Things you should never put in the dishwasher

I have a different relationship with each of my kitchen appliances. With the fridge, I feel a friendly familiarity, and with my microwave, a sort of unspoken camaraderie. I interact with both frequently, sometimes several times a day. With dishwashers, though, there is a reverence. My family didn't own one until I was much older, and it has always seemed like a mysterious invention to me. Every time I use one now, I'm worried about doing something wrong, specifically whether I'm putting in an item that I shouldn't. If you've ever had similar worries, here's what you should know. Things you should not put in your dishwasher Acrylic dishware or accessories: Crazing (small cracks through the acrylic) might occur. Brass, bronze, copper, and pewter items: High-temperature water and detergent can cause discoloration, says Larry Ciufo, who has tested hundreds of dishwashers at CR over the past 20 years. Cast-iron cookware: You risk removing the seasoning—the baked-on oil in your pan that helps prevent food from sticking—which can cause the pan to rust. Insulated mugs: Unless they're labeled as dishwasher-safe, water can get inside the seal between the inner and outer layers of these mugs, which might affect their ability to retain heat or keep drinks cold. Nonstick pans: If the manufacturer doesn't say it's dishwasher-safe, avoid putting them in the dishwasher because the washing process could wear away the coating, Ciufo says. Sharp knives: Even if they're labeled dishwasher-safe, you should wash them by hand because they can get dull after rubbing against other cutlery in the basket. Tin items: Tin will rust if washed in the dishwasher, so you should hand-wash and dry them immediately. Wood: Water and heat can result in your wooden salad bowls or cutting boards warping and cracking. Things that are generally safe, but with caveats Aluminum is usually dishwasher-safe, but minerals in the water might cause spots or darkening. To remove those, scour with a soap-filled steel wool pad. China, crystal, and stoneware are mostly safe, but if the pieces are hand-painted or fragile, wash them by hand. It's also better to hand-wash glasses or dishes with gold leaf. Milk-glass items might yellow after repeated washings in the dishwasher. Plastic items vary in their ability to withstand heat and detergents, so check whether they're dishwasher-safe and make sure to place them on the top rack—away from the heating element—and don't select cycles that use higher wash or dry temperatures. Stainless steel and silver are generally OK to put in the dishwasher, but make sure you run your rinse cycle if you're not running the wash cycle immediately, because prolonged contact with food can damage their finish. Modern basement parking shaping up under Nagpur rly station revamp

1 2 Nagpur: The Nagpur railway station redevelopment project has achieved a significant milestone with substantial progress in the construction of the West Wing-3 (WW-3) basement parking structure. The development is a key component of the station modernisation plan. The basement parking facility aims to enhance commuter convenience and alleviate congestion in one of the region's busiest railway hubs, said an official. The WW-3 basement parking project, executed in two phases, is set to transform the station's infrastructure in a major way. Phase I, spanning 1,800 square metres, was completed and handed over to Central Railway Nagpur division in September 2024, said an official. This section is operational as a surface-level parking zone, providing relief to commuters. Alongside mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and firefighting (MEPF) installations, as well as interior works, the civil work is progressing steadily. Excavation and foundation works for Phase II, covering 1,620 square metres, have been completed, said an official. Approximately 90% of the basement slab casting has been completed, and shuttering for the remaining 10% is under way. Phase II will further decongest the area, offering commuters a modern and spacious underground parking facility. The achievement underscores Central Railway's initiatives of developing smart, efficient and passenger-centric infrastructure. The revamped Nagpur station is poised to become a future-ready railway hub, aligning with India's vision for world-class transportation networks. Central Railway officials said they are focused on timely completion of works. "The WW-3 basement parking facility is a significant step toward making Nagpur railway station a model of efficiency and convenience," said a CR official.

Activists question if footboard bullies caused overcrowding leading to Mumbra mishap

Thane: Days after the Central Railway appealed to commuters to share inputs or information that could assist in the Mumbra mishap investigations, passenger activists from Thane suburbs pointed out if footboard bullies aboard the locals may have led to overcrowding in tthe Kasara-CSMT coach that day. Prabhakar Gangavne, a railway commuter and activist from Karjat who travels to Thane daily, said the railways must check if footboard bullies could have partially blocked the doors of coaches of the train at Diva and led to overcrowding. "These bullies are frequent on suburban trains and make it difficult for passengers to board trains even at busy stations like Thane, Kalyan, and Dombivli, leaving many commuters with limited foothold and often leading to fights," he said. Activist Ananda Patil from Diva, who previously alerted the CR administration about the alleged deadly curve ahead of Mumbra stations has now raised questions if the passenger loads were bulging out excessively from one side of the coaches that may have also led to the 'unusual clash' of bags of commuters travelling in trains moving in opposite directions. "The authorities should scan the CCTV footage at Diva to check for the presence of these bullies. " He also claimed the halts of long destination trains from Kasara-Karjat at Diva were responsible for overcrowding and suggested that services originating from Kalyan and Ambarnath be given more halts instead.

The 10 most popular new cars & SUVs of 2025 (so far), according to Consumer Reports

Looming economic uncertainties, stubbornly high interest rates, and Trump's tariffs on imported auto parts and automobiles might lead you to think that 2025 is the worst time ever to buy a new car. But 3.9 million new vehicles were sold in the first few months of the year, which represented a 4% increase over 2024. And while current economic headwinds have caused Cox Automotive to reduce its full-year new vehicle sales estimates from 16.3 million to 15.6 million, that still means millions of people are heading over to their dealerships to purchase a new car or SUV. Because the simple fact is, if you need a new car, you need a new car. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Buying a new vehicle seems to be an increasingly smart investment, due to the fact that used cars aren't the steals they used to be. Their prices have also been on the rise: According to data from Edmunds, the average price of a three-year-old vehicle is now an incredible $30,522, which significantly narrows the cost differential between new and used vehicles. There are plenty of advantages to buying a new vehicle, with safety and reliability at the top of the list. These days, automatic emergency braking (AEB) comes standard on most new vehicles, while blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic warning systems are other common new-vehicle features that can often help to prevent accidents from occurring in the first place. New cars are more reliable In addition, shiny new cars come with shiny new components, lessening the chance of immediate mechanical issues. They also have the added benefit of a factory warranty, which covers repairs for a certain period-something older, pre-owned vehicles might not. In fact, its entire purpose, which is to provide unbiased reviews of tens of thousands of products in order to inform consumers on product quality and safety, was shaped by the harsh economic realities of the Great Depression. They include: Avoid buying first-year "redesigned" models, which have received plenty of media hype and, often, a steep price tag to match. Instead, CR suggests waiting another year so that the vehicles' inflated sticker price comes down-and any "kinks" the new model experiences have been worked out, consumers should select smaller vehicles, or ones with fewer features, simply due to the fact that they have lower material and manufacturing costs. Because smaller vehicles weigh less, they also experience lower destination charges, which get passed on to the consumer. CR suggests that car buyers do their research online and find out what prices cars in their area are selling for, as well as what their MSRP is. That can help you determine a vehicle's true value-as well as how much you're willing to spend to get it. Consumer Reports listens to the feedback it receives from its 6 million members; in fact, it takes into account which cars and SUVs consumers are searching for online when it compiles its list of "most popular" vehicles. CR boosts passenger safety with enhanced vigilance at Nagpur division stations

Nagpur: In a decisive move to prioritise passenger safety, Central Railway (CR) has launched a robust security initiative across key stations in the Nagpur Division. A dedicated joint team, comprising the deputy station superintendent (DySS), Railway Protection Force (RPF), and ticket checking (TC) staff, was deployed to ensure railway premises remain secure, orderly, and free from unauthorised activities. The initiative focuses on maintaining a safe travel environment through regular inspections of platforms, waiting halls, and other passenger areas. These checks, conducted round-the-clock at frequent intervals, aim to verify presence of bona fide travellers & deter anti-social elements. The team swiftly addresses irregularities such as ticketless travel, unauthorised persons, or suspicious behaviour, taking action under railway regulations. This includes imposing penalties, removing unauthorised individuals, and coordinating with local authorities. The vigilance has already yielded positive results, with passengers expressing appreciation for visible presence & prompt response of staff. Divisional security commissioner Manoj Kumar announced manpower was deployed at Nagpur station to strengthen these efforts. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
