Trio of towers next to Commercial-Broadway station approved

Vancouver city council has approved a rezoning application for a contentious housing development next to one of the region's busiest transit hubs. The approval comes after nearly a decade of proposals, pushback and debate for the site adjacent to the Commercial-Broadway SkyTrain station. The approved plan will see a Safeway supermarket and large parking lot redeveloped into 1,044 rental homes in three towers with heights of 44, 38 and 37 storeys. City of Vancouver The approval comes about a month after a public hearing that saw about 100 people turn out to speak, with passionate feelings on both sides. Story continues below advertisement On Tuesday, the proposal passed, with Mayor Ken Sim and most councillors in support. COPE Coun. Sean Orr voted against the rezoning, while Green Coun. Pete Fry abstained. 'I worry that we are giving the developer double the height and we're not seeing the public benefits that we could be seeing at the site,' Orr said during the debate. 2:14 Drastic changes made to Broadway-Commercial Safety redevelopment plan Under the rezoning approved Tuesday, 10 per cent of the rental units will be held at the citywide average of market rates, while the remainder will be leased at going market rates. Critics called for the development to mirror rules under the Broadway Plan, which require 20 per cent of units to be held at 20 per cent below market rates. Story continues below advertisement ABC Coun. Sarah Kirby-Yung said the city simply needs more rental housing of all types. 'These are not condos that are going to stay empty,' she told council. 'These are rental homes that people are going to live in. They're not affordable for everybody, but they are more affordable than other options.' Some supporters argued that the project actually doesn't go far enough, noting that it is adjacent to the hub of two SkyTrain lines and the busy 99 B-Line bus route. 2:05 Public hearings on controversial East Vancouver development postponed again It's an argument that appears to have held sway with the mayor and councillors. 'It's by the third busiest transit hub in the region, so it just makes sense that we build there,' Sim said. Story continues below advertisement Councillors also approved an amendment aimed at maximizing public access to a 12,000-square-foot courtyard space in the project. The decision comes after years of back and forth and controversy about a development at the site. Previous drafts that faced local pushback were focused on condos rather than rentals, and included a version with two towers, the tallest of them 24 storeys, and a 2022 version that envisioned a pair of towers with one reaching 30 storeys. That version nearly made it to a public hearing in 2022, but was sidelined by the 2022 municipal election.

Interested in fostering a pup destined to change a life?

(Courtesy: Liz Saul) COPE Service Dogs welcomed a new litter of purpose-bred puppies, each one destined to change a life. These special pups are preparing to begin their journey toward becoming fully certified service dogs. COPE is reaching out to the Barrie community in search of five loving foster homes. Being a foster family for a service dog in training is more than just providing care. To be eligible, COPE is looking for homes that meet the following criteria: You are a dog lover, you live in the Barrie area, you can ensure that someone is home during the day to watch your pup. You are also required to attend weekly training sessions. If this sounds like you or someone you know, COPE is asking to hear from you. These puppies aren't just pets, they're future service animals who could help individuals with mobility challenges gain greater independence and quality of life. People can contact Helen to learn more or to express your interest in fostering. COPE's History COPE's story began in 2000, when founder Jane Boake established the organization near Barrie. Her training at the Assistance Dog Institute inspired her to bring this work to Canada. COPE's programs empower both people and dogs most notably through initiatives like Canines in the Classroom, which began in a Stayner basement and now spans several schools across the region. As these new puppies begin their training journey, they need stable, nurturing homes to help lay the foundation for their future success. COPE says they are working towards their future goal of developing chapters in other communities, and expanding the range of disabilities that may be supported by these special animals. Four-Year Prison Sentence Requested for Raúl Asencio

The legal case involving a sex video filmed and distributed by former Real Madrid youth players has taken another turn, as the legal defense team representing one of the underage victims is now formally requesting a four-year prison sentence for footballer Raúl Asencio. The case stems from an incident in 2023, when three Real Madrid youth team members recorded a sexual encounter at a beach club in Gran Canaria without the consent of the individuals involved — one of whom was a minor. According to a report from COPE, Asencio is accused of having shared the video despite not being present at the scene of the recording. The prosecution claims he received the explicit content, knew it had been filmed without permission, was aware one of the girls was underage, and that both victims had requested the video be deleted. Nonetheless, he is alleged to have shown it to a third party. As a result, he is facing charges of revealing secrets and child pornography. The prosecution is requesting: Four years in prison for Asencio A 20-month fine amounting to €10 per day €58,000 in total compensation for the underage victim The financial compensation request breaks down as follows: €27,000 for temporary injuries €21,000 for psychological trauma and post-traumatic stress €10,000 for moral damages COPE also reports that the other woman who appears in the video — who is of legal age — plans to file a similar complaint. Lamine Yamal's two-word response to the possibility of joining Real Madrid one day

Lamine Yamal's two-word response to the possibility of joining Real Madrid one day Barcelona star Lamine Yamal provided an answer which the club's supporters will no doubt be delighted with, after being questioned on the possibility of linking up with arch rivals Real Madrid at some point down the line. Wide-man Lamine, for his part, is currently away on international duty with Spain. Advertisement Fresh off a spectacular campaign on the books of Barcelona in 2024/25, the 17-year-old was afforded an expected call-up to Luis de la Fuente's squad for an upcoming Nations League meeting with France. On Monday, Lamine, in turn, took part in scheduled media duties, with one such interview having been conducted by COPE. And it was during this discussion that the prodigious young winger was drawn on an altogether interesting topic. Specifically, Lamine was asked whether he would consider one day crossing the Clásico divide, to link up with Barcelona's most bitter rivals, Real Madrid. The Spaniard, however, left no room for interpretation with his response, assuring: Advertisement 'No. Impossible.' Conor Laird – GSFN
