Police condemn "hate-fueled acts and mob rule" in Northern Ireland unrest
London — Hundreds of masked demonstrators attacked officers during a second night of "rioting and disorder" in the Northern Ireland town of Ballymena on Tuesday, injuring 17 officers, according to police. The Northern Ireland police condemned the unrest on Wednesday, saying 32 officers had been injured in total since the disorder — reportedly an explosion of simmering racial tension — was sparked by an alleged sexual assault in the town. "The mindless violence witnessed over the past two nights in Ballymena is deeply concerning and utterly unacceptable," Chief Constable Jon Boutcher said in a statement. "Hate-fueled acts and mob rule do nothing but tear at the fabric of our society. They resolve nothing and serve no one." At least five people were arrested overnight, as four houses were damaged by fire and demonstrators smashed windows of homes and businesses, according to CBS News' partner network BBC News. "Police officers came under sustained attack over a number of hours with multiple petrol bombs, heavy masonry, bricks and fireworks in their direction," the Police Service of Northern Ireland said in a statement. The protests began just hours after two 14-year-old boys appeared in a court Monday over the alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl in the town. BBC News said the boys had communicated through a Romanian interpreter. Ballymena has a large immigrant population, according to AFP news agency. Residents described the violence as "terrifying" and told AFP that "foreigners" were being targeted. A Romanian resident in Ballymena told the Irish Times newspaper on Tuesday that she had put a British flag on her front window to avoid being targeted. Northern Ireland lawmaker Paul Frew told BBC Radio that he feared the violence could turn deadly, saying tension in the town had been rising for a while, and people were "frightened about illegal immigration." There has been no confirmed information about the immigration status of the teenagers who appeared in court on Monday. US seeks deal in London on China rare earth flows, says Trump's economic advisor
White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said China's exports of critical minerals have fallen short of what was previously agreed. PHOTO: REUTERS WASHINGTON – US negotiators will aim to restore the flow of critical minerals when they meet their Chinese counterparts for a new round of trade negotiations on June 9 in London, a top economic aide to President Donald Trump said. 'Those exports of critical minerals have been getting released at a rate that is, you know, higher than it was but not as high as we believe we agreed to in Geneva,' Mr Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council, said on June 8 during an interview on CBS News' Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan. Rare earth flows became a new flashpoint in the testy bilateral relations in recent weeks. Top US officials including Trade Representative Jamieson Greer accused Beijing of failing to comply with the elements of the trade agreement brokered in May in Geneva by slowing down and choking off critical minerals needed for cutting-edge electronics. Mr Trump on June 6 described talks with China as 'very far advanced' and said that Mr Xi Jinping agreed to speed shipments of the critical rare-earth minerals. China said on June 7 it approved some applications for rare earth exports but didn't elaborate on the products' applications or destinations. 'I'm very comfortable that this deal is about to be closed,' Mr Hassett told CBS, without elaborating on the exact terms to be negotiated by the two sides during the London talks. 'We want the rare earths, the magnets that are crucial for cellphones and everything else, to flow just as they did before the beginning of April,' he said. Family of Sarah Milgrim speaks out after D.C. Jewish museum shooting
The family of Sarah Milgrim, one of the two Israeli Embassy staffers who was shot and killed outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., last month, is remembering her as courageous, strong and striving for peace. Milgrim's parents, Robert and Nancy, and her older brother, Jacob, spoke to CBS News' Jonah Kaplan for their first network TV interview since the shooting about how they're processing their grief, Sarah's mission to promote peace in the Middle East and the rise in antisemitism in the United States. "Usually, a parent tries to mold their child. Sarah molded us," Robert Milgrim said. "She was a stronger person than I ever was." "I told Nancy after this happened that I'm a different person now than before this happened, from learning so much about what Sarah did and her courage and her striving for peace," he said. Wednesday marks two weeks since Milgrim and her boyfriend, Yaron Lischinsky, who also worked for the Israeli Embassy, were shot and killed as they left an event at the Capital Jewish Museum. Law enforcement officials described the attack as "targeted" and said the suspect shouted "Free Palestine" as he was being detained. He has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and other crimes. The interview with the Milgrim family airs Wednesday on "CBS Mornings" and "CBS Evening News."
