Willie Mullins' Ascot entries as he seeks redemption after luckless Tuesday

Willie Mullins has booked Ryan Moore for two leading handicap fancies at Royal Ascot this week. Mullins was out of luck on Tuesday when he saddled two runners in the Ascot Stakes and a single runner in the Copper Horse Stakes. Moore was legged up on the 11/4 favourite Reaching High in the former race, but he could only finish ninth of the 20 runners, while Mullins' other runners were also unplaced. Reaching High has a provisional entry to run again this week in the Queen Alexandra Stakes on Saturday. But top jockey Moore has already been booked to ride another of Mullins' horses in the same race in Sober, who is currently a warm favourite for the £110,000 handicap. Sober was bought for €115,000 at an Arqana Sale in October 2024, having raced on the flat for Andre Fabre. The Camelot gelding made his debut for Mullins when winning a hurdle race at Killarney last month. Now he is being sent to Berkshire in the hopes of landing a big pot on the flat. Mullins and Moore will also team up with classy hurler Ethical Diamond, who runs in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes on Friday. Ethical Diamond was last seen finishing seventh in the Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle and looks to have a workable mark now back on the flat. In total Mullins has seven entries at Royal Ascot in the coming days as he looks to add to the ten winners he has already enjoyed at the famous meeting.

Royal Ascot 2025 Day Two: Los Angeles to win the Prince Of Wales's Stakes

LOS ANGELES can win the Prince Of Wales's Stakes (4.20pm) on the second day of Royal Ascot 2025. Aidan O'Brien's four-year-old can make it three wins from three starts this season with another victory in the Group One feature on the second day of the Royal meeting in Berkshire. The son of the Ballydoyle stable's 2012 2,000 Guineas and Derby hero Camelot, like his sire, won the Irish Derby last June having been third to star stable-mate City Of Troy at Epsom earlier in the month. Advertisement Having also won the Group Two Great Voltigeur Stakes at York in August he ran some fine races in defeat, finishing fourth to Economics in the Irish Champion Stakes and third in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at ParisLongchamp. READ MORE: Royal Ascot 2025: Docklands starts with bang to win Queen Anne Stakes READ MORE: Royal Ascot 2025: Field Of Gold sparkles in the St James's Palace Stakes Los Angeles returned to action with victory over White Birch in the Group Two Mooresbridge Stakes at the Curragh over 1m2f at the start of last month and held off Anmaat – who is set to line up in opposition again – to win the Group One Tattersalls Stakes at the same Irish track three weeks ago. He didn't have much in hand against the reopposing rival but his willing attitude, battling qualities and quality saw him come on top. Advertisement Owen Burrows' now seven-year-old Anmaat – who won over course and distance in the Champion Stakes last October – is sure to come on for his seasonal return but he has done most of his best work on ground with some juice in it, which he is unlikely to get at Ascot. Los Angeles has won on a variety of going and the tough four-year-old can do so again with the supplemented Andrew Balding filly See The Fire – impressive at York last month – in with a good each-way shout. Liverpool FC fan and trainer Karl Burke has won the Group Two Queen Mary Stakes (Fillies) (2.30pm) twice in the last three years and he may score again with ZELAINA. Yorkshire trainer Burke won with Dramatised in 2022 and then again with Leovanni – who carried the same Wathan Racing colours as Zelaina will sport – 12 months ago. The daughter of Mehmas made a taking debut when scoring by two-and-three-quarters-of-a-length from Godolphin's Secret Oath at Nottingham at the start of the month. Burke holds her in high regard and she can give him another victory ahead of chiefly Aidan O'Brien's True Love and the Ralph Beckett-trained course and distance winner Society Kiss. SHACKLETON can give Ballydoyle maestro O'Brien a record ninth victory in the Group Two Queen's Vase (3.05pm). The three-year-old son of the stable's 2012 Derby hero Camelot was fourth in the Group Three Gallinule Stakes on his seasonal return over 1m2f. He ran with promise that day and the step up in trip can bring out more improvement and see Shackleton land a second career success on just his sixth start. Stable-mate Scandinavia looks the chief danger and may bring up a one-two for O'Brien. Irish raider ONE LOOK can take the Group Two Duke Of Cambridge Stakes (3.40pm). Paddy Twomey's four-year-old daughter of Gleneagles is an upwardly mobile filly who can land a first success at Group Two level. She won a Listed mile contest at Killarney last August and was second to Je Zous in a Group Three Fillies Stakes at Gowran Park the following month. Advertisement This season she has continued that progress, scoring in a Group Three contest at the Curragh in April before getting within a half-a-length of the smart Group One performer Porta Fortuna in the Group Two Lanwades Stud Stakes back at the Irish track last month. That is top-class form and One Look can get the better of chiefly Godolphin's Cinderella's Dream and the John and Thady Gosden-trained Running Lion, who won this race last year. URBAN LION could well outrun his biggish odds to win the Royal Hunt Cup (Heritage Handicap) (5pm). Jack Channon's four-year-old is in fine form and has progressed with each run this season. He won on the all-weather at Chelmsford City in February and was second to Hunt Cup rival Ebt's Guard at Newbury in April before getting his head back in front at Sandown on Saturday. He won well over the mile there, staying on strongly to beat Classic by two lengths. Urban Lion is quickly turned out under a 5lb penalty and from what looks a decent draw in stall three, can double up. The aforementioned Ebt's Guard – trained by Willie Muir and Chris Grassick; Roger Varian's hat-trick-seeking My Cloud; and the Andrew Balding-trained Fox Legacy are others who can go well in the always-competitive mile handicap. Ed Walker's ROSE PRICK has a good each-way chance in the Kensington Palace Stakes (Fillies' Handicap) (5.35pm). While in the finale on day two, the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes (6.10pm) OLD IS GOLD, from the Balding stable, can add to his victory in Beverley's Two Year Old Trophy last month. Wright Ones ROYAL ASCOT (Day Two) 2.30pm Zelania 3.05pm Shackleton 3.40pm Rainbow's Edge 4.20pm Los Angeles 5pm Urban Lion (NAP) 5.35pm Rose Prick 6.10pm Old Is Gold

Royal Ascot: Los Angeles out to confirm class for Aidan O'Brien in showdown with old foe Anmaat

Aidan O'Brien's top older horse, Los Angeles, goes into Wednesday's Prince of Wales's Stakes facing his own Royal Ascot fashion challenge. The son of Camelot is a Classic winner and an unbeaten Group One winning two-year-old. This season, he has already secured more Group One glory. It is this contest, however, that shapes as potentially even more career-defining for the wonderfully imposing Los Angeles in terms of commercial bloodstock fashion. His Classic victory was in last year's Irish Derby at 1½ miles. His top-flight juvenile victory was in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud at 1¼ miles in a bog. Los Angeles was also third in last year's Arc. It is a profile that makes for a hard sell in the stallion business. READ MORE Even last month's Tattersalls Gold Cup victory at the Curragh came with question marks. Los Angeles looked, to some, like a race-fit grinder that outstayed the English gelding Anmaat. But 1¼ miles on quick ground at Royal Ascot is a chance for an admirable top-class horse to prove his credentials as one of the best and most valuable talents in Europe. Anmaat takes him on again, aiming to bridge the half-length gap from the Curragh, while the unknown factor is the filly See The Fire, supplemented after a deeply impressive rout at York last time. France's Map Of Stars is another good horse likely to be in Los Angeles's slipstream and hoping to quicken past up the short Ascot straight. Managing that is easier said than done. Los Angeles stays but he's also got quality and attitude. Anmaat looked to briefly head him in the Tattersalls and his rival reacted as if insulted. There was just half a length in it, but it ultimately looked a commanding margin. 'He's a big four-year-old colt and he knows how big he is – he'd be very happy to walk over you rather than walk around you,' O'Brien joked earlier this year. 'No horse likes a fight better than him.' Even after huge success in this season's Classics to date, O'Brien has indicated that future top middle-distance deployments this season may revolve around Los Angeles. The King George and then another tilt at the Arc have been on his agenda since the start of the season. But in the here and now, a 10-furlong Royal Ascot success may prove just as crucial to the colt's long-term value. A major obstacle to all the Irish hopes, however, may prove to be the French runner Asmarani If Wednesday's action starts with a trio of Group Two prizes, there is no shortage of Group One performers in them. A pair of Classic winners line up for the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes and neither is likely to start favourite. Last year's Newmarket 1,000 Guineas winner, Elmalka, was well behind Cinderella's Dream at Newmarket last month and the latter tops betting lists for Godolphin. Fallen Angel won last year's Irish 1,000 Guineas, after which she was a big-money purchase by the Wathnan ownership. She has failed to win in three starts since and hung on her first start of this term when sixth in the Lockinge. Not surprisingly, she sports first-time cheekpieces now. Paddy Twomey runs One Look in the Duke Of Cambridge and the Co Tipperary-based trainer could enjoy a memorable day. [ Colin Keane appointed as Juddmonte's number one jockey in Europe Opens in new window ] He runs Rogue Legend in the concluding Windsor Castle Stakes and the Cork and Tipperary winner should be one of the leading contenders. The Ballydoyle team run Kansas, who has been behind stable companions on his three starts to date while Nuevo Slovo goes for Curragh-based John O'Donoghue. It looks a typically competitive 24-runner heat and betting value may be had by siding with Utmost Respect. Richard Fahey's runner enjoyed no luck at all on his York debut a month ago when eventually finishing runner-up. Twomey runs the unbeaten Carmers in the Queen's Vase where Ryan Moore has picked Shackleton over Scandinavia. Carmers made rapid progress from breaking his maiden at Ballinrobe last month to landing the Yeats Stakes at Navan just over a week later. O'Brien has won the Vase on eight occasions including a year ago with Thursday's big Gold Cup hope Illinois. A major obstacle to all the Irish hopes, however, may prove to be the French runner Asmarani now that he faces easily the fastest surface he's tackled to date. True Love is among three Irish hopefuls for the opening Queen Mary where Karl Burke's Zelaina boasts a big reputation that could see her start at a very short price. Course-and-distance winner Society Kiss looks a value alternative.
