taunton seat in June 10 election As of Wednesday morning, Field led in the unofficial tally by 21 votes. Field, who works for the Massachusetts Nursing Association, was up by a slim margin in Easton, while Quintal narrowly led in Taunton. Quintal, a Taunton city councilor, posted on social media Tuesday night he's requesting a recount. Heading into the race, Republicans hoped to capitalize on momentum from the 2024 election and flip the seat back to their column. President Donald Trump earned 47% of the vote in Taunton last November and Republicans flipped a state senate seat. Doherty's seat was also formerly held by Republican Shaunna O'Connell, who was elected mayor of Taunton in 2019. 'Lisa's dedication to working families, strong public schools, and vibrant local communities inspired voters and energized our Democratic values,' the party said. 'We look forward to all she'll accomplish on Beacon Hill!' According to Debra O'Malley, a spokesperson for the secretary of the commonwealth's office, there are two types of recounts that could be requested: Districtwide and precinct level. Candidates are required to submit 38 signatures from registered voters in the district for a districtwide recount, or 10 for a precinct recount. Election officials have until 5 p.m. on June 25 to certify the results. If a recount happens afterward and changes the results, there would be a recertification, O'Malley said. TAUNTON — Lisa Field, a Taunton Democrat who works for the Massachusetts Nurses Association as an associate director, has declared her candidacy for Carol Doherty's old state representative seat. "My dear friend Carol Doherty was a true public servant. She left behind a legacy for us to build upon and I plan to do exactly that," Field said in a press release. Doherty, a Taunton Democrat who died on Feb. 15 of pancreatic cancer, represented the 3rd Bristol District, which consists of part of Taunton and part of Easton. Specifically, the district consists of Precincts 4A, 5, and 6 in the south-west of Easton, and Ward 1 Precincts A, B, Ward 2, Ward 5, Ward 7 and Ward 8 in the west of Taunton. A special election to fill the seat was announced on March 10. Field was the co-founder of a group called Clean Air Taunton, which opposed a proposed sludge biosolids processing plant that would have been located in Taunton. "I know what families in Taunton and Easton are going through because I've lived it: family and friends struggling with substance-use, and the crushing weight of rising costs of living — even losing my home," Field said in her press release. "My faith, family, and close friends are what got me through it and I know that together we can overcome anything."
