Conservancy event blends nature, history and science in Union County

LEWISBURG — The Dale-Engle-Walker Property on Saturday was the place to learn about biodiversity, fossils and history. The Merrill W. Linn Land & Waterways Conservancy hosted the Living Landscape Program on the 137-acre property located at 1471 Strawbridge Road, Lewisburg. This event was in coordination with the Bucknell University Humanities Center and the Union County Historical Society. "We're all around nature, but we don't necessarily know exactly what we're looking at," Thom Rippon, of White Springs, said. "It's important to understand that, especially in the farming part of Union County. We're learning today about both the geology and biology of our wonderful land." Rippon, a member of the Conservancy, said he often participates in events like this. "It's all about preserving nature, understanding nature and conserving nature," Rippon said. Rippon and 25 people walked around the property to learn more about the geology, plants and wildlife and history of the land. Guest lecturers from Bucknell University were Dr. Beth Capaldi, Professor of Biology; Claire Campbell, Professor of History, History Department Chair, Affiliated Faculty in Environmental Studies & Sciences; and Dr. Jeff Trop, Professor of Geology. More than 410 million years ago during the Silurian Period, the Dale-Engle-Walker Property was a tropical marine setting with a reef. The nearby limestone quarry is made up of organic debris from this time period, according to Trop. Trop displayed limestone rocks with fossils in them as well as pointed out places in the 1793 house where fossils can also be located. He also explained that a few drops of acid on the limestone rocks can cause it to bubble and produce a sound and smell from the reaction. Letti Graboski, 11, of Danville, said she loves coming to the programs because of the nature walks. "The nature walks are calming," she said. Irmgard Seidl-Adams, of Lewisburg, said she is a frequent visitor to the property. The Dale-Engle-Walker is a "real gem" in Union County, she said. "The geology introduction was really nice, because I had no idea about the geology of this place," she said. "I've walked it many times. I love the plants on the ridge, but I had no idea. I'm happy with what we got." Capaldi said many large trees were part of Pennsylvania until it was forested. Those trees held a lot of communities: insects eating the foilage as well as birds eating them. "When forests are fragmented, it influences biodiversity by reducing it," Capaldi said. "It also changes ecosystem services. The ways that organisms can move naturally through normal, ecological processes of predation and competition are affected." Capaldi said the property has many unique plant communities on the limestone rocks that only grow in habitats like these. "When you go for a walk here, you're walking your dog or you're going to walk birds, there's a lot other things that are happening right behind the scenes, and that's one of the reasons why it's so valuable to us," Capaldi said. Campbell said early settlers in early 18th and 19th century believed that nature needed to be improved by humans. They believed it was "wasted" until humans applied effort, intellect, capital, technology and labor to improve the land from its wild state. She described it as a "sense of colonial entitlement, a sense of possibility of expansiveness and acquisition." Samuel Dale meant for the house to be impressive and a statement of ownership and possession. The Conservancy will host a second part to the Living Landscape Program in the fall. The date is to be determined.

More info West Lothian singer Lewis Capaldi has been spotted out with a famous pal after stepping away from the spotlight. Lewis, 28, was enjoying the football with Ed Sheeran on Sunday. The duo watched the Premier League game between Ipswich Town and West Ham. They were snapped laughing together in the stands, appearing in high spirits despite West Ham beating the home team with a 3-1 win, reports the Daily Record. Capaldi, who previously stepped away from the spotlight in 2023 due to health issues, is rumoured to be back in the studio making music. The Someone You Loved hitmaker announced he was taking a break from the limelight following his Glastonbury performance almost two years ago, where he was seen visibly struggling with Tourette's syndrome, which he was diagnosed with in September 2022. The Glasgow-born singer, who grew up in East Whitburn, told fans he had noticed his tics happening as early as 2018 and explained how they can trigger his anxiety with both health conditions taking a huge toll on his mental health and ability to perform. Tourette's syndrome is a neurological condition which causes an affected person to demonstrate tics which is an involuntary, sudden, repetitive movement or sound. These tics can be simple (like eye blinking or throat clearing) or complex (like repeating words or making animal noises), according to the NHS. After struggling through his Glastonbury set, Capaldi made the tough decision to cancel all of his shows for the remainder of the year and told fans he would be taking a break from music "for the foreseeable future". The show, which was held on May 2, saw Capaldi perform six songs, including his 2019 hit Someone You Loved, in aid of the Campaign Against Living Miserably (Calm), a mental health charity he has previously raised funds for. Meanwhile, Ed Sheeran, recently announced an exciting string of shows at Portman Road Stadium in July. He also made a surprise appearance at Radio 1's Big Weekend in Liverpool over the weekend. Ed and Lewis have been good mates for several years now with the 34-year-old previously conveying their tight-knit friendship after he sent him a ridiculous housewarming gift in 2021, which required a forklift to get rid of. The Shape of You singer hilariously revealed he wanted to get Lewis a 'super annoying' gift after he moved into his first home in South Lanarkshire, which Sheeran actually picked out for him. So naturally he opted for a 7m dinosaur which was commissioned and shipped in from China. Previously speaking to Clyde 1, he said: "When he got his house, I was like I want to send him a house warming present that's like really annoying, so you know like massive vinyl dinosaurs like the one the ones they have in zoos? Like 7 metre things? I got him one of them made from China and delivered." Join Edinburgh Live's Whatsapp Community here and get the latest news sent straight to your messages. He added: "He had to get a forklift truck to get it off, he had to go into town and rent the forklift truck to get it off - in solidarity I got myself one too so I've got the exactly the same dinosaur." Ed explained how Lewis had been looking for a new place to live and the A Team hitmaker found the listing on RightMove within ten minutes. He said: "Let me tell you something about Capaldi! He goes 'Oh Ed I'm looking to find a house', so I was like 'oh cool', and I just went on Rightmove and typed in Glasgow within about ten miles and I sent him one, and went 'how about this?' and he went - 'yeah yeah cool!' Host Garry Spence asked: "What he bought it?" as Ed replied: "Yeah, he's moved into it!"

Lewis Capaldi's love affair with Fat Sam's Live and Dundee

Dundee has always been a special place for Lewis Capaldi. The city has played host to some significant milestones in his musical journey. Capaldi performed at the opening of Dundee V&A in September 2018 having just launched his singing career in 2017 with his self-released viral hit Bruises. The Bathgate balladeer had only been to Dundee once before. He watched The View perform live at The Doghouse on Brown Street in 2013. 'I went up with a bunch of my pals and it was incredible,' he said. 'I was a huge fan when I was younger, and I still am. 'Kyle Falconer is an incredible songwriter. 'The rest of the band are amazing players. 'I must have seen them about 14 times in my life.' The Courier described him as an 'up-and-coming Scottish singer-songwriter' before he supported Primal Scream at the V&A concert at Slessor Gardens. When he took to the stage, Capaldi joked to the crowd: 'If you don't like chubby guys singing sad songs you're not going to enjoy this.' There were no gimmicks. His raw talent was evident. He stole the show. And yet, things were about to get even better. Someone You Loved was released as a digital download in November 2018. The piano-led weepy ballad was the third single from his Breach EP. It gradually gathered momentum. Someone You Loved broke into the Top 10 in February 2019. It climbed to Number 1 where it stayed for seven weeks consecutively. Capaldi performed at Fat Sam's Live in Dundee on May 17 2019 which was the same day his debut album, Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent, was released. It was part of a link up with Broughty Ferry-based Assai Records. The only way to get tickets was to buy a pre-order bundle through Assai. The show sold out within minutes. Capaldi performed with a full band. He opened with his single Grace. Capaldi introduced and played songs from his new album. He also showed off his incredible vocal range and self-deprecating humour. The crowd sang every word back to him including the new songs. Fat Sam's owner Tony Cochrane was hugely impressed. 'He was down to earth and you couldn't meet a nicer guy,' said Tony. 'He sounded even better live than on record. 'You got the feeling you were witnessing something special. 'In between songs he spoke with the crowd and was very funny.' Tony shared an incredible video of Capaldi singing Someone You Loved. The Courier said Capaldi was 'someone the city loved'. 'He was very humble and appreciated the support,' said Tony. 'Lewis didn't strike me as someone who took his success for granted. 'That's part of his charm.' Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent topped the charts. It outperformed the rest of the Top 10 combined. Someone You Loved became the most-streamed song of all time in the UK. It was nominated for a Grammy Award. Capaldi attended the ceremony in January 2020 in Los Angeles. A familiar face was right there with him. Tony is a partner of LA publishing firm AFM which produced the official Grammy Awards souvenir programme which is one of the key keepsakes for artists. He congratulated him for his nomination with a special message in the programme. Tony described him as 'Scotland's finest music export'. They caught up afterwards on the red carpet. 'We showed him the programme and he was delighted,' said Tony. 'It was a lovely moment. 'He also spoke about how much he had loved playing Fat Sam's Live. 'That was a real source of pride for us.' Tony gave him a framed copy of the programme message for his mum. In November 2022 he announced his second album would be released in May 2023. Capaldi was still writing about failed relationships on Broken By Desire to Be Heavenly Sent which included Forget Me, Pointless and Wish You the Best. A UK tour included dates in Aberdeen and Glasgow in January 2023. It was later announced that Camperdown Park in Dundee would host Radio 1's Big Weekend in May 2023 with Capaldi named as Sunday headliner. He announced he would return to Fat Sam's Live before closing the Big Weekend. Twice. Two intimate acoustic shows would feature a Q&A session with fans. 'He specifically asked to play Fat Sam's Live to promote the album,' said Tony. 'Maybe he thought we were his lucky charm? 'It was special because Lewis could fill stadiums all on its own. 'He was delighted to come back.' Tickets from Assai Records included a copy of the new album. They sold out – again – within seconds. He took to social media afterwards to thank his Dundee fans and said it was 'very, very surreal' and that 'he could not wait' to play the shows. BBC Radio 6 Music's Matt Everitt led him through a brief Q&A. The audience were invited to ask questions and he finished with four songs. There were requests to sign things and pose for pictures. He even climbed into the crowd. Capaldi jumped the barrier to greet 80-year-old Janet Kirk from Forfar. It was her first-ever gig. He gave her a cuddle and posed for a photograph. It made her day and summed up the magic of Lewis Capaldi. 'It was my birthday in February,' said Janet. 'My grandson asked if there was anything I would like. 'I said I would love to meet Lewis Capaldi.' Grandson Oliver managed to get tickets and the singer's attention during the Q&A. 'I was delighted,' she said. 'I listen to him all the time on the radio. 'His voice is brilliant.' He signed off by performing The Pretender, Haven't You Ever Been in Love Before?, Wish You the Best and Before You Go, complete with audience singalong. Everyone – again – went home happy. He returned to Dundee for Radio 1's Big Weekend. Capaldi told the crowd how much he loved his time at Fat Sam's Live. 'I was here last week and played at Fat Sam's just down the road,' he said. 'It was a beautiful experience. 'I will never forget it.' Capaldi still managed to deliver a masterclass at Camperdown Park in May 2023 despite struggling from a bout of Tourette's syndrome tics. He changed the lyrics from Glasgow to Dundee during Wish You The Best. Capaldi took a break from performing after the Glastonbury Festival before making a surprise return to the stage at a charity gig in Edinburgh in May 2025. He is set to make his music comeback with a third album in the works. The final word goes to Tony Cochrane. 'Third time lucky?' he said. 'Hopefully he will remember Fat Sam's when he launches his new album. 'After all, he wouldn't want to break the charm…'

Lewis Capaldi performs first gig in two years after break for anxiety

The singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi performed on stage for the first time in two years after taking a break for his anxiety. The 28-year-old, who has Tourette's syndrome, last performed publicly at Glastonbury in 2023, during which his condition flared up. He announced on New Year's Eve the same year that he planned to take a hiatus to focus on his mental health. Capaldi performed six songs on Friday night, including the 2019 hit Someone You Loved, at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh to raise funds for suicide prevention. Fans were asked not to film any of the set, with their phones placed in sealed pouches throughout the performance, the BBC reported. Capaldi, from Bathgate, West Lothian, released his first album in 2019 and a second album in 2023. Tom Walker, the headline act, said the appearance was a last-minute decision from Capaldi, and fans were told to stay around for a secret act in addition to him and Nina Nesbitt. The BBC reported that Walker said: 'When Lewis confirmed he wanted to do it last-minute, I was delighted. We've bumped into each other a few times over the years backstage at fezzies (festivals) and events, and he's a total legend. 'I know how much pressure this industry can put on artists at times, especially after a bit of a break. 'So for him to be able to play a little secret gig in a safe space without all the phones, the noise and the expectations was perfect. 'I'm buzzing to have been a part of it.' The singer was raising funds in aid of the Campaign Against Living Miserably (Calm), a suicide-prevention charity. He has previously worked with Calm, playing a virtual acoustic concert in 2020 to support the charity. Speaking about the show, Simon Gunning, chief executive of the organisation, said: 'Calm started its life in music, having been set up by Factory Records' Tony Wilson. It's part of our DNA and a key tool in our fight against suicide. 'Music and musicians truly are a lifeline for so many people going through tough times, and it's apt that these three gigs are taking place in the lead-up to Mental Health Awareness Week. 'The theme this year is community, and there really is no greater community than music, and the collective experience of live music in particular – especially when we get a chance to switch off from our phones for a few hours. 'We're incredibly grateful to all the artists involved, including our ambassador Tom Walker.' On New Year's Eve 2020, Capaldi wrote on Instagram that he planned to 'make sure I'm 100 per cent before getting back out there properly'. He wrote: 'For now I'm going to continue taking some time to carry on looking after myself, maybe writing some music and taking a moment to reflect on some of the most incredible years of my life. 'I want to make absolutely sure I'm 100 per cent before getting back out there again properly for more shows and doing what I love more than anything!'
