Residents react to 4.8 earthquake in Caliente, Nevada

CALIENTE, Nevada () — A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit the area of Caliente, Nevada around 1 a.m. Friday morning. It was a light earthquake 25 miles south southwest of Caliente according to reports, but residents were still able to feel it. 'I was in the kitchen cooking cookies for our yard sale this weekend, all of a sudden there was a rumbling!' one resident told The earthquake had a depth of three miles, and it could be felt for almost 60 miles. 'We're so used to the trains coming in and out, that that's not– It's almost, I'd say, soothing for somebody that was born here, but that was definitely not like that. You could feel it shake the house,' another resident said. She also said that she has a dog that gets scared by thunderstorms and other loud noises, so she was waiting for it to stop. 'We have a lot of sonic booms, you know, a lot of, I guess, Nellis Air Force activity, so they do a lot of training and stuff, so I thought it was something like that, but it just went a lot longer,' she continued. Joseph DeGolyer contributed to the reporting of this story. BREAKING NEWS Nevada rocked by earthquake swarm with the strongest reaching nearly 5 magnitude

Nevada has experienced an uptick in seismic activity over the last 24 hours. The US Geological Survey (USGS) detected seven earthquakes, with the largest measuring a 4.8 magnitude, that hit at 7:16am ET near Caliente. The other tremors, starting Thursday and continuing into Friday, ranged from 1.1 magnitude to 3.3 magnitude. The 4.8 magnitude is the latest earthquake to hit, with shaking detected as far south as Las Vegas, which sits more than 150 miles south. It was likely caused by tectonic activity along one of the many fault systems in the Basin and Range Province, a region known for stretching and thinning of the Earth's crust. The USGS detect a 3.3 magnitude earthquake Thursday about 14 miles northeast of Nellis Air Force Base. This was followed by two smaller tremors just minutes later. Nellis Air Force Base tested US nuclear weapons above ground during the 1950s and 1960s, but testing moved underground until all operations ceased in 1992. Nevada is the nation's third-most seismically active state, ranking behind only California and Alaska. This is a developing story... More updates to come

A Brand-New A16 Drops in Napa

Another A16 restaurant from Shelley Lindgren and partner Kitty Oestlien is on the precipice of opening: A16 Napa debuts on Thursday, May 29, at 821 Coombs Street, spreading out in a 4,000-square-foot space in downtown Napa, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. This new location joins the original Marina restaurant, along with Rockridge and a Ferry Building outpost. The new spot shares many of the Italian dishes and pizzas that have kept the restaurant going for 20 years, but the Chronicle teased a couple of new dishes, including pancetta-wrapped pork rolls and hearth-cooked octopus. The wine list skews toward Italian bottles, but will also feature California-made, Italian-inspired wines. For those looking for a lunchtime bite, A16 Napa is also expected to add lunch service in the coming weeks. Dave McLean is back with a new brewery Dave McLean, the popular brewer behind the original Magnolia Brewing, is fully back on the local beer scene with his new company, Hidden Splendor Beer, the San Francisco Standard reports. McLean has consulted for other breweries since selling Magnolia in 2017, but now beer aficionados will be able to sip on his own brand's pilsners and lagers as soon as this summer, which will be released to local bars and restaurants. Also in the works: a San Rafael restaurant and pub from McLean, set to open this fall. Crowdfunding starts for new women's sports bar in Marin Isabella Woods and Soledad Jean-Pierre of Marin are set on opening a new women's sports bar in Marin County, and they're hoping the Bay Area will back them, the Mercury News reports. Dubbed The Twelfth, the duo launched crowdfunding efforts on Friday, May 23, aimed at raising $425,000 for their new bar. No location is set quite yet, but Woods and Jean-Pierre are currently searching for a home for their bar. Run away to Tahoe and open a new restaurant If you happen to have a cool $4.9 million and change rattling around in your bank account, SFGATE reports that Kings Beach restaurant Caliente is up for sale. Caliente closed up after 18 years in October 2024, and the restaurant (with a fun second-floor outdoor deck) is now for sale. What does this have to do with the Bay Area? Not much, just let Eater SF live vicariously through this idea that a local might snap up this deal, and let us know if you do wind up picking up the space for a restaurant. I Want My Funeral To Be Fun

An unfortunate fact about my life: I have spent a lot of time planning funerals. I was 21 when my mom died of stage four colon cancer. She requested a traditional Methodist service where Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam's songs were to be played. Both of my American grandparents wanted smaller to-dos in a chapel connected to the funeral home and asked for open caskets (something I still think about to this day). And then there was my dad, who died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) last year; he had a remarkable-for-the-disease four years to meticulously plan his funeral. The memorandum was full of staunch requests (my fiancé was to read this exact passage from the Bible by memory, there would be a slideshow of approved photos at the country club reception), which made the planning almost too easy for somebody who was larger than life. These experiences helped me learn something important about myself: I want people to have fun at my funeral. After all, the word does have 'fun' in it. Wear an outfit you think I'd like, but please remember I hate high-low dresses, skinny jeans, and khaki pants—the inspiration is Naomi Campbell at Andre Leon Talley's funeral. A movie theater-sized slideshow should be only hot photos of me—if I've ever texted you a tasteful nude, go ahead and throw it in there to remind everybody how good I looked. Let's hire Caffè Panna to hand out ice cream cones while a champagne tower overflows (each glass finished off with a crunched-up antidepressant adorning the rim). Maybe Sephora can do beauty touch-ups on-site, giving everybody a dab of Victoria Beckham lip gloss and a pop of Westman Atelier blush? Book the venue for the entire night, even though we all know if I was there, I would have snuck out at 9:15 p.m. sharp to be home with my cat. But I want my funeral to be a capital P party. Last month, transgender Filipino-American drag performer Bianca Castro-Arabejo (also known as Jiggly Caliente) passed away. Instead of a traditional funeral, 'Slaybill' (a play on Broadway Playbill) was hosted in her honor. The event took the idea of a celebration of life to heart—guests wore pastel colors and the run of show included eulogy-turned-comedy acts all about Caliente, as well as roasts that walked the line between dark humor and just plain dark. Fellow drag queen Karl Westerberg, known as Manila Luzon, embodied it all in his laughing-and-crying-at-the-same-time eulogy. When recalling filming Caliente's Drag Race tryout video in an Apple store, he said 'it was giving a glamorous Augustus Gloop going up the chocolate tube in Willy Wonka,' but also 'I'm so sad we can't keep doing and dreaming bigger and bigger things together.'
