Worried CapCut Might Get Banned With TikTok? Try These Video Editing Apps
While ByteDance is best known for its vertical video sensation TikTok, it also owns TikTok's sister app, CapCut. CapCut is a mobile-first video editing app and has 200 million active users as of 2023, according to Time. But while its connectivity to TikTok makes it great for creators, its similar parentage means that CapCut is included in the same potential ban in the US. We've been through this TikTok ban song and dance three times now, and we're running up to the June 19 deadline that marks the end of the second 75-day extension President Trump set for the Chinese-based company to find a US buyer approved by government officials. There's still a lot of uncertainty swirling around the apps' futures, which is why I began looking for potential replacements in case TikTok and CapCut eventually get banned. CapCut has a lot that makes it a favorite among creators -- it's versatile, has free and paid plans, and it's compatible with many social media platforms. But there are some good alternatives that offer similar features and user-friendly set-ups. I've spent some time with each of these programs and rounded up some of the best options below depending on your budget, skill level and operating system. Here are some alternative video-editing programs to use if CapCut gets banned. For more, check out some of our expert filming tips and favorite filming equipment. James Martin/CNET Instagram Edits For Instagram creators Instagram has just launched a free video editing app. It's called Edits, and it is, frankly, a CapCut copycat. It includes an in-app camera, along with a full suite of creative tools, including captions. You can share drafts of your videos with friends via DM and track your engagement, similar to Instagram insights. Based on my initial testing, Edits isn't as feature-packed as some of its competitors. But if you post frequently on Instagram, it's a decent option worth exploring. The app is now available on both iPhone and Android. See at Edits Apple Apple's Final Cut Pro For Apple users Apple's pro video editing program is exclusive to iPad and Mac users, but if that's you, Final Cut Pro is definitely an option worth considering. Final Cut Pro 11 was just updated in November 2024, and it came with a few new AI-enabled tools. Magnetic masking, now available, helps isolate specific objects for editing, and it now offers caption transcription and can handle spatial video editing. While it can easily handle basic video editing, it's designed as a more professional program. But for creators already adept in the basics from CapCut, Final Cut Pro offers a lot more advanced features that can help you level up your skills and content. The cheapest way to use Final Cut Pro is on an iPad for $5 per month (or $49 annually), and you can deactivate and reactivate your subscription as needed. If you're more comfortable editing on a Mac, you're going to have to cough up a one-time payment of $300, but it does include all future software updates. See at Apple Adobe Adobe Premiere Rush For budget-conscious creators If you've ever looked at Adobe Premiere Pro and immediately gotten overwhelmed by the number of panels and windows, Premiere Rush might be a good option for you. It's a kind of Premiere Pro Lite, with the added benefit of being free. You can use it on your phone through the mobile app or as a desktop app. Premiere Rush is designed for creating social videos, including an in-app camera for you to shoot with. Its editing capabilities are basic but inclusive, so it's likely everything you need. You can also easily record voiceovers as well as import audio. Overall, it's a solid option for people looking for video editing power without spending any money. See at Adobe For extra AI power CNET spoke with CEO and co-founder Sabba Keynejad last summer, who described the platform as one meant for "the-up-and-comer, the person just trying to get started." The AI startup's beginner-friendly features include subtitle generation, translation abilities, AI avatar and voice creation, and the typical video-editing tools. does offer a free plan, but its strict limits on many features might prod you to upgrade to the paid plan ($12-$29 per month depending on the plan), especially if you're editing a lot of content. Free videos are also automatically watermarked, so you'll need to upgrade to remove them. See at Veed Splice Splice For beginners and basic editing Splice is what I would call a very beginner-friendly program. It walks you through how to use the tools and doesn't overload you with features. With Splice, you can manually edit your clips or you can choose to let the app do the work for you and create an AI compilation. I created a couple of these AI compilations, which basically just combined all my clips into one timeline. I eventually found myself wanting to return to the manual editing tools for more hands-on control, but I appreciated that Splice offered the automatic option for folks who want to do less editing work. This app is great for people who just want the basic tools to trim and combine clips, along with a large stock music library you can access. If you want more advanced editing features, I would recommend Premiere Rush or Final Cut Pro. You get a 7-day free trial before you have to upgrade to the Pro version of Splice for $10 per week or $70 annually. See at Spliceapp These services are a great place for you to begin looking for mobile video editing apps, in case CapCut and TikTok get banned. For more, check out our list of TikTok alternatives.

Snapchat adds new features for creators, including an easier way to edit videos
As Snapchat continues to take on Instagram and TikTok, the company announced on Thursday that it's introducing a suite of new tools and features to make it easier for creators to create and share content on its platform. The social network is launching a 'Timeline Editor' feature, a new way to create videos from saved Memories, the ability to auto-save Stories to profiles, and more. Snapchat says the new Timeline Editor will give creators a more intuitive way to edit videos directly on the platform. The Timeline Editor lets you view your video in a chronological layout, so it's easy to trim, move, or rearrange clips. Once your sequence is set, you can add Lenses, add music from the Sounds library, and use other creative tools. The tool could get rid of the need for users to edit simple videos on third-party editing platforms, such as CapCut, before posting them on Snapchat. Creators will also get access to a new 'Create a Video' template that lets them select a few Memories, choose a song from Snapchat's Sounds library, and pick their favorite template to generate a custom compilation video. The feature is rolling out globally on iOS. Users will also soon be able to automatically save their public Stories directly to their profile to allow people to revisit the content. Snapchat says the feature enables creators to build a lasting collection of their best memories and keep their content alive. Of course, this feature sort of defeats the purpose of the ephemeral element behind Stories, but it could be useful for people who want to preserve their Stories. In addition, Snapchat is giving creators access to more insights into how their content is performing in order to allow them to better optimize their posts. Creators will be able to see the number of viewers who watched their public content for at least 12 days over the last month, giving them a better idea of how many returning viewers they have. They'll also be able to see which of their Spotlight posts and public Stories received the most views in the past 28 days, along with their total view time across all content. Plus, creators will get insight into their traffic sources, as they'll see views based on the source, which could include the Discover For You page, Following, Spotlight, Search, Chat, and Profile. Last, they'll see the average amount of time users spent watching their Spotlight posts, along with the average percent of their Spotlight posts that users finished watching.

Meta AI Unveils New Video Editing Tools with 50 Presets for U.S. Users
Meta is making a bold move into the world of AI-powered video editing. The tech giant has launched a new set of tools under its Meta AI platform that allows users to enhance short video clips with 50 predesigned prompts. These AI features let users tweak aspects like outfit designs, settings, and overall aesthetics—all with just a few taps. Currently available only to users in the United States, the editing options are accessible through the Meta AI app, the website, and a newly introduced standalone video-editing app called Edits. Positioned as a direct competitor to apps like CapCut and Google's generative AI features, Edits aims to simplify the video editing process for everyday users and creators alike. The video presets, which are limited to clips up to 10 seconds in length, offer a diverse range of effects—from giving your footage a vintage comic book appearance to altering a subject's outfit into a space-themed suit or adding moody rainy-day lighting. According to Meta, these presets were crafted based on feedback from creators, with a focus on making video editing intuitive and reflective of real creative demands. 'We built this so that everyone can experiment creatively and make fun, interesting videos to share with their friends, family, and followers,' the company said in a blog post. While Meta hasn't confirmed whether the tool uses its Movie Gen AI models directly, it did cite them as a source of inspiration for the new editing features. Once the edits are applied, users can immediately share their content on Facebook and Instagram, keeping engagement within Meta's ecosystem. Though limited in scope for now, Meta has indicated that more customisation options will be released later this year. These upcoming updates aim to empower users with more flexibility and creativity in how they produce content. With this rollout, Meta joins a growing list of tech companies pushing AI video tools into the mainstream, responding to the increasing demand for fast, accessible content creation solutions. By reducing the complexity of traditional video editing software, Meta hopes to attract a broader audience—from casual users to professional content creators. As short-form video continues to dominate social platforms, Meta's investment in AI-driven tools signals its ambition to stay ahead in the evolving digital content race.
