DSWD to assist PWD mauled by fellow bus passengers on EDSA
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Friday said it is searching for the person with disability who was mauled by fellow bus passengers on EDSA, to extend assistance to him and give him intervention. 'Nakikipag-ugnayan na tayo upang mahanap ang biktima at mabigyan ng kaukulang assistance," DSWD's Crisis Intervention Program (CIP) Director Edwin Morata said. (We are coordinating [with authorities] to find the victim and give the necessary assistance.) Aside from his physical injuries, the PWD also experienced trauma from the incident and needs assistance to process it, he added. "Maliban sa tinamo niyang injury, kakailanganin din ang assistance upang matulungan siyang iprocess ang trauma mula sa pangyayari,' Morata said. On June 9, a PWD reportedly bit passengers inside a Precious Grace Transport bus traveling on the EDSA busway. His fellow passengers then ganged up on him mauled him and allegedly tased him, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said. 'Binugbog, kinuyog 'yung isang kababayan natin na may kapansanan sa loob ng isang bus. Krimen 'yan,' said DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon in a press briefing. (A fellow Filipino with a disability was mauled inside a bus. That's a crime.) In the viral video, the PWD can be heard crying for help after some passengers tried to kick him out of the bus. The DSWD also condemned the incident and said it was inhumane. 'Walang anumang excuse ang ginawa nilang pambubugbog sa nakikita naman nilang person with disability at alam nilang nangangailangan ng unawa. Hindi makatao ang gawaing ganun. Hindi lang isa, tinadyakan, sinusuntok pagkatapos ay inelectrocute pa,' Morata said. (There is no excuse to the mauling against the person they saw who had a disability and needed understanding. What they did was inhumane. Not only did they step on him, they also punched him and electrocuted him.) PWDs are one of the most vulnerable groups in society and are under the stewardship of the State, he added. 'Government is exerting all efforts to ensure that the persons with disability sector is provided with the needed assistance to help protect their rights, welfare, and lead them to development. Violent actions against any member of the sector set us back in achieving our goal of giving them a chance to nation building,' Morata said. 'Hindi pwedeng palagpasin ang ganitong kalupitan, sa person with disability man or sa ibang sektor. Malinaw na abuso ang ginawa nila. Kung may impormasyon kayo ukol sa mga nanakit, ipagbigay alam po sa kapulisan, sa amin, or sa alinmang ahensiya ng gobyerno,' he added. (This kind of cruelty cannot be ignored, whether committed against a PWD or someone from another sector. It is clear that it was abuse. If you have any information about those who hurt him, please let the police, DSWD, or any government agency know.) The DOTr said that the bus driver and the conductor should be held responsible for the situation. Meanwhile, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) suspended their driver's license for 90 days. The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board summoned Precious Grace to explain the incident. It also suspended 10 of its units for 30 days. A hearing on the matter has been set for June 25. However, the bus company's lawyer said that the driver and the conductor already took action on the incident. According to the testimony submitted by the driver to the LTO, a passenger reported to him that another passenger was biting people inside the bus. When they reached the Main Avenue station, they immediately reported the incident to the authorities. They sought the assistance of Coast Guard personnel to bring out the PWD passenger. But the authorities failed to do so. The PWD bit another person after the bus was already close to Buendia station, and the incident was reported to the authorities. The driver said that he even told the passengers to stop ganging up on the PWD, but nobody listened to him. 'To my mind, yung driver at saka konduktor, ginawa nila ang responsibilidad nila,' said Alex Verzosa, lawyer for Precious Grace Transport. (To my mind, the driver and conductor fulfilled their responsibilities.) —KG, GMA Integrated News

In state's first during current wave, 44-year-old Covid patient dies at Rims
1 2 Ranchi: A 44-year-old man, who tested positive for Covid-19, died of co-morbid conditions at the state-run Rims here, officials said on Tuesday. It is the first Covid-related casualty of the state in the current wave. Four new cases were also detected in Ranchi district during the day, taking the tally of the cases across the district to 12. As the state health department did not release any figures, there is no cumulative number of Covid cases for Jharkhand though the Union health ministry's Covid dashboard put the number of cases in the state to 6, an increase of two since Monday. The state detected its first Covid case of the current wave on May 24 this year when filmmaker Lal Vijay Shahdeo contracted the disease while returning from Mumbai. Talking about the death on Tuesday, Rims officials said the patient had multiple and severe co-morbid conditions. Doctors at the hospital said the exact cause of the death was refractory septic shock, a condition marked by circulatory failure and not respiratory failure, which is typically associated with Covid fatalities. He was referred to Rims from the Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP) on June 2 after experiencing a severe medical emergency. According to doctors, the patient suffered cardiac arrest after some food became lodged in his throat, leading to respiratory distress. He was administered CPR and later intubated before being transferred to Rims for ventilator support. A report of his medical examination said the patient was suffering from aspiration pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). He was placed on ventilator support in the trauma centre due to his critical condition. In addition to these complications, he was also battling several other pre-existing health issues. He tested positive for Covid on June 5 during routine testing of admitted patients. Both Rims authorities and Ranchi civil surgeon Dr Prabhat Kumar couldn't say whether the deceased has a past Covid history or not. Dr Kumar, remarked, "With the current rise in Covid cases and the unfortunate first death linked to a co-morbid patient, it is crucial for people to remain vigilant and there is no panic. Our focus is on managing this situation with care and emphasizing the importance of safety measures."

Marjorie Taylor Greene accused of assembling ‘rogues' gallery' to attack NGOs
The far-right congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has assembled a 'rogues' gallery of extremists, conspiracy theorists and C-team political operatives' to promote Donald Trump's crackdown on non-government organisations (NGOs), a congressional watchdog has claimed. The House of Representatives' Delivering on Government Efficiency (Doge) subcommittee, chaired by Greene, is due to hold a hearing on Wednesday entitled 'Public Funds, Private Agendas: NGOs Gone Wild'. The subcommittee said in a press release that the hearing will 'expose' the use of federal funds by NGOs to advance 'radical' agendas such as 'open borders and the Green New Deal scam'. It frames its work as an investigation of the alleged funneling of taxpayer dollars to politically motivated groups while 'lining the pockets of their friends and allies'. But a memo from the Congressional Integrity Project (CIP), obtained by the Guardian, condemns the hearing as 'political theater', 'weaponized government oversight' and an exercise in hypocrisy, given the substantial federal funding received by Republican allies and rightwing groups. While attacking civil society organisations for receiving federal grants, the memo says, 'their own networks have systematically benefited from government contracts, subsidies, and loans worth billions of dollars'. Wednesday's hearing on Capitol Hill will feature witnesses Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies; Daniel Turner, founder and executive director of Power the Future; and Scott Walter, president of the Capital Research Center. The CIP describes Greene's line-up as 'rogues' gallery of extremists, conspiracy theorists and C-team political operatives masquerading as government watchdogs'. It notes that the Center for Immigration Studies has been designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center and regularly circulates content from 'white nationalist and antisemitic writers'. Krikorian has made statements including that Haiti's problems stem from not being 'colonised long enough'. The memo adds that CIS received more than $700,000 in PPP loans and is now under investigation by the justice department for potentially lying to obtain at least one of them. 'That's right, Republicans chose as their star witness on government waste someone who may have committed fraud to secure government money for his organization.' The CIP describes Turner as a career political operative who worked for the Charles Koch Institute before founding Power the Future, a climate-denial organisation that attacks environmental groups for receiving federal grants. Yet Turner's former employer, Charles Koch, has received more than $750m in government subsidies. The memo states: 'Turner, who calls 'climate change the slippery slope to socialism' and promotes conspiracy theories about climate science, represents everything wrong with this sham hearing. 'He's a junior varsity Republican operative masquerading as an objective analyst while advancing the financial interests of the fossil fuel industry – the same interests that have systematically profited from the very government largesse he now pretends to oppose.' Walter leads the Capital Research Center, 'a secretive organization that won't disclose its donors while attacking others for lacking transparency', the CIP alleges. 'His organization's fiscal arrangements appear designed to shield activities from public scrutiny, yet he positions himself as a watchdog exposing liberal 'dark money'.' In 2023, according to the memo, Walter helped funnel nearly $600,000 in anonymous donations to supreme court justice Clarence Thomas's wife Ginni Thomas's group while his organisation had business before the supreme court, creating conflicts of interest. Walter also has a history of making or defending offensive statements about race, gender and sexual orientation. He publicly defended a university professor accused of making racist statements, said average Americans have 'disgust at homosexual practice' and in the 1990s mused that one good thing from the Monica Lewinsky scandal might be 'that feminism will die, that sexual harassment laws will fizzle'. The memo adds: 'This hearing represents weaponized government oversight at its worst, with Chairwoman Marjorie Taylor Greene assembling hate group leaders, conspiracy theorists, and dark money operatives to attack civil society organizations while the very people crying about government waste have pocketed billions in federal contracts and subsidies.'

Capital improvement projects presented to the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors
WOODBURY COUNTY, Iowa (KCAU) — Multiple capital improvement projects came before the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors at their last meeting. The requests are for fiscal year 2026. Supervisors talked about how some of those projects can be paid off with funds from previous CIP Budgets that were not spent. County finance budget director Ryan Ericson says that would open up the possibility of having other requests on the upcoming fiscal year's list. 'With this new information about, we can backfill some of our prior year CIP money and use it to approve current CIPs. [This] does allow us to pass more as it creates more margin and cap space for us. And it's been great, our new budget and finance director, Ryan Ericson, has been very good at finding some of those savings and just clarifying what has been spent and unspent, which has been very useful to the board,' Bittinger said. The board decided to table the agenda item for next week's meeting to gather more information and get clarification on the exact costs of the projects. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
