Woolmark & COLOURizd™ Launch Low-Impact Wool Dye Tech
In a groundbreaking move for sustainable textile innovation, Woolmark, the global authority on wool, has partnered with COLOURizd™ to introduce QuantumCOLOUR™ — a dry, resource-efficient yarn colouring process that dramatically lowers water usage, energy consumption, and costs in wool production.
Designed specifically for wool and wool blends, QuantumCOLOUR™ uses just 0.5L of water per kg of yarn and completely bypasses traditional bleaching, pre-treatment, and wastewater discharge. The process requires only a wetting agent and a pigment binder system — a major leap compared to conventional dyeing, which consumes up to 120L of water and relies on a host of harsh chemicals.
'QuantumCOLOUR™ is truly revolutionary for the wool industry,' shared Julie Davies, Woolmark's General Manager for Processing Innovation & Education Extension. 'This low-water, chemical-free technology brings beautiful tonal depth to Merino wool while eliminating the need for wastewater treatment systems.'
Unlike traditional methods that rely on chemicals like caustic soda, acids, and salts, COLOURizd™ uses a bluesign® certified pigment and binder injected into fibre bundles, ensuring vibrant results with minimal impact. The innovation has been validated on 100% Merino wool and blends with cotton, TENCEL™, and nylon, across a range of yarn counts. All trials met industry standards for durability, wear, and colourfastness, tested by accredited Woolmark labs.
Jennifer Thompson, CEO of COLOURizd™, added, 'Woolmark's leadership and reach will help us expand this technology to wool producers worldwide. We're already working with brands like Wrangler, Lee, GANT, and Cone Denim—and this partnership opens doors to the premium wool segment.'
Woolmark and COLOURizd™ will present this innovation at Pitti Immagine Filati in Florence, Italy, from July 1–3 at Booth I/20.
