1,800 students affected by classroom shortage in Naic, Cavite
There are about 1,800 students in Cavite but there are only two standard classrooms available for them. There are six make-shift rooms in nearby vacant housing units but the the quality of education may suffer with the set up in Calubcob Elementary School, according to the report of Mark Salazar on "24 Oras."
Students from different classes only have a blackboard as a divider while 64 Grade Four students occupy a make-shift classroom.
The vacant housing units in Barangay Calubcob, which are used as classrooms, are only 30 square meters wide. There are about 45 to 50 students crowded together in the unit. There are also not enough armchairs.
A school building is under construction in a nearby lot but there are no details provided by the project board of the Department of Public Works and Highways as to the date of completion. Some teachers said the construction started in 2023.
The teachers have to make sacrifices that may affect the quality of their lessons.
One teacher said that school work is limited with the lack of a laboratory and ICT room that students can use.
Another teacher said physical activities are limited because there is no space for much movement.
There is a lack of teachers in Calubcob, the Grade 6 class is composed of 65 students in one room but they are on standby because there is still no teacher for MAPE or Music, Arts, and Physical Education.
The situation in Calubcon Elementary School, Salazar reports, is a reflection of other classrooms in different parts of the country.
