Hubert Davis reveal what UNC basketball's offseason focus is
The North Carolina Tar Heels are quietly having one of the top offseason in college basketball – and it all ties back to head coach Hubert Davis. After UNC largely struck out in the 2024 offseason transfer portal, Hubert made sure to effectively re-stack his roster for the 2025-2026 campaign. North Carolina landed Top-10 Class of 2025 recruit Caleb Wilson, plus six transfer portal commitments, including 7-foot center Henri Veesaar. Advertisement Hubert's busy, successful offseason continues this week out West in Colorado Springs, with him serving as a court coach at USA Basketball's U19 National Team Training Camp. Alongside the likes of colleagues and fellow Power 4 coaches Damon Stoudamire (Georgia Tech), Mark Pope (Kentucky) and Nate Oats (Alabama), Hubert is coaching some of the nation's top Class of 2025 and 2026 recruits. While at camp, Hubert caught up with InsideCarolina, speaking about the Tar Heels' active offseason and his golden opportunity to help coach Team USA. "Offseason is the offseason, but summer school, individual workouts, team practices, and spending a ton of time with the players," Hubert said about UNC's first offseason under general manager Jim Tanner. "Getting on the court with them, individual workouts like I talked about. Skill development is huge for us, and we want each one of our players to continue to get better and better. I mean, that's the fun part. That's all we've been doing all summer. Advertisement "Any time you're able to serve your country in this capacity and serve this national team – is something that you would never want to pass up," Hubert continued. "I played USA Basketball when I was in college, and having an opportunity to do so as a coach, as one of the coaches, was something that I was really excited about." According to the official USA Basketball website, U19 roster finalists include a trio of North Carolina targets: Caleb Holt, Deron Rippey Jr. and Tyran Stokes – all of whom sport offers. With Hubert in attendance this week, hopefully the Tar Heels can land a few commitments. BYU, which is coming off a Sweet 16 appearance in March, should be one of the top teams across college basketball this coming season. The Cougars fared well in the transfer portal themselves, but their top roster highlight will be AJ Dybantsa. Ranked the Class of 2025's top recruit, Dybantsa chose BYU over UNC during his recruiting cycle. A Baton Rouge district judge has officially set the bond conditions for Caleb McCray, a key suspect in the hazing death of Southern University student Caleb Wilson. McCray faces the most severe charges in the case, including criminal hazing and manslaughter. During the bond hearing in March, the court set McCray's bond at $75,000 for the manslaughter charge and $25,000 for criminal hazing. Manslaughter, the most serious charge, carries a potential sentence of up to 40 years in prison if McCray is convicted. The judge also imposed specific conditions on McCray's bond. He is required to use a phone tracker instead of the traditional ankle monitor. Additionally, McCray is ordered to have no contact with any co-defendants involved in the case. Two other individuals, Kyle Thurman and Isaiah Smith, are also facing charges related to the incident but were charged with misdemeanor hazing, a lesser offense compared to the charges against McCray. In February, Southern University student Caleb Wilson collapsed and died in an off-campus fraternity ritual for membership in the Omega Psi Phi fraternity chapter on Southern's campus. Information gathered after Wilson's death in late February revealed that members of Omega Psi Phi at Southern University misled police about where Wilson's death occurred during the ritual. Initially, they claimed Wilson and other pledges were at a park when the incident happened. However, sources now reveal the pledges were actually in a warehouse in Baton Rouge at the time. According to a March report by WBRZ, based on information from a source, an unsanctioned event required pledges to stand in a single-file line. Each pledge was punched with a boxing glove before running to the back of the line, repeating the process for everyone. After being punched, Wilson ran to the back of the line but collapsed and began having seizures. The pledges reportedly did not have access to their phones, and it's unclear if those overseeing the ritual had theirs. No 911 call was made. According to WBRZ's source, 15 minutes passed before Wilson was placed in a car and taken to Baton Rouge General, where he was pronounced dead. In early March, McCray was charged with criminal hazing and manslaughter. His bond is set at $75,000 for the manslaughter charge and $25,000 for the hazing charge.

UNC basketball to host five-star recruit A big five star recruit will visit UNC at the end of the Summer. The North Carolina Tar Heels will welcome in a top 10 recruiting class in 2025 headlined by five-star forward Caleb Wilson. But Hubert Davis and his staff are going to need to land another big class in 2026 and they are after some premier talent. One of UNC's top targets in the 2026 class is five-star power forward Toni Bryant, a Florida prospect who picked up an offer from the Tar Heels earlier in 2025. Since then, UNC has made him a priority, even watching him recently on the AAU circuit. And now, UNC will have the chance to impress him in person. Per Joe Tipton of On3, the Tar Heels will host Bryant for an official visit on September 1st: It's the first official visit for a 2026 prospect known for UNC and it's an important one. The 6-foot-9, 215-pound Bryant has 22 offers from programs and is drawing a lot of interest from programs including UNC, Duke, Kentucky, Missouri, and Kansas among others. Bryant is ranked No. 10 nationally, No. 3 power forward and the No. 1 player in the state of Florida per the 247Sports recruiting rankings.
