Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors With the news that Ryan Kiera Armstrong of "Skeleton Crew" fame will be the new Slayer joining Sarah Michelle Gellar in her continuing adventures in the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" sequel series, the continuation of the Buffyverse feels closer than ever. Read More: 'Buffy' Reboot Casts 'Star Wars' Actress as New Slayer Since it's a sure bet the new "Buffy" series will include a guest appearance or two from alum of the original series, we thought it would be fun to cast our votes for the characters whose returns are absolutely essential. Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy the Vampire Slayer. 20th Century Studios 5. Faith (Eliza Dushku) While she was a villain, Faith was one of Buffy's fiercest enemies, but with her redemption in Season 7 of the original "Buffy" series, she would make an even more satisfying guest appearance as an ally. Presumably, Buffy's going to be something of a mentor to Armstrong's younger Slayer, and an episode or two where Faith returns to teach her an alternate, less "academic" approach to slaying would be interesting. 4. Angel (David Boreanaz) There are going to be some obvious difficulties in bringing back any characters who played vampires - how can they play characters blessed with eternal youth when the actors are decades older? But the doomed romance between Buffy and Angel was at the very heart of the original series. Not to feature at least a cameo from the guy feels criminal. 3. Spike (James Marsters) Spike sacrifices himself in the original "Buffy" series finale, but thankfully, he's brought back in the fifth and final season of the spinoff "Angel". It might be a stretch to say that Spike and Buffy have any kind of unfinished business and it would likely be a good idea to leave any kind of romance between them in the past. But still, few characters in "Buffy" were as charismatic or beloved as Spike, and like Angel he deserves at least a cameo or two. 2. Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) As Buffy is trying to teach the new Slayer the ropes, she's going to find herself challenged, and who better to both give Buffy some tips and to perhaps enjoy watching her fall into familiar pitfalls than the librarian who suffered so many concussions as Buffy's Watcher? 1. Willow (Alyson Hannigan) Perhaps no one needs to have a guest appearance in the new series than Alyson Hannigan as Buffy's best friend Willow. Their friendship was the glue that kept the Scoobs together, and we know if Willow could help Buffy with anything to do with the new challenges she's facing, the powerful witch would be there in a second. Sarah Michelle Gellar Returns As Buffy, Welcomes New Slayer Ryan Kiera Armstrong

Last Updated: Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Buffy Summers in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, has revealed who will be playing the new-generation slayer in the reboot series. Ryan Kiera Armstrong has officially joined the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot as the 'chosen one." The 15-year-old actor will portray a new-generation slayer—seen as the spiritual successor to Buffy Summers—in the upcoming series, which marks a fresh chapter in the Buffyverse. The new Buffy series, which has received a pilot order at Disney's Hulu, remains untitled for now. According to Deadline, Armstrong's character is described as an introverted high school student—hinting at a fresh and grounded take on the next slayer's journey. Gellar told Armstrong how the team knew there was no one who could play the role better, right when they saw her audition tape. She further said she was excited to have the young actor as her 'partner on this journey". Armstrong, struggling to contain her happiness, acknowledged how 'honored" she was feeling for landing the role. Her father, Canadian actor-producer Dean Armstrong, also showed up at the scene to rejoice over the feat. Among Armstrong's notable works is her starring role on 'Star Wars: Skeleton Crew'. She also played the role of Amanda Seyfried's daughter in the 2019 comedy-romance drama The Art of Racing in the Rain. It was her breakout role. She was just an eight-year-old back then. Armstrong also delivered an impressive performance in her lead role in Firestarter. Her TV debut was with a key recurring role on 'Anne with an E'. Coming back to the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, the pilot for the project has Oscar-winning winner Chloe Zhao as the director. First Published:

'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' casts Ryan Kiera Armstrong as the new chosen one

As we're told in the opening credits of the early Buffy episodes, in every generation there's a chosen one. The reboot has officially found theirs. Ryan Kiera Armstrong will star opposite Sarah Michelle Gellar in the untitled Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, which has a pilot order at Hulu, according to Deadline. The 15-year-old actress, whose credits include Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Firestarter and American Horror Story, first learned she landed the part from the original vampire slayer herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar. 'I know this process has been hard, and there's been so many parts with me being out of the country. There was just sort of one part of it that I just wanted to ask you, and I wanted to make sure that you were OK with,' Gellar told Armstrong in a recorded Zoom call shared to Instagram. 'How do you feel about helping me save the world? You want to be my chosen one?' Gellar shared the heartfelt footage on Instagram on Thursday, introducing Armstrong to her followers and fans of the original series. The Buffy alum, who most recently appeared on Dexter: Original Sin, will also be executive producing the reboot. 'From the moment I saw Ryan's audition, I knew there was only one girl I wanted by my side,' she wrote. 'To have that kind of emotional intelligence, and talent, at such a young age is truly a gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room. Welcome to #NewSunnydale.' Sunnydale, for those unfamiliar, is the name of the fictional California city in which the original series takes place. Armstrong, in an Instagram post of her own, shared her excitement in boarding the project and joining the 'Buffyverse.' 'I'm so beyond thankful and excited to share that I am going to be apart of the BTVS universe!!! I am so excited for this journey with you @sarahmgellar I am in awe of you,' she wrote on Thursday. News of Armstrong's casting comes days after Gellar and her Buffy the Vampire Slayer costar Alyson Hannigan reunited to discuss the importance of meningitis vaccinations for teenagers. While Hannigan has yet to confirm whether she'll be part of the show's reboot, fans believe she may be leaving hints of her involvement. The actress, who played Buffy's best friend, Willow Rosenberg, on the show, captioned a recent Instagram post 'Suiting up to talk all things Sunnydale.' 'I hope that it brings comfort,' Gellar told SiriusXM Hits 1's The Morning Mash Up about the reboot. 'Buffy is still hitting people who are watching it for the first time, and they're seeing themselves, and they're seeing their friends, and they're finding their chosen family. And I think more than ever right now, as we get more and more divided, we need that chosen family, so I hope to provide a new chosen family.' The untitled Buffy pilot was first revealed to be in the works in February. Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao is attached to direct the pilot, while Nora Zuckerman and Lilla Zuckerman are set to write, showrun and executive produce the series. Original Buffy executive producers Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui and Dolly Parton will also executive produce the reboot alongside Gellar. Buffy the Vampire Slayer ran for seven seasons, from 1997 to 2003, and spawned a spin-off series, Angel, which aired from 1999 to 2004. Gellar began playing the titular vampire slayer at just 19 years old. In 2001, she earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Drama for her starring role. Gellar told People in March that the reboot is moving along faster than she expected. 'We've set up our offices, which means things are progressing probably faster than I'd anticipated,' she said, adding that she thinks it's still going to take some time to bring it all together. 'To do it the way it needs to be done, everyone has to be patient with all of us, because this isn't something that [will just happen].'
