Mazda Voluntarily Recalls 171,000 Vehicles Due to Possible Airbag Fault

Mazda has recalled 171,412 of its new 2024-2025 Mazda 3 and CX-30 models over a fault that can disable the airbags. Mazda has initiated a safety recall for 171,412 of its late-model vehicles due to a software issue that could disable the airbags. The recall impacts 2024 and 2025 model-year Mazda 3 and CX-30 vehicles. Mazda has stated it is not aware of any accidents or injuries resulting from this issue. Source: Kyle Edward 0:07 / 0:09 Thinking about buying a Toyota RAV4? These 5 rivals might change your mind Watch More The recall includes 119,555 CX-30 crossovers and 51,857 Mazda 3 sedans and hatchbacks. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the defect lies within the Sophisticated Airbag Sensor (SAS) unit. The issue occurs under a specific, unusual circumstance: if the vehicle's battery is completely drained while the ignition is left in the 'ON' position. This specific action can cause the SAS unit to store an internal fault. When the vehicle's battery is subsequently recharged and the car is started, this stored fault triggers the airbag warning light on the dashboard and, critically, deactivates the vehicle's airbags, preventing them from deploying in the event of a collision. Mazda has confirmed that dealers have already been notified of the issue. The solution involves a software update to the existing SAS unit. Dealers will reprogram the module with improved software or, if necessary, replace the unit entirely. Source: Mazda The repair will be performed free of charge as all 171,412 affected vehicles are still covered by their original factory warranty. Owners of the affected 2024 and 2025 Mazda 3 and CX-30 models will be formally notified by mail. The automaker expects to complete all owner notifications by the end of July 2025, instructing them to bring their vehicle to an authorized dealer for the repair. Airbags On Mazda's Most Affordable Cars Might Not Work

Over 170,000 Vehicles Affected By Airbag Issues It's the start of a new week, and that means new recalls are being issued by the NHTSA. This time, it's Mazda at fault, with over 170,000 Mazda3 hatchbacks and CX-30 crossovers being recalled for an airbag issue that occurs under very specific circumstances. According to the recall documents, 2024-2025 examples of the abovementioned vehicles could have a faulty sensor logic that may set an error code that deactivates the airbags. Every Recalled Vehicle Has The Defect Typically, when manufacturers discover an issue that requires a recall, the remedy only needs to be applied to a select percentage of the overall production run, but in this case, all 51,857 Mazda3s and 119,555 CX-30s (171,412 vehicles in total) have the defect, which only impacts vehicles in the U.S. and Canada. That's because the issue is not a small physical fault but an issue with the software they're all running. If the ignition switch is left on for more than two hours without the engine on and the battery dies, the airbag sensor stores an internal fault that causes the airbag warning light to be activated, and the airbags won't deploy in the event of a crash after the vehicle is restarted. Interestingly, the NHTSA notes that the issue doesn't appear if the battery is depleted in another way. No Injuries Reported Despite Year-Long Investigation Mazda first learned of the issue after a report was made in June last year, and it spent November and December implementing improved airbag sensor technology that will prevent the issue from appearing. Given the unusual circumstance in which the fault becomes evident, it's no surprise that it took so long for Mazda to correctly determine its cause. Fortunately, no injuries or accidents have been reported as a result of the issue. Dealers have been informed of the new software update for the recall and are preparing to provide a fix to owners at no cost to them. Owners will be notified by July 28, but in the meantime, NHTSA campaign number 25V357000 refers. Source: Mazda About the Author Sebastian Cenizo View Profile

Over 183,000 Mazda vehicles recalled. See impacted models. Mazda has issued two separate recalls impacting a total of more than 183,000 vehicles due to issues with airbags not deploying and an indicator light that may not flash. According to notices posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recalls impact a combined 183,656 vehicles, including certain cars in the following models: Airbag issue: 2024-2025 CX-30 and 2024-2025 Mazda3 2024-2025 CX-30 and 2024-2025 Mazda3 Indicator light issue: 2024-2025 Mazda MX-5 Here's what we know about each recall so far. The vehicles were recalled because the airbags may not deploy in a crash, increasing the risk of injuries. According to Mazda, certain 2024-2025 Mazda3 and CX30 vehicles may have faulty air bag sensors that set an error code, which could deactivate the airbags due to a low battery condition. The vehicles were built between May 2023 and January 2025 in Mexico and Japan. Mazda began investigating the issue after someone within the U.S. market reported an airbag warning light issue in June 2024. 'At that time, Mazda determined that the issue was non-safety related, as it was attributed to customer usage and/or error of leaving the ignition in the 'ON' position for two or more hours without starting the engine,' the company said. 'This caused the battery to deplete to a level where the engine could no longer be started, resulting in the illumination of the air bag warning light after the battery is recharged then the engine is started.' To fix the issue, dealers will reprogram the air bag sensor units with new software or replace the unit for free. Mazda said it plans to mail owners notification letters by July 28. The company said an indicator light on the vehicle fails to light up and warn drivers of a traction control system or dynamic stability control system issue, increasing the likelihood of them crashing. The indicator light recall includes certain 2024-2025 Mazda MX-5 vehicles. Mazda said it identified the issue after a supplier found a software error in February. The company added it made mass production changes with improved software in March. 'As of May 19, 2025, Mazda is not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries related to this concern,' the company wrote. 'Also, as of this date, no field report has been received by the U.S. and the U.S. Territories.' Mazda said dealers will replace the dynamic stability control unit for free. The company will mail owner notification letters by July 21. Owners can contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500, option 6. Saleen Martin is a reporter on USA TODAY's NOW team.
