Parents cause teens to be anxious and depressed by making this one common mistake, experts warn

A new poll revealed that most U.S. parents are wary of letting their teenagers venture out on their own — despite it possibly being detrimental to their personal growth and development. The team at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor surveyed over 1,000 parents across the country with children ages 13 to 18, originally reported on by Science News. Advertisement The C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health found that fewer than half of parents would allow their teen to stay alone in a hotel room while they stepped out for breakfast. Even fewer — about one-third — would permit their teen to walk alone to a nearby coffee shop, and only one in five parents said they'd be comfortable with their teen exploring an amusement park or museum solo. This drop in autonomy comes alongside a worrying rise in mental health issues among teens, including anxiety and depression. While some researchers caution against drawing direct connections between the mental health crisis and parents' protectiveness, others are more certain of the correlation. 'It's absolutely no surprise to me that we are seeing these dramatic rises in anxiety, depression, even suicide among teenagers,' Boston College psychologist Peter Gray told Science News. Advertisement However, he noted there's still hope. 'If we reach some families and just approach this upcoming summer a little differently, I feel like that's a big win,' Gray said. Experts suggest that allowing your child to give input on where you vacation and setting rules allows parents and teens to set boundaries that both are comfortable with. Vacant teacher posts in primary, high schools a major issue in education sector in Yadgir
Vacant teacher posts in both primary and high schools are a major drawback for the education sector in Yadgir. The district has been facing a shortage of teachers for many years now in both government primary and high schools and the State government has to take immediate steps to fill vacant posts to improve results and remove the educationally backward district label attached to Yadgir. According to data provided by the Education Department for 2024-25, a total of 2,689 teacher posts are vacant in primary schools and 697 in high schools. The district has a total of 924 primary schools, of which 285 are in Shahapur, 348 in Surpur and 291 in Yadgir. There are 5,626 sanctioned posts, of which just 2,751 posts have been filled, while 2,683 remain vacant. The details of sanctioned posts, working posts and vacant posts in primary schools are as follows: 1,789 posts have been sanctioned for Shahapur, of which 858 are filled and 931 posts remain vacant. In Surpur, 2,097 posts are sanctioned, 953 posts filled and 1,144 posts are vacant. In Yadgir, 1,740 posts are sanctioned, 940 filled and 800 remain vacant. There are 141 high schools in the district. A total of 1,548 teacher posts are sanctioned, of which 852 posts are filled and 696 posts vacant. Of the 479 sanctioned posts for Shahapur, 262 posts have been filled and 217 posts remain vacant. In Surpur, 564 posts are sanctioned, 283 posts are filled and 281 posts remain vacant. In Yadgir, 505 posts are sanctioned, of which 307 posts are filled and 198 posts remain vacant. The district has been labelled the most backward in the education sector after no significant improvement was seen in SSLC results. 'Leaving teaching posts vacant at the primary level will automatically cause acute damage at the high school level. It is difficult to digest the district's poor performance every year,' Kannada activist Sharanu Gadduge said. The Education Department has now been forced to run classes with guest teachers. 'We have written to the department in detail about sanctioned, working and vacant teacher posts and requested it to take steps to recruit teachers. The government has to take the necessary steps,' Deputy Director of Public Instruction C.S. Mudhol told The Hindu.

These job cuts aim to expand the bank's capability to invest in priority areas, one of the people familiar with the matter stated. Barclays has been focused on gaining market share in European rates, equity derivatives and securitized product trading. During its investor update last year, the company stated that these efforts are anticipated to boost revenues by £500 million by IB, the company is aiming to grow its revenues from equity capital markets and mergers and acquisitions, with a specific focus on the health care, industrial, technology, and energy transition it is prioritizing growth in other areas, Barclays remains committed to its transatlantic IB model, despite ongoing investor pressure over the years.A Barclays spokesperson stated, 'Like other banks, we regularly assess our talent pool as part of our routine operations to ensure ongoing investment in key focus areas.' This move aligns with Barclays' ongoing efforts to improve efficiency through streamlining business operations and focusing on core April 2025, it announced a collaboration with Brookfield Asset Management Ltd. to transform its payment acceptance business. The cuts are meant to give the bank more capacity to invest in priority areas, one of the people said. In markets, the bank has been focused on boosting its market share in European rates, equity derivatives and securitized product trading. In investment banking, the firm has been looking bolster the revenue it generates from equity capital markets and mergers and acquisitions, in particular across the health care, industrial, tech and energy transition industry groups. The move is not a sign that the bank is retrenching away from any products or asset classes, the person added. Although it's prioritising growth elsewhere, Barclays has committed to its costly transatlantic investment banking model in the face of pressure from investors over the years. 'Like other banks, we regularly review our talent pool as part of our ongoing business operations to ensure continued investment in priority areas,' a Barclays spokesperson said in a statement. The lender made similar reductions just over a year ago. Mr Venkatakrishnan has been under pressure to boost returns across the investment bank, which consumes large amounts of capital compared with other, higher-returning parts of the business. He has said the division won't be allocated any additional risk-weighted assets from the parent company in the coming years, even as it navigates higher capital requirements from global regulators. The CEO set out a new strategy in 2024 that anticipated about £2 billion (S$3.5 billion) of efficiency savings across the bank by 2026, helping to boost earnings and return £10 billion to investors. Barclays' investment bank is by far its largest division, generating £11.8 billion in revenue in 2024, up 7 per cent from a year earlier. The bank is known as a powerhouse in fixed-income markets – though it's been investing heavily in its prime and equity divisions in recent years to catch up to rivals. The bank has seen its market share in investment banking inching upward after it had roles on deals including Alphabet.'s US$32 billion (S$41 billion) purchase of Wiz Inc. and Sunoco's acquisition of Parkland Corp. for about US$9.1 billion including debt. Within markets, revenue for the first three months of the year jumped 16 per cent as the firm's stock traders posted their best quarterly haul in almost three years. Investors seem to be happy with the bank's progress so far, with shares up about 24 per cent this year. That's better than the 8 per cent advance of the FTSE 100 index.
