Special election to decide Karman Line annexation fate

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Olympic City citizens have one last chance to vote on Tuesday, June 17, in a special election that would decide how the city will develop in the next couple of decades. The special election features a single ballot question regarding the Karman Line annexation, asking voters to approve or reject Ordinance 25-26. The ordinance concerns annexing the area known as 'Karman Line,' which consists of 1,876.24 acres located northwest of Bradley Road and Curtis Road, west of Schriever Space Force Base. The annexation vote has caused pushback from various community members, with a petition even being submitted for the annexation to be reconsidered after it was initially approved by the City Council in December. Individuals have previously expressed concerns about water, emergency services, and uncontrolled growth, among others. The land is currently vacant and agricultural. If approved, developers hope to build 6,500 homes, and the project would take around 20 years to complete. To vote, individuals need to turn in their ballot to an official drop box by 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Celebrate Father's Day and summer events at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Father's Day might be extra special this year at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo (CMZoo), where a 34-year-old silverback gorilla, Goma, is expecting his very first baby! His mate, Asha, a 32-year-old critically endangered Western lowland gorilla, is pregnant and due anytime between now and the end of July. Rachel Wright from Cheyenne Mountain Zoo stopped by with Tatooine, a Kenyan sand boa, to chat with FOX21's Krista Witiak about Father's Day excitement for gorilla Goma and the Zoo's upcoming summer events. As visitors await the new arrival, the Zoo is also gearing up for its first 21+ event of the summer: Moonlight on the Mountain, happening Thursday, June 26 from 6-9:30 p.m. Adults can enjoy beer, wine, delicious food samples, and live music – all in support of animal care at CMZoo. Primate World will be closed during the event, so if the baby is born early, it won't be visible that night. New gun law going into effect July 1

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A new bill will go into effect on July 1 that will affect concealed carry permits. Melissa Flanell, co-owner of Dragonman's gun and ammo store in El Paso County, teaches concealed carry classes and has already been implementing the new rules. 'The class… requires the range time, requires an open-book test scoring 80% or better in the classroom, 70% or better on the range,' explained Flanell. The written test will be 50 points total, meaning you can miss 10 and still pass. Flanell said the new requirements in HB 24-1174 will require stores to hire more sheriff-certified instructors to keep up with the longer classes, as well as charge more for the extra labor and materials for the class, which will fall on the customer's wallets. 'I have seen classes go up. They were anywhere from about $50-$75,' Flanell said. 'Now range anywhere from $125-$200 because now instructors will be required to take more students out on the range and all of that.' If you already have your concealed carry permit, you will be required starting July 1 to take a 3-hour refresher course. 'My classes are staying pretty busy. And I am, you know, always generally teaching a whole class,' Flanell said. Dragonman's offers classes three times a month, and some of them are all-women courses. If you don't own a gun yet, they can provide one for you for the range portion of the course. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Future police officers take part in teen academy

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — School may be out for the summer, but it's not stopping 100 local teenagers from spending two weeks learning what it takes to become a police officer. The 10th annual Pikes Peak Regional Law Enforcement Teen Academy highlights the jobs of those who serve and protect the community. For students like Brooke Ankrun, the training is preparing her for life after high school. 'Growing up, I would always dress up as a cop for Halloween, and my mom's best friend was actually a cop, and I thought she was the coolest lady in town,' said Ankrun, a Junior at Palmer Ridge High School. 'I'm definitely going to go into the criminal justice field. As of right now, I don't know if it's going to be law enforcement, but it's definitely going to be working with crime, so maybe the federal level or maybe the courtroom.' The Teen Academy, now in its 10th year, offers an exciting and educational experience for young adults to explore the inner workings of regional law enforcement agencies in El Paso County through day-long instruction and hands-on scenarios. Participants gain exposure to a wide range of law enforcement functions, including Patrol Operations, Tactical Enforcement Unit/SWAT, K-9 Unit, Mounted Patrol, Explosives Unit, Criminal Investigations (Narcotics, Investigations, Crime Lab), drone operations, search and rescue, and crisis negotiation. The hands-on activities and realistic scenarios help bring the topics taught to life. Cory Adkisson has been a School Resource Officer for the last six years. He tells FOX21 students who go through the academy act as another line of defense, should the unthinkable happen. 'It helps tremendously because all the teens who have gone through this academy just get it,' Adkisson explained. 'They have a lot bigger picture of what we're looking at and why it's important for us to know things ahead of time, and they will be more I think, more likely to come to us with information.' As a School Resource Officer, he believes the academy is helping him connect to students. 'I still remember the first day Brooke came and talked to me and started expressing her interest in learning more about law enforcement and what we do,' said Adkisson. 'It's things like that, I mean, making that connection and being able to find some common ground where we get to just bond and grow together is huge.' These two are inseparable, and now Brooke Ankrun is encouraging more young women to do what they are passionate about. 'I feel as though growing up there's been a bit of [stigma] around women going into law enforcement because there's, you know, it's like this girl against like a big bad guy and stuff and I feel like we need to shed more light that women can do it and they can be strong,' said Ankrun. A $500 scholarship will be awarded each week to one academy attendee, and there is also the opportunity for all participating teens to earn college credit through Pikes Peak State College by participating in this teen academy.
