304 survey numbers found in Pallikaranai Marsh Ramsar site
Chennai: There are at least 304 survey numbers, several of them with substantial buildings, within Chennai's Pallikaranai Marsh Ramsar site, the state wetland authority informed National Green Tribunal (NGT) in a report last week. The report, prepared with satellite data and e-governance records, was submitted during a hearing in a suo motu case initiated in July 2023. The case pertains to allegations that a private builder was laying a road by dumping soil and construction debris into Perumbakkam marshland using heavy machinery. During the recent hearing, NGT sought clarity on whether the disputed road lies within the Ramsar site's zone of influence. According to the latest affidavit, the survey and sub-division numbers span seven revenue villages, including Perumbakkam, Sholinganallur-I, Pallikaranai, Perungudi, Jalladianpet, Injambakkam, and Okkiyam Thoraipakkam. The wetland authority noted that while the survey number data is indicative, final verification is awaited from directorate of survey and settlement. The outcome will help CMDA incorporate Ramsar boundaries and their influence zones into the upcoming master plan 2026. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Everybody Is Switching To This Enterprise Accounting Software [Take a Look] Accounting ERP Click Here Undo This verification was initiated following an Oct 2024 CMDA meeting, in which it was resolved to geo-tag these survey numbers with help of Anna University and TN e-governance agency. The authority also said the survey was necessary to avoid discrepancies, as parts of certain survey numbers combine marshland with built-up areas. The tribunal had previously questioned whether CMDA revised its master plan to account for Perumbakkam being declared part of a Ramsar site in July 2022, especially since the II Master Plan continues to categorise the area as a 'primary residential zone'. The builder's counsel, in earlier submissions, claimed that the land was filled only to facilitate a survey by govt officials. But in July 2024, the wetland authority confirmed the road was built by mobilising construction material inside the marshland and that the location lies adjoining Ramsar boundary. In April 2025, the NGT directed CMDA to file a comprehensive update on planned changes to the master plan in light of the marshland's ecological significance and to spell out protections for Ecologically Sensitive Zones.

Kuthambakkam bus station set to be opened by end of Aug, says Sekarbabu
Chennai: The long-awaited Kuthambakkam bus station will be operational by the end of August, as Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has fast-tracked key infrastructure projects under the North Chennai Development Scheme, said CMDA minister P K Sekarbabu. On Friday, Sekarbabu, along with senior officials, reviewed the progress of multiple works —including bus stations, healthcare centres, and civic offices — aimed at bridging infrastructure gaps in Kolathur and surrounding areas. "Initially, the infrastructure for a major project such as Kuthambakkam bus station was developed without fully accounting for passenger needs, which led to technical errors and delays due to the need for inter-departmental coordination," the minister said. "We're now addressing those gaps by factoring in traffic flow, monsoon-related waterlogging, and essential commuter amenities. A lot of additional work is being done. Chief minister M K Stalin is personally reviewing progress and has directed us to fast-track the completion." Sekarbabu inspected other ongoing projects under the North Chennai Development Scheme in Kolathur constituency. These include the Kolathur and Thiru Vi Ka Nagar bus stations, a dialysis centre being constructed on Jaganathan Street in Agaram, the Periyar Nagar bus station, a new modern market on Paper Mills Road, and a new taluk office, sub-registrar office, and co-working centre. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pinga-Pinga e HBP? Since the current administration took office, new bus stations are being developed in Mahabalipuram, Chengalpattu, Avadi, and T Nagar," he said. Officials said the work at the Periyar Nagar and Thiru Vi Ka Nagar bus stations will be completed by July 2025. "There are plans to establish free dialysis centres for the underprivileged in the port and Kolathur areas. We are also reconstructing schools, markets, and gyms, and a total of 80 such development projects are scheduled for completion by Dec 2025 or Jan 2026," he added. Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority to set up 5 more Mudhalvar Padaippagams
Five public libraries are to be redesigned as Muthalvar Padaippagam (CM Spaces) under a ₹6.93-crore project by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA). These spaces are designed to serve as co-working environments, which encourage both concentration and relaxation for the public. According to the CMDA, every space is expected to have air-conditioned reading spaces along with free high-speed internet workstations and separate sound-buffered zones, designed specifically for competitive exam preparation. The most ambitious project among the five is a ₹1.92 crore facility in Cheriyan Nagar, which is expected to feature cutting-edge study pods and specialised shelving systems designed for optimal book preservation and reader access, according to CMDA. Raise awareness and build opportunities N. Sakthivel from Vysai Thozhargal said, 'Such initiatives are non-existent in north Chennai. So, the initiative is greatly welcomed. College students in this area often lack career guidance. Many are hesitant to take proactive steps because they do not understand the processes needed to achieve their goals. Additionally, many come from backgrounds that do not support their aspirations.' Archanaa Seker, a Chennai-based activist and researcher, said such initiatives offering quality facilities in working-class neighbourhoods, would enable users to benefit significantly from a multi-use working and learning space. The CM Space in Kolathur has been well received by the local public, and is always buzzing as the slots are almost always full, she said. 'However, to boost entrepreneurship, there needs to be additional support and programmes that build capacity, skill sets, and enables networks to be formed — especially to encourage women to use the space. What happens in the space for those who come there, and how to bring more people in, especially women, is as important as creating the space itself,' Ms. Seker added.
