Stats SA decries suggestions unemployment rate overstated after data questioned
JOHANNESBURG - Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) has pushed back on suggestions that the country's unemployment rate is overstated after its data was called into question. Capitec Bank CEO Gerrie Fourie sparked debate this week when he called for unemployment figures to be revised, claiming that informal traders in townships or villages were being misclassified or ignored by Stats SA. Fourie believes the official unemployment rate is closer to 10% and not the current reading of 32.9% reported by Stats SA in the first quarter figures. ALSO READ: • ActionSA calls on Ramaphosa to fire Labour Minister Meth over worsening unemployment rate • Concern over South Africa's first quarter jobs bloodbath Statistician-General Risenga Maluleke said the informal economy was not being ignored. He said this sector was accounted for in the Quarterly Labour Force Survey and the Survey of Employers and Self-Employed. Maluleke believes the data by the agency is beyond reproach. "I have no reason whatsoever to believe that members of the public are misleading us in relation to their employment status. "This data we are collecting has been showing consistency over time in terms of how employment occurs. Otherwise, at some stage, we would have picked it up." South Africa's unemployment rate is among the highest in the world, something Stats SA said needed the intervention of government, business, civil society.

South Africa Statistics Chief Defends Jobless-Data Calculations
The head of South Africa's statistics agency defended the methodology of his organization's unemployment data after the chief of the nation's top bank by customers said misclassification of traders means the jobless rate was much lower. Capitec Bank Holdings Ltd. Chief Executive Officer Gerrie Fourie recently said that the unemployment rate — which was 32.9% for the first quarter and is among the highest globally tracked by Bloomberg — would be closer to 10% if self-employed people and those working in informal markets are counted, according to Business Day newspaper.

Netball prodigy needs funding for dream Singapore tour
For 18-year-old Amahle the invitation to the tour in Singapore is nothing short of a dream realized. Organized by Blue Running Sports International, the tour offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase her talent on a global stage. But while her dedication and hard work have brought her this far, a major financial hurdle now stands in her way. The total cost of the trip is R70,000, excluding additional expenses, an amount her family simply cannot afford on their own. Although Amahle was raised in a loving and supportive home, her mother, Thembeka Radebe, says that covering such a large sum is beyond their means. 'The cost is overwhelming,' Thembeka shared. 'We're appealing to anyone who can help to support our daughter. She has immense talent in netball, and this opportunity could change her life.' Amahle is already a respected name in local netball circles. She currently captains the Dolphins under-17 team, where her leadership and skill on the court have earned her widespread recognition. Speaking about her journey, Amahle highlighted the discipline and passion the sport demands. 'Netball isn't just a game—it's something you have to love and commit to completely,' she said. 'It challenges you physically and mentally, and it teaches you to stay focused both on and off the court.' Despite her athletic ambitions, Amahle remains grounded in her academics. She's committed to maintaining a strong academic record, knowing that education will play a key role in shaping her future, no matter where her netball career takes her. Amahle is one of just four players selected to represent her school on this prestigious tour. If she can raise the necessary funds, she will depart on December 5 and return on December 15. The Thusi family is deeply appreciative of any support received and hopes the Newcastle community will rally behind Amahle to help her seize this life-changing opportunity.
