Royal backing for Sedco's bumi scheme

Kota Kinabalu: Sedco's proposed two-phase Bumiputera Entrepreneurship Program received royal endorsement from the Agong's sister, Tunku Mariamz Al-Marhum Al-Mutawakkil Alallah Sultan Iskandar Al-Haj. Tunku Mariamz emphasised the importance of training and mentorship that are not only effective but time-efficient, in order to make a tangible difference in the lives of aspiring bumiputera entrepreneurs.
Advertisement 'We must not simply invite investors; we must also ensure the actual investment reaches the people,' she said, during a visit to the Sabah Economic Development Corporation Hq at Wisma Sedco, Thursday. She stressed the need for a more inclusive economic framework that benefits the local community. The program to be launched next month aims to support the growth of local businesses by offering targeted skills development, mentorship and resources designed to scale up entrepreneurship in Sabah. Tunku Mariamz also highlighted the transformative potential of digital commerce and online platforms, encouraging Sabah's entrepreneurs to tap into global trade opportunities.
Advertisement She was briefed on Sedco's extensive and diverse business ecosystem, underscoring the corporation's critical role in Sabah's socio-economic development across sectors such as mining, construction, real estate, hospitality, tourism, and entrepreneurship. The engagement saw a productive dialogue, and a shared vision for the continued advancement of the state, particularly in fostering opportunities for the Bumiputera community. She expressed her heartfelt congratulations to Datuk Ar. James Wong Kein Peng, the newly appointed Group General Manager of Sedco. Present were key members of the Sedco Group Top Management and CEOs, including Rahim Mohd Zain, General Manager of Sedcovest Holdings Sdn Bhd; Mat Saidi Minting, General Manager of Perkasa Realty Sdn Bhd; Shiu Vay Leung, General Manager of Sedco Precast Sdn Bhd and Shamsul Bahri Johari, General Manager of Sedco Mining Sdn Bhd. Passionate about Sabah's environmental preservation, she warned about the dangers of unsustainable development practices. She also highlighted growing concerns of plastic pollution, wildlife endangerment, and the need for cleaner, more responsible tourism practices. She shared her personal experiences hiking Mount Kinabalu, noting that Sabah's natural wonders and cultural heritage should be promoted more vigorously through film and digital storytelling. Her vision for Sabah included a sustainable approach to tourism that not only attracts visitors but also ensures the long-term health of its ecosystems and communities. 'We must protect our environment for future generations,' she said, stressing the importance of preserving both the state's rich ethnic diversity and its natural beauty. Tunku Mariamz said Sabah Maju Jaya should not be just a slogan. 'Unity and sincerity must come first. Put political differences and personal interests aside, and focus on doing what's best for the betterment of the State.' Progress can only be achieved when all stakeholders collaborate with genuine intent and a focus on service to the people.
