RSS has evolved into a respected global outfit: Maha Guv

Mumbai, June 20 (UNI) Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan said that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which was founded in 1925, has evolved into a respected global organisation, with branches across many countries, according to a statement issued here on Friday. The Governor was speaking on the occasion of a book release ceremony in Raj Bhavan titled 'Why Are We in the RSS...?' written by author, ideologue and RSS pracharak Ramesh Patange. Countering what he termed as the false narrative that the RSS is an upper caste organisation, Governor Radhakrishnan asserted that RSS has always embodied inclusivity, rooted in the core values of Sanatana Dharma — equality, service, and unity. Complimenting Patange for bringing out a book on RSS in the organisation's centenary year, the Governor praised Patange for dispelling through well-researched evidence, historical facts, and reasoned arguments, the politically motivated myth that the RSS is an upper-caste organisation. He further noted that RSS volunteers have consistently risen to serve the nation during times of crisis—whether during earthquakes, floods, droughts, or railway accidents across the country. Reflecting on the organisation's journey, the Governor acknowledged that the RSS has faced numerous challenges over the past 100 years, including two bans — one following the tragic assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Yet, he said, the dedication of thousands of swayamsevaks and pracharaks has ensured that the organisation remains strong and vibrant. He also commended RSS workers for fostering emotional integration between the northeastern states and the rest of the country. The Governor pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, himself a former pracharak, exemplifies the spirit of selfless service inspired by the RSS. He said under the leadership of the Prime Minister, India not only provided free Covid-19 vaccinations to its citizens but also extended support to other nations through vaccine exports. Dr Ashwin Ranjaniker, translator of Patange's original Marathi book 'Aamhi Sanghat Ka Aahot?...', secretary to the Governor Dr. Prashant Narnaware and invitees were present. 'Saptahik Vivek' has published the book on the occasion of the centenary year of the RSS. The book has a foreword by RSS Sarsanghchalak Dr Mohan Bhagwat. UNI AAA PRS

Maha Guv urges Portugal to focus on select sectors to increase trade volume

Mumbai, June 10 (UNI) Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan on Tuesday suggested that Portugal should focus on select sectors such as infrastructure, information technology, tourism, and textiles, and make efforts to increase the current trade volume from USD 1.2 billion to at least USD 10 billion. According to a statement issued by the Governor's house, the suggestion was made during a courtesy meeting between Ambassador of the Republic of Portugal in India, João Manuel Mendes Ribeiro de Almeida, and the Governor of Maharashtra at Raj Bhavan, here. Stating that Portugal and India share a historical relationship, the Ambassador said Portugal is now focusing on the future and is keen to enhance cooperation with India across various sectors, including trade. In this context, he said, Portugal is also interested in signing a memorandum of understanding with Maharashtra. The Ambassador mentioned that this year holds special significance for both India and Portugal, as it marks the 50th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations. He informed that efforts are underway to strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas such as trade, tourism, textiles and information technology. He told the Governor that he was meeting over 100 business representatives in Mumbai. The Ambassador also informed that around 1.25 lakh Indians reside in Portugal and that they had integrated well into Portuguese society. He said Indians possess a wide range of skills and added that Portugal currently has a growing need for skilled manpower. Sharing that Portugal is ranked the fifth safest country in the world next only to the Scandinavian countries, the Ambassador added that Portugal is a leading destination in global tourism. He expressed Portugal's interest in increasing cooperation with India in the field of tourism. The Ambassador also shared that Portuguese is spoken in around 15 countries, including Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, East Timor, among others. Welcoming the Ambassador to Maharashtra, Governor Radhakrishnan noted that Spanish and Portuguese are widely spoken languages across the world. He told the Ambassador that in his capacity as Chancellor of universities in Maharashtra, he has advised universities to offer at least one European language to the students. He noted that learning foreign languages would help students explore career and business opportunities internationally. UNI AAA SS

State govt establishes Kumbh Mela authority

Nashik: State govt has established the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority, modelled on the Prayagraj Mela Authority, with the Nashik divisional commissioner as chairperson. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This authority will operate under the direction of a committee of ministers. On June 4, governor CP Radhakrishnan signed an ordinance establishing the 'Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Authority'. "State govt decided to form the authority for Kumbh Mela. This will expedite developmental works related to the conduct of the religious fair," stated Praveen Gedam, Nashik's divisional commissioner Political analysts suggest this structure, with the authority reporting to the Ccmmittee of ministers, addresses the ongoing dispute over Nashik's guardian minister position and subsequent control of the Kumbh Mela committee. "The committee's oversight will ensure local political representation in the authority's functioning," the analyst suggested. According to the ordinance, the committee will oversee the authority's operations, evaluate its performance, and examine its reports, establishing political supervision over the Kumbh Mela proceedings. District administration officials confirmed that the authority included the Nashik collector and inspector general of police as vice-chairpersons, alongside Ahilyanagar collector, NMC chief and other officials as members. "The authority grants the Kumbh Mela commissioner direct control over designated staff, with the chairperson maintaining oversight," said the officer.

Dowry death: MVA team asks guv to oust women panel's head

Mumbai: A fortnight after the daughter-in-law of a now expelled Pune NCP leader died by suicide allegedly after being tortured for dowry, a delegation of women MVA functionaries called on governor C P Radhakrishnan on Tuesday to seek the removal of state women's commission head Rupali Chakankar, who is also president of the women's wing of NCP, alleging partisanship. The delegation told the governor that the Pune woman, Vaishnavi Hagawane, was mentally tortured and driven to suicide, adding that she had lodged a complaint with the women's commission but it remained a silent spectator. NCP (SP) leader Rohini Khadse, who was part of the delegation, alleged that Chakankar failed to take cognisance of multiple complaints by women in different cases in the last six months, following which there was a spurt in violence. "In our opinion, the state women's commission has failed to take action even on serious complaints of gross injustice on women and domestic violence," she said. She said it appears that the Chakankar-led women's commission is casual in its approach to complaints by women and lacks seriousness. "Since she has political affiliations, we have urged the governor to appoint an apolitical person to the post who will perform her duties seriously and ensure justice to womenfolk." Besides Khadse, who heads the women's wing of NCP (SP), Congress legislator Jyoti Gaikwad, Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Sushama Andhare, former legislator Vidya Chavan, former Mumbai mayor Kishori Pednekar, and Jayashri Shelke called on the governor. Vaishnavi (24) was found hanging in her marital home on May 16. Her family alleged that she suffered harassment at the hands of her in-laws—the family of expelled NCP leader Rajendra Hagawane—over a Rs 2-crore dowry demand. Six people have been arrested in the case so far.

Chandy Oommen faces backlash for inviting Maharashtra Governor to youth sports programme

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Son of former CM Oommen Chandy and Puthuppally MLA Chandy Oommen has kicked up a controversy by inviting Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan to inaugurate a free sports training programme to be held on May 4 in his constituency, aimed at attracting youngsters to sports and keep them away from drugs. C P Radhakrishnan was an RSS Swayamsevak and a BJP national leader before being appointed as Maharashtra governor. The programme comes at a time when the state Congress leadership is in a direct fight with the BJP in Palakkad after the latter locked horns with Rahul Mamkootathil over the naming of a school after RSS founder K B Hedgewar. The programme is organised by Oommen Chandy Foundation and Don Bosco Community Sports Centre against the increasing use of drugs among youngsters. The programme aims to channelise youngsters towards sports activity. Under the programme 'Sports for a Change,' the foundation will give football training to youngsters in the age group of 10-18 years. 'The governor's office had contacted and informed me that C P Radhakrishnan wanted to pay homage at the tomb of Appa,' Chandy Oommen told TNIE. 'It was a big surprise for me. It was a great gesture on his part to show humanity,' he said. Chandy said that three panchayats from Puthupally and Changanassery segments are included in the project. Radhakrishnan is coming to Puthupally to participate in another programme. He will reach the Church at 10.30 am after inaugurating a cultural conference at Puthuppally Church. Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan told TNIE that he was unaware of the programme Oommen Chandy Foundation organised. 'The Maharashtra governor is to inaugurate the cultural conference at Puthuppally Church. There is nothing wrong in inviting him to that programme as the governor is a constitutional post and is considered non-partisan,' he said.
