Philippine mobile leader Globe Telecom Inc. has mitigated supply chain risks with diversified Chinese and Western vendors, its chief executive officer said, as companies navigate US-China tensions. 'We are agnostic in a sense. We really focus on the business,' Globe Telecom CEO Carl Cruz said in an interview with Haslinda Amin at a Bloomberg Media Group event in Manila on Thursday, when asked about making a choice between China and the US.

Globe Telecom has recorded 61.6 million mobile subscribers as of end-March 2025, up 5% from 58.8 million the same period last year. Globe also said its broadband customers grew to 1.83 million as of end-March 2025, up from 1.72 million the same period last year. The telecommunications company said 87% of its total service revenues in the first quarter of 2025 came from data, up from 85% the previous year. Globe president and CEO Carl Cruz said it is a strong sign that Filipinos are embracing a digital-first lifestyle. "We're not just going digital for the sake of it. We're building solutions that reflect real needs, real affordability, and real stories of connection. That means helping students with their online learning, helping an OFW see their family over a clear video call, or allowing small businesses to receive payments digitally. These moments are what matter,' said Cruz. As of April, GFiber Prepaid (GFP), on the other hand, earned a standout Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 67—a strong indicator of satisfaction and trust among value-conscious households. With 70% reload rates—the highest among prepaid fiber brands—and a 53% quarter-on-quarter subscriber growth, the product is expanding rapidly into income-challenged households, said Globe. "These numbers are indicative that customers prefer our services. We'll keep innovating, investing, and pushing technology forward, but always with the customer in mind. A total of 235 new 5G sites all over the country were activated by Globe Telecom in the first quarter of 2025 with the help of Artificial Intelligence. Globe said the 5G sites support over 9.5 million devices nationwide. 'AI is central to this scale, providing live operational dashboards, build prioritization, and predictive maintenance across network assets,' it said. Aside from this, AI is also reshaping how Globe hire, plan, solve problems, and connect. 'Today we're using AI to speed up automation,' said Carl Cruz, Globe President and CEO. 'We're also using it to elevate and improve the quality of decisions, and make our operations more responsive. Innovation only matters if it creates real impact.' The telecom company said its Human Resources group has fully integrated AI into its recruitment process through the use of HireVue, an AI-powered platform that combines video interviews with skills assessments to help evaluate candidates more objectively and effectively. Globe piloted its AI-powered video and coding assessments for digital, IT, and tech-focused groups at the start of the year. The successful pilot led to a full-scale rollout across all groups, including its portfolio companies. The shift replaced manual pre-screening and cut the overall hiring cycle from weeks to just a few days. Processing qualitative data alone, which previously took three to five days, was cut down in half, enabling faster candidate turnaround and more confident decision-making from hiring teams. As a result of these efforts, Globe received the Impact Star Award at the 2025 HireVue Customer Excellence Awards last April. The award celebrates organizations that have made a meaningful impact and driven innovation through skills-based, tech-enabled recruitment. Globe was previously named a Rising Star at the 2024 awards, highlighting its continued commitment to modernizing hiring for both speed and quality. AI has also played a pivotal role in strengthening Globe's Risk Management processes. By automating data capture, transcription, and insight generation, AI significantly reduced data processing time—delivering results within days instead of weeks. Real-time dashboards also allowed teams to visualize and compare risks at both group and company levels, making data more digestible and actionable for leadership. This automation also helped in mitigating human bias in data interpretation, and enabled more accurate linkages between identified risks and corporate strategy. Globe said it is exploring AI-powered tools for proactive risk scanning and identifying emerging threats before they escalate. Meanwhile, Globe's Network Group is leveraging AI in streamlining internal processes to enhance service quality. Teams now use AI from coding and data forecasting to anomaly detection and repair diagnostics. The company has also implemented AI-assisted power-saving solutions through the EdgeWise platform, optimizing energy consumption by temporarily shutting down low-traffic transceivers in its Radio Access Network. In the area of Marketing, AI is being used to accelerate content creation, simplify workflows, and improve internal knowledge sharing. Teams rely on tools like Gemini and ChatGPT to draft memos, presentations, and reports, while design platforms like Canva Magic Studio help quickly produce high-impact visuals. Knowledge bases and technical guidelines are also being managed more efficiently using NotebookLM and custom-built AI search tools. Beyond productivity, AI enables quicker, more inclusive storytelling—from employee communications to public campaigns—allowing the Marketing team to move at the speed of the business. As part of its effort to make reliable, high-speed internet accessible to more Filipino households, Globe is now focusing on both fiber and 5G technologies. 'Connectivity is an enabler of progress,' said Carl Cruz, Globe's president and chief executive officer, adding that by expanding their network infrastructure, they are unlocking access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for millions of Filipinos. "Globe remains steadfast in working with industry partners and the government to ensure inclusive digital access,' he further said. The telco firm said GFiber Prepaid (GFP) fits into the everyday lives of users as it offers a simple plug-and-play setup, reloadable options, and easy management through the GlobeOne app. It noted that a lot of households prefer services that do not tie them down with contracts or require big upfront payments. It added most users of GFiber Prepaid top up every three to four weeks, which keeps them connected without breaking the bank. Globe is also expanding reload options through AMAX and ECPay. On top of fiber connectivity, Globe is also pushing its 5G WiFithrough Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) which makes it possible to deliver fast, reliable internet in places where fiber is not practical, especially in underserved communities. This approach not only helps cover areas lacking fiber connectivity but also offloads traffic from Globe's mobile network, improving overall service quality. Globe said it has laid out a clear plan for 2025: expand access, deepen engagement, and enhance the customer experience. This approach ensures that both new and long-time users enjoy better connectivity designed around their needs. Globe is also working to close the digital gap in remote areas. The goal is to bring fiber connectivity to 100 more Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs), giving people in these communities access to digital services that were previously out of reach.
