Bulldogs offer another player to rival clubs in wake of Lachie Galvin's signing
The future of another Bulldogs player looks set to lie away from Canterbury, as the club continues its mid-season shake-up in the wake of Lachie Galvin's signing. is reporting that the Dogs have offered former Warriors young gun Zyon Maiu'u to rival NRL clubs, just four months after signing him on a two-year deal. The 21-year-old prop - who debuted in the NRL with the Warriors last season - was signed with the Auckland-based side until the end of the 2026 season. But he was granted an early release after looking for more opportunities in first grade and the Bulldogs hailed the young middle forward's signing in February. "The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs are excited to announce the signing of boom youngster Zyon Maiu'u on a two-year deal, effective immediately," the club said at the time. But four months can be a long time in footy and Galvin's unexpected arrival after being released by the Tigers, has left the Dogs needing to offload players to navigate a tricky salary cap situation. Canterbury agreed to release Kurtis Morrin last week, with the versatile forward joining the Gold Coast Titans for the next two seasons, effective immediately. And it appears that Maiu'u is also surplus to requirements at coach Cameron Ciraldo's Bulldogs, with the club reportedly offering him up to rival clubs after giving the young prop limited opportunities to try and break into their first grade squad. RELATED: Roosters make call on DCE as pressure mounts for club to backflip Queensland Origin twist after ugly scenes for Walsh and Hammer Blow for Titans and Queensland after Origin hopeful ruled out Morrin's departure comes as the Dogs snapped up emerging Dragons forward Finau Latu in another mid-season boost for their premiership hopes. Latu had already signed a three-year deal to join Canterbury from next season, but the clubs agreed on a mid-season switch before the June 30 deadline. Dragons coach Shane Flanagan had already vented his frustrations in April about being unable to hang onto the forward. 'I wanted to keep him and I'm not happy about the negotiation side of it,' Flanagan said in April. 'It's been handled poorly, terribly... The way that it was handled by his management, was handled poorly, really poorly. We've brought that young bloke up the last three or four years and we wanted to keep him and never got an opportunity to.' Galvin's arrival from the Tigers has been the biggest mid-season move from the Bulldogs though, with the 19-year-old playmaker turning the ladder-leading Bulldogs into an even greater premiership threat in 2025. But it has also cast a cloud over the futures of off-contract Bulldogs halfback Toby Sexton and veteran hooker, Reed Mahoney. Sexton's form in particular has been instrumental to Canterbury's rise to the top of the ladder and he was excellent at No.7 alongside Galvin in their round 15 victory over Souths, before the Dogs enjoyed the bye in round 16. Galvin has already forced Sexton to shift into hooker earlier this season and it will be curious to see where Ciraldo plays the pair when first-choice No.6 Matt Burton returns for Thursday night's clash against the in-form Panthers. Mahoney has also seen his future at the Dogs called into question after Galvin's arrival and cut a frustrated figure in the sheds after being taken off in the second half of the teenage recruit's first game for the club. He was also replaced late in the victory against Souths, only to come back on minutes later with the game on the line. Mahoney is contracted with the Dogs until the end of next season but with his future unclear and an extension yet to be tabled, he'll be free to speak to rival clubs from November 1 unless a deal is done before then.

NRL great questions Galvin call as new footage exposes teammate's anger
Premiership-winning half Braith Anasta said he would be 'filthy' had he been in Bulldogs No. 7 Toby Sexton's shoes on Monday night. Sexton made the stunning admission that he thought teen debutant Lachlan Galvin was joking when he came on in the 57th minute and told the top-of-the-table halfback to go play hooker. 'He came on and said play hooker and I thought he was joking for a second and he goes 'Nah you're actually playing hooker' and I thought oh righto this will be good,' Sexton said. They were orders from coach Cameron Ciraldo who dragged on-the-nose No. 9 Reed Mahoney in the same interchange. 'Reed Mahoney wasn't happy at all about being taken off, it was visible, and then Sexton's post-match interview with us, he didn't even know he was going to move to No. 9 and the new kid on the block told him to go there,' Anasta said. 'Honestly, I'd be filthy. 'I love watching them win and I loved watching them play yesterday and I thought they were great and I think they can improve with Galvin. But if we're going to be honest, if I'm Sexton and we're coming first, I'm the chief playmaker, we're winning the game then the new kid on the block comes out and says you go to nine, I'm playing seven, you are filthy.' Galvin scored on debut and footage showed Mahoney by himself and visibly upset in the dressing rooms following the 30-12 win over the Eels. 'Even the vision of the entire Canterbury team jumping over Lachie when he scored that try and the emotion of Cameron Ciraldo in the coaching box getting up out of his chair,' Paul Crawley said. 'They're playing Parramatta sitting second last on the ladder and the coach has got so much riding on it. 'Then you see the vision of Reed Mahoney in the dressing room, after a comprehensive win, kicking stones. You can't hide what the real feeling was there.' broke the story last month that the Bulldogs had allowed Mahoney to start talking to rival clubs, just days after meeting with Galvin. 'There was always going to be fall guys, or a fall guy, in this,' Anasta said. 'We know that and Canterbury know that too and unfortunately it's looking like it's going to be Reed Mahoney and a positional switch for Sexton.'

Canterbury Bulldogs fans are accused of blocking traffic and harassing motorists in wild video before cops put a stop to celebrations
Jubilant Bulldogs NRL fans who were caught in wild celebrations on social media have been accused of blocking traffic and harassing motorists as they partied after their win over arch-rivals Parramatta on Monday night. Coach Cameron Ciraldo's men continue to be the yardstick of the competition after 14 rounds - and their loyal supporters were in the mood to celebrate after they outclassed the Eels 30-12 at Accor Stadium. The fans are seen packing onto the street at Belmore in Sydney 's south-west in vision uploaded to TikTok and X. A motorbike and then a ute can be seen struggling to move through the sea of fans, the majority decked out in Canterbury's iconic blue and white colours. Daily Mail Australia understands the footage was taken from Burwood Rd in Belmore just before 7pm on Monday. A page on X known as NRL Silverback posted: 'Bulldogs fans are currently blocking traffic, harassing and assaulting motorists trying to drive through the streets. 'All this for beating the team in 2nd last?' It provoked an animated response on social media, with Bulldogs fans feeling the words were provocative. 'They are celebrating a win, nothing wrong with that. You can only beat who the NRL have you to play every week,' said one. A second asked: 'Where's the riot police? A third weighed in with: 'Loving the hate from (other) jealous supporters.' In a statement, NSW Police confirmed to Daily Mail Australia they were at the scene. 'Police were in attendance for crowd control but no issues occurred, there was no damage to property and zero assaults,' the statement read. At Accor Stadium, Lachlan Galvin made his long awaited debut for the Bulldogs, and the teenager became an instant cult hero after scoring a second half try. Galvin warmed the bench for nearly an hour, but once he was thrown into the fray he showed why he is likely to play in the halves for the remainder of 2025. 'When we looked at bringing him in immediately we probably thought he could fill a number of positions and he might be able to do that,' Ciraldo said post game. 'But he is predominantly a half and I thought he did a great job. 'The learning is not over, he has been here a week. He still has a lot to learn. 'But this has been a great start for him, we're really proud of him and he has fitted in great.'

Bulldogs playmaker thought Galvin was ‘joking' when told he was being punted
Bulldogs halfback Toby Sexton has revealed he thought new recruit Lachlan Galvin was joking when he came on for his debut on Sunday and told the No. 7 to go play hooker. Nobody knew just how Galvin would be used off the bench in his first game for Canterbury, including the players themselves. The 19-year-old warmed the bench for 57 minutes thinking he was likely coming on at lock or centre, but when the moment arrived it was in the halves - his preferred position. Limited-time offer > Galvin came on and Sexton, who admits he has 'no idea' the long-term plan for positions, was told to move into dummyhalf with Reed Mahoney going off. 'He came on and said play hooker and I thought he was joking for a second and he goes 'Nah you're actually playing hooker' and I thought oh righto this will be good,' Sexton said on Fox League. 'Whatever is my role in the team, the coach is going to decide that and I just have to play to the best of my ability. We've got lots of strike in the team and they're good headaches for the coach to have. Galvin said he still has 'no clue' what position he'll be playing moving forward under coach Cameron Ciraldo. 'I thought I was coming on at lock or centre, I didn't know and then Ciro told me go into the halves so whatever Ciro wants and the boys need, I'll do it,' Galvin said on Fox League. 'If we keep winning like that I'll do anything.' Ciraldo said he had a number of possible plans to get Galvin into the game, but halfback wasn't the number one idea. He also revealed that his original intention last week was to have Galvin play in NSW Cup, rather than the King's Birthday blockbuster. 'We had a couple of plans, but no, that wasn't the plan (to play halfback). We had a couple of different plans there,' Ciraldo said. 'It's been a really hard week to get his head around everything. 'On Tuesday, when I named the team, he wasn't in the team. I thought he would play NSW Cup and he'll just come through there and learn our systems but every training session he did, he got better. He understood our systems better and by the end of the week, it was clear that we needed to have him in the team and he could help us win the game. 'Credit to him and how he went about his training during the week and I thought he did great when he got on there. Ciraldo was assured that the 19-year-old's best position was in the halves. 'He plays in the halves. That's his preferred position,' Ciraldo said. 'When we looked at bringing him in immediately we probably thought he can fill a number of positions, and he might be able to do that, but he's predominantly a half and he did a great job tonight. 'The learning is not over. He's been here for a week. He's still got a lot to learn, but today it was a great start for him.' Sexton is still without a contract for next season and admitted the uncertainty around his future, which was only amplified with the arrival of Galvin, has played on his mind at times this season. 'Yeah it obviously has its moments but I have a great playing group and staff here and coming to training every day is so enjoyable and it's pretty cliche but I'm just trying to control what I can control,' Sexton said. 'Hopefully that (contract) will get sorted sooner rather than later but it was another good win tonight. 'It's obviously been a few weird weeks with Lachie coming to the club but I thought the moment he came in, all the pressure went away and I could just focus on footy. 'At the end of the day he's a great kid and from day dot he just wants to learn and get better and he's very young. He's fit in really well and I don't feel the pressure, I just need to play footy and if I do that well the rest is out of my control.' Galvin said he had moved on from the drama surrounding his departure from the Tigers and paid tribute to his new teammates and fans. 'I just want to play footy. I shut that out. That's all over now and that's all in the past,' he said. 'That's all in the past now. I just want to play footy and I was smiling and enjoying it out there today. That's all I really want to do and with these bunch of boys, it's quite amazing and the fans got right behind us tonight. It was really cool. 'As you can see when I scored, they all jumped over me. They've been so supportive, they've got behind me. 'Just to get the win with all these boys that have been so good to me, I love every minute of it. The club is building into something really special here and I love being a part of it.' Bulldogs No. 6 Matt Burton played in the halves alongside both Sexton and Galvin on Sunday and said the dynamic worked with all three of them on the field. 'I thought it was good, (Galvin) came on and added a lot of energy there through the middle and took them on,' Burton said. 'He'll only get better as he gets older and I thought he was great on debut tonight and jagged a try but I thought Sexton was really good in the middle as well. 'We didn't train too much (Galvin) to be honest, he sort of filled in a few spots during the week but we didn't know where he was going to come on. 'I thought he did a great job to handle that and has obviously been through a bit, he's done well tonight. There's been a lot of noise around him so it's good for him to come out here, have some fun and play footy. '(But) Sexton) has been outstanding for us all year and the way he goes about his business is second to none and I thought he played really well in the first half, got us in a good position and set us up for the second half.' Canterbury captain Stephen Crichton added: 'There's a long way to go with him, tonight was just a little snippet of how good he can be, I'm very proud he's in the Bulldogs colours now, he's going to be a massive asset to our team.'

Lachlan Galvin leaves new Bulldogs' team-mate baffled with odd team instruction as the ex-Tigers star ends month of headlines with try in Canterbury's win vs Parramatta
Lachlan Galvin left one of his new Bulldogs team-mates bemused after issuing a odd team instruction when the former Wests Tigers five-eighth came off the bench for his debut for Canterbury on Monday. The 19-year-old prodigy ended months of speculation over his future and announced his arrival at the Bulldogs, by scoring a try and taking the reins as halfback, to help seal a 30-12 win against Parramatta. The result keeps the Dogs at the top of the NRL but some uncertainty still remains over what role the exciting young playmaker will have in Cameron Ciraldo's side. The ex-Tigers star warmed the bench for 56 minutes before coming on to take over at half-back, as off-contract No 7 Toby Sexton was moved to play hooker. But the move left Sexton slightly puzzled, admitting to Fox League after the match that he thought Galvin had been joking when he told him he was set to join up with the forwards for the final quarter of the match. 'He came on and said play hooker and I thought he was joking for a second and he goes: "Nah you're actually playing hooker" and I thought: "Oh, righto this will be good",' Sexton told the outlet. Bulldogs No 7 Toby Sexton (left) said he thought Galvin was joking when he told him to move to play hooker as the ex-Tigers star stepped into his role in the halves 'Whatever is my role in the team, the coach is going to decide that and I just have to play to the best of my ability. 'We've got lots of strike in the team and they're good headaches for the coach to have.' Galvin, meanwhile, still is unsure of his own role in Ciraldo's backline, adding: 'I thought I was coming on at lock or centre, I didn't know and then Ciro told me to go into the halves so whatever Ciro wants and the boys need, I'll do it. 'If we keep winning like that I'll do anything.' At the start of the month, Galvin broke his silence to set the record straight on his controversial Tigers exit. He set the record straight on his relationship with Benji Marshall and Jarome Luai, claiming there was no bad blood with them, adding that he was excited to work under Ciraldo. And on Monday he was again pressed on the move, claiming that he was still trying to ignore the negative furore around the move. The club is building into something really special here and I love being a part of it.' Galvin did just that, involving himself heavily in Canterbury's attack and linking with five-eighth Matt Burton in the lead-up to a Viliame Kikau try to put the Bulldogs up 18-12. And, after Harry Hayes crossed to make it 24-12, Galvin capped his arrival in the No.23 jersey by scoring his first try in Bulldogs colours to seal the match. After putting fullback Connor Tracey into space on the right edge, Galvin backed up on the play and ran onto a Josh Curran pass to score after a Jacob Kiraz offload. Galvin had been one of the most divisive figures in rugby league for the past two months, such was the nature of his highly-publicised exit from Wests Tigers. But there was nothing but love from Bulldogs fans, with a crowd of 59,878 in Accor Stadium on Monday. The 19-year-old's name was chanted before he even entered the field and he earned a standing ovation as he ran on and again with each of his first touches. And the roar was enormous when he crossed late in the match, 10 days after officially putting pen to paper on a three-and-a-half year deal with the Bulldogs. In fact, it was a surprise to see Galvin on the matchday squad, after it had been thought the young footy star could play a warm-up match in the NSW Cup last week, as opposed to stepping out onto Stadium Australia for Monday night's King's Birthday clash. 'We had a couple of plans, but no, that wasn't the plan (to play halfback). We had a couple of different plans there,' Ciraldo said. 'It's been a really hard week to get his head around everything. 'On Tuesday, when I named the team, he wasn't in the team. 'I thought he would play NSW Cup and he'll just come through there and learn our systems but every training session he did, he got better. He understood our systems better and by the end of the week, it was clear that we needed to have him in the team and he could help us win the game. 'Credit to him and how he went about his training during the week and I thought he did great when he got on there.' Notable too was how impressive Sexton's kicking game was for Canterbury before Galvin came on. The Bulldogs' regular halfback also entered Monday under intense scrutiny, given he is off-contract and seemingly unlikely to now be re-signed. Canterbury were able to dominate field position for the majority of the match, only for Parramatta's resolute defence to keep them in the contest. Burton scored early for the Bulldogs when he picked off a Ryley Smith pass from a scrum and went 60 metres to score. But the Eels returned the favour moments later when Zac Lomax intercepted a Burton pass and put Mitch Moses into space to score a 90-metre try. The Bulldogs took a 12-6 lead back when Burton went to the short side in the 20th minute and sent Marcelo Montoya over. However, the match swung again when Viliame Kikau was sin-binned for dangerous contact on a kicking Moses just before halftime and the Eels levelled the score on the next set. Canterbury went 14-12 clear when Moses was penalised for a high shot in the 50th minute before the Bulldogs ran away with it late with Galvin in the centres.
