Arizona Cardinals offseason: 5 takeaways from minicamp, offseason program
The Arizona Cardinals are done with their offseason program and off until the start of training camp. They completed their three days of mandatory minicamp this week after two weeks of Phase 1 strength and conditioning workouts, three weeks of Phase 2 football work and two weeks of OTAs. The Cardinals had great participation and overall good health, from what we know. Advertisement But what can we take away from the offseason work the Cardinals had? Takeaways from Arizona Cardinals' offseason program The team is healthy While a handful of players were limited in action in practices, by and large, it was all players coming off of injuries last season. They avoided any new injuries, which is key. It appears that every one should be ready to go once training camp roles around in a few weeks. No drama Everyone was in attendance when they needed to be. No one said anything outlandish. There have been no contract issues. Since Jonathan Gannon became head coach, offseason work has been steadily boring, the way it should be. Youngsters bulking up The Cardinals' 2024 rookie class has come into the offseason program bigger and stronger. Receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and defensive lineman Darius Robinson came in noticeably yoked. Running back Trey Benson said he added about seven pounds of bulk in the offseason and guard Isaiah Adams has gotten stronger as he is on track to be the starting right guard. Impressive defensive depth This is from their moves in free agency. The defensive line runs eight deep right now with a mix of proven veterans and promising high-end youth. The outside linebacker room went now is Josh Sweat, Zaven Collins, BJ Ojulari, Baron Browning plus youth! Kyler Murray locked in Now in Year 3 in this program, he knows he is entering his prime and now is expecting wins and even Super Bowls. You have to love it. Will Johnson contract: Why the Arizona Cardinals haven't signed their 2nd-round pick yet
The Arizona Cardinals' lone insigned draft pick for this year is cornerback Will Johnson, their second-round selection in the 2025 NFL draft. They even have first-round defensive lineman Walter Nolen signed. But that is normal. Cards Wire's Howard Balzer noted this week that only two of the 32 second-round picks were signed. All but one first-round pick have been signed by their teams. Advertisement Why is that? Well, first-round picks have fully guaranteed contracts. Second-round picks get guaranteed salaries, but that is negotiable. Some get three guaranteed years. Some get two guaranteed years. Some get two fully guaranteed and a partially guaranteed. Johnson was the 47th pick in the draft, so if we look at last year's No. 47 pick, New York Giants safety Tyler Nubin, we can expect Johnson to get two fully guaranteed years and a partial guarantee on a third. Nubin's first two years had fully guaranteed salaries. In his third year, he is scheduled to get $1.49 million in salary. Of that, $1.21 million is guaranteed. Advertisement Then, of course, are the contract details as to when the signing bonus is paid, what language is included fro behavioral stipulations and such and more. But we can expect something similar for Johnson. When will it happen? The Cardinal probably won't set the standard, as it was a pick in the middle of the second round. One picks ahead of Johnson start lining up and getting signed or if it happens from the bottom of the round up, that is where we will see Johnson getting his contract signed. NFL.com prediction leaves Arizona Cardinals out of top 10 offenses
The Arizona Cardinals weren't an elite offensive squad a year ago, but they were pretty solid. They finished the season 12th in points and 11th in yards, although some of those points did come from special teams. They had a good but not great year from quarterback Kyler Murray and both running back James Conner and tight end Trey McBride had career seasons. Advertisement Looking ahead to 2025, Gennaro Filice predicted the 10 best offenses in the coming season. He left out the Cardinals. His top 10: Buffalo Bills Tampa Bay Buccaneers Baltimore Ravens Washington Commanders Detroit Lions Denver Broncos Philadelphia Eagles Green Bay Packers Cincinnati Bengals Kansas City Chiefs The Cardinals are scheduled to face the Bucs, Packers and Bengals in 2025. Arizona should be in that list. Perhaps they should not be expected to be that, but they certainly have the talent. McBride and Conner should be just as good. Second-year running back Trey Benson is ready to add more to the running game, giving them potentially a real 1-2 punch. Marvin Harrison Jr. should be better, and that will allow for better production from the other receivers. Advertisement On top of that, their defense should be significantly better, which will put the offense in much better position to score points. If the Cardinals are what they believe they can be, they will end up in the top 10 by the end of it all. The Arizona Cardinals have completed their offseason program for 2025, wrapping up mandatory minicamp. It concludes an offseason of major moves on defense in free agency and the draft. I was a guest on Proline TV's Arizona Cardinals offseason report card to discuss offseason moves, draft picks and insights for what the depth chart will look like during the season. Host Greg DePalma and I ran down the Cardinals' moves in free agency, where the new additions fit, who will have the biggest impact. The biggest impact will come on defense as the offense remains largely the same. We run down the Cardinals' draft picks and where they will figure in as rookies in 2025. I talk about how linebacker Cody Simon and cornerback Will Johnson are the two rookies likely to have the biggest roles. I wonder how the deep defensive line room will shake out and am bullish about both sides of the ball, giving my season expectations for the team. Watch the full episode below.
