Nissan Evaluating Hybrid And EVs For Indian Market; CEO Ivan Espinosa
For the longest time Nissan in India has been a one car OEM, with the Magnite holding fort. Rivals like Tata, Mahindra, Maruti and Hyundai and others have moved forward with a plethora of options across segments and powertrains. Nissan already confirmed that it is looking to launch three ICE cars in the next 18-24 months. But when asked about its EV and Hybrid plans in an exclusive interaction, Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa said that they are observing the hybrid and EV market in India closely and will decide on launching an electrified vehicle in the future. Nissan Leaf is one of the EVs that the company has in its global portfolio "We are revisiting our portfolio in the long term to see how we bring some exciting electrified vehicles to the Indian market later on. We have very good products in the global portfolio, but we could also be exploring what we could do with our partners in India (Renault) or by ourselves. So, we have several options that we could explore and consider. We are observing the market trends and there are several options, hybrid is one of the things we are observing very closely together with potentially battery electric vehicles, so we are looking at both", Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa said. Nissan's short-term focus will be on the three new cars that will be launched in the next two years. The first will be a 7-seater B-segment MPV, a model that will be similar in positioning to the Renault Triber, a mass-market people mover. It is expected to hit the roads in early 2026. Next will be a C-segment SUV, that is based on the CMF-B platform, which is also expected to go on sale in India. The new C-SUV from Nissan will be launched in the middle of 2026 and there will be a 7-seater version of the same, going on sale in early 2027. "For the moment, our focus is to launch these three cars in India, this is the focus that we have now, making sure we reinvigorate, revitalise our partners, our dealers and we make sure that we have a sustainable restart, rebrand of the Nissan brand in India. This is what we are dedicated to at the moment", Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa added. Nissan also confirmed that despite its divestment in Renault Nissan Alliance plant in Chennai, the company's production plans and future capacity are all secured, thanks to a strong agreement between Renault and Nissan. The company aims to sell over 100,000 units in India and export 100,000 units from India by FY2027.

Renault confirms launch of strong hybrid Duster and Boreal for India in 2026
Renault has officially confirmed the launch of its next-generation Duster SUV and its seven-seater sibling, the Boreal, for the Indian market. Both models will be built on the CMF-B platform, developed in collaboration with Nissan, and are slated to hit Indian roads in early 2026. The new-gen Duster will arrive first, with the larger Boreal (based on the globally sold Dacia Bigster) following later in the year. While initial variants will feature petrol and turbo-petrol powertrains, strong hybrid options will be introduced within 6 to 12 months after the launch. Production for the India-spec models is set to commence at the Renault-Nissan plant in Chennai this September. In line with global trends and emission norms, diesel engines will not be offered. Globally, the Duster hybrid is powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine paired with two electric motors and a 1.2 kWh battery, delivering a combined 140 bhp. It features an electric automatic gearbox, offering up to 80% pure electric drive in urban settings. The Boreal hybrid variant, known as the Dacia Bigster internationally, is expected to feature a 1.4 kWh battery, producing a total output of 153 bhp, with a 107 bhp petrol engine and a 51 bhp electric motor. Additionally, Renault is evaluating the possibility of CNG-powered variants of both the Duster and Boreal, aligning with India's growing interest in alternative fuel options. As the company continues its work on a dedicated EV, the emphasis for now will be on strong hybrids and CNG models tailored for India's evolving fuel landscape.

Nissan India plans four new models including C-SUV, Triber-based MPV and mass-market EV
Nissan Motor India is commited to its previously announced plans for India and will be launching four new cars including a B-segment MPV based on the Renault Triber platform. Speaking at a recent press conference, Saurabh Vatsa, Managing Director, Nissan Motor India, emphasised that India remains a key market for the company and that its previously disclosed product strategy remains on track. Nissan India had earlier announced that it will be launching a new seven-seater B-segment MPV as part of its future lineup in the country. This takes the upcoming product pipeline to a total of four new models, including a five-seater and a seven-seater C-SUV alongside a mass-market EV. Nissan has stated that the B-MPV, as well as the five-seater C-SUV, are currently in the pre-production phase, and both will be launched in 2026. With development underway, let us take a look at what's expected from Nissan in the coming years: Renault Triber-based seven-seater B-MPV: The first of the upcoming cars from Nissan will be a seven-seater B-MPV based on the Renault Triber while carrying a unique design. Nissan will kick things off with the upcoming B-segment MPV, expected to launch in early 2026. This three-row seven-seater will be based on the CMF-A+ platform that currently underpins the Renault Triber. However, it is being positioned as a standalone model rather than a simple rebadged iteration, and Nissan has stated it will bring a distinct design and interior. This MPV is expected to carry over the same 1.0-litre three-cylinder that powers the Triber with 71 bhp and 96 Nm of torque, mated to either a five-speed manual or automatic. Renault Duster-based five-seater C-SUV: Nissan is also developing a five-seater mid-size SUV for India. Based on the CMF-B platform, it shares its underpinnings with the Renault Duster with a distinctive exterior and interior design. The second model from Nissan to hit the streets will be a five-seater C-segment SUV, expected to launch later in 2026. This SUV will be based on the CMF-B platform that underpins the Renault Duster. The automaker says the model will borrow design cues from the globally available Nissan Patrol and will offer a high approach and departure angle. The upcoming mid-size SUV will take on the likes of the Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. It will be manufactured locally at Nissan's Chennai plant and is expected to carry over the 1.2-litre three-cylinder mild-hybrid that drives the Duster. Dacia Bigster-based seven-seater C-SUV: Nissan will follow up the MPV and the C-SUV with the launch of a seven-seater SUV, expected to launch by 2027. This model will be based on a longer wheelbase version of the CMF-B platform that underpins the Dacia Bigster, a stretched-out iteration of the Duster. However, Nissan has confirmed that the model will feature a distinctive exterior and interior design and will not be just a stretched-out version. It is expected to be positioned against premium seven-seater SUVs such as the Hyundai Alcazar and the MG Hector Plus. Now, Renault has been working on a mass-market Kwid EV for some time, and it is expected to be rebadged for the Japanese automaker. The Kwid EV is itself based on the Dacia Spring EV, which is powered by a 26.8 kWh battery, promising a single-charge range of up to 225 km. It comes with features such as a 10.1-inch infotainment display, a 7-inch digital cluster, ADAS, and more. Nissan to launch new MPV, SUV, and 7-seater SUV in India by 2027
Nissan Motor India has unveiled plans to introduce three new vehicles in the Indian market by 2027. Dispelling all speculation about Nissan's exit, the company's Managing Director Saurabh Vatsa confirmed that the company will stay in India, with plans to launch three new models within the next two a media briefing, Vatsa stated, "Nissan has had a very long stint in India, and we are not going anywhere." Vatsa said that the upcoming models aren't merely rapid launches but well-thought-out, value-for-money vehicles, featuring bold styling and advanced will launch a subcompact MPV, a midsize SUV, and a 7-seater SUV, aiming to strengthen its position in India's competitive automotive market. Currently the company's portfolio consists of the Magnite and the X-Trail. According to Managing Director Saurabh Vatsa, these launches are part of a strategic push to boost domestic sales to 100,000 units annually and another 1,00,000 units for exports by FY27. "We are on track to go to 1,00,000 units domestic and 100,000 units export in FY27," Vatsa said. The first vehicle, a sub-4 metre 7-seater MPV, is set to launch in the first quarter of 2026 (January–March). Built on the Renault-Nissan Alliance's CMF-A+ platform, shared with the Renault Triber. The upcoming Nissan MPV is expected to be priced similarly to the Renault Triber, which is priced between Rs 6.15 lakh (ex-showroom) and Rs 8.97 lakh (ex-showroom). The Nissan MPV will likely offer a 1.0-litre petrol engine with manual and AMT options and is expected to offer CNG option as mid-2026, Nissan will launch a 5-seater SUV based on the CMF-B platform, sharing underpinnings with the upcoming Renault Duster. Designed to compete with the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Honda Elevate, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq, the upcoming Nissan 5-seater SUV will boast a look inspired by the Nissan Patrol. The third model, a 7-seater SUV, will arrive in early 2027, also on the CMF-B platform but with a longer wheelbase. Positioned to rival the Hyundai Alcazar, MG Hector Plus, Mahindra XUV700, and Tata Safari. Boreal to be new Renault 7-seater SUV. Is it the bigger Duster?
Renault has officially unveiled the name of its upcoming 7-seater SUV, the Renault Boreal, set to join the Duster in its renewed push for the Indian market. Announced ahead of its global debut, the Boreal will be a three-row sibling to the Duster, built on the CMF-B platform. The Boreal is poised to make its mark in over 70 non-European markets, including India, with a launch planned for 2026 and is expected to come to India in has plans to launch five new models in the next couple of years in India. Among them will be a 5-seater SUV, a 7-seater SUV and an electric vehicle (EV). The India-spec 7-seater SUV could be based on the Boreal. The new Duster is expected to enter the Indian market later this year. The company also opened a design centre in Chennai which will cater to both Indian and international trademarked the name 'Boreal' in India last year, fueling speculation about its intended use. The company also released a teaser showcasing the SUV's branding, featuring the new logo embossed on the tailgate. The Renault Boreal shares its core architecture and design language with the new Duster, but its extended wheelbase—around 4.6 meters in length—accommodates a third row of seats, making it ideal for large families. Its exterior boasts Y-shaped LED headlights and taillights, a sleek grille with an illuminated Renault logo, and a muscular bumper with a robust skid plate. Flared wheel arches, thick body cladding, and a blacked-out pillar creating a floating roof effect enhance its rugged yet stylish aesthetic. The Boreal also features roof rails, a rear skid plate, and a roof-mounted spoiler, and alloy wheels ranging from 17 to 19 inches depending on the the Boreal promises a modern and tech-laden cabin. A 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay takes center stage, complemented by a 7-inch digital driver's display. Other expected features include ventilated front seats, wireless phone charging, a six-speaker audio system, and an electronic parking brake. Safety is prioritized with multiple airbags, electronic stability control, a 360-degree camera, and potentially Level 2 ADAS in higher trims, though ADAS availability in India remains unconfirmed. While Renault has yet to disclose full specifications, the Boreal is expected to share powertrain options with the Duster.
