Wood on fire in sizzling Darwin Supercars practice
Ryan Wood has scorched the Supercars field to set the fastest time in the first practice session in Darwin. The Walkinshaw Andretti United youngster outpaced nearest challenger Broc Feeney by more than two-tenths of a second in the Top End dry-season heat on Friday. Wood set the best lap of one minute and 7.059 seconds, with championship-leader Feeney 0.265 seconds behind and Triple Eight teammate Will Brown another hundredth of a second behind him in third. Drivers tested the limits of Hidden Valley's challenging 2.9km circuit, with several racers overshooting the long, loopy left-hander at turn one. A patch of parched grass at the end of the turn was set alight after Brown ran his Camaro off towards the end of the session. Feeney was the first driver to run off on the first turn at the end of the 1.1km straight, but recovered to set a speedy lap time that had him at the top of the totem for most of the session. The 22-year-old won the last two races in Perth and showed promising pace as he looks to extend his 72-point gap at the top of the leaderboard at the track he won two races at last year. Teenage wildcard entrant Rylan Gray, Matt Stone Racing veteran Nick Percat and Tickford's Cam Waters also took excursions off the track on turn one, while Andre Heimgartner battled to hold onto control of his lively Camaro on several occasions. Drivers will return for the final practice session at 2.55pm (ACST) on Friday, ahead of Saturday's back-to-back qualifying sessions. Two 120km races will follow qualifying on Saturday, before the final 200km race of the weekend on Sunday.

Why James Courtney cried after Supercars podium finish
James Courtney has already won a Supercars championship, but it was his third-place finish in Perth that brought him to tears. The 2010 champion finally ended his two-year podium drought with a spirited drive in the final sprint race at Wanneroo Raceway on Sunday. After qualifying 13th, the 44-year-old had found himself in a position to vie for the podium when Erebus rookie Cooper Murray brought out the yellow flag in the final 20 laps of the 200km race. Murray's Chevrolet Camaro had come to a sudden halt after a mechanical failure. Courtney showed his experience in the Blanchard Racing Team car and overtook in-form drivers Cam Waters and Ryan Wood to follow second-placed Matt Payne to the podium. Championship leader Broc Feeney took back-to-back victories, but his feat was largely overshadowed by fan favourite Courtney's first podium since 2023 - claimed at the same racetrack. Well aware it's been a long time between drinks, Courtney says his podium finish is made even more special after 'head-scratching and soul-searching' following dismal bottom-five results in New Zealand. He gifted Blanchard Racing their first podium result since the team's entry in 2021. Courtney wasn't the only driver to break through for a milestone, with second-year racer Wood claiming his first career win earlier in the weekend. 'I couldn't have been prouder of everyone. I got so emotional,' Courtney said. 'I felt like I probably looked like Woody with his first win, but it was me crying for a third. 'It's been pretty dark without the lights on for a while, but we've managed to get the headlights back up and heading in the right direction. 'It's like being an alcoholic. You have to admit that, yeah, you've got a problem before you can fix it.' Team principal Tim Blanchard was just as relieved. 'The last 12 months since going to two cars has been a real struggle,' Blanchard said. 'We've had some really challenging times. At times, we question why we're doing this. 'James kept making me come back.' Confident his best hasn't left him yet, Courtney is bent on finishing his final full-time season on a high. The western Sydney product is set for life as a real estate agent after calling time on his career last year. He made his debut in 2005 for Holden Racing Team as a co-driver before joining full-time the following season for Stone Brothers Racing Courtney hasn't ruled out returning to co-driving. 'Might just mic drop it and never be seen again,' Courtney joked. 'To be able to hopefully finish on a high and walk away from it when you're competitive, I don't want to be that guy where everyone's quietly saying, 'You need to pack it in'. 'I can pretty comfortably take off my hat at the end of this, happy with what I've done, and don't feel that I haven't achieved or need to do anything more.' Supercars heads to Darwin next from June 20 to 22, with Feeney holding a 72-point lead over reigning champion Will Brown.

Broc Feeney turns the table on rivals to win the Perth Super 440 to extend his championship lead
Australia's Broc Feeney turned the tables on his young New Zealand title rival Matt Payne to win Sunday's feature race at the Perth Super 440 and extend his lead in the 2025 Supercars championship. Four weeks after Payne held off Feeney in a drag finish to the chequered flag to win at Symmons Plains in Tasmania, the pair traded places after an incredible finish to the 200km main race at Wanneroo Raceway. This time, the 22-year-old Feeney got his Chevrolet Camaro across the line first by half a second to remain on track to become the second youngest driver to win the Supercars title. There's still a long way to go, of course, and with a new format in place this season, no-one is taking anything for granted but so far, Feeney has established himself as the one to beat. 'I just executed the start and just sort of managed the race in those first two stints,' Feeney told Fox Sports. 'It was probably going to be pretty smooth sailing home (but) with the pit stops and the safety car and Matt was super quick at the end there. 'I was a bit worried in the sprint shoot out at the end. He got one off on me last one so it's good to get one back on him this time.' Following on from his victory in Saturday's second 120km sprint, Feeney has already won five races this season to stretch his lead in the championship standings to 72 points over his Red Bull Ampol Racing teammate Will Brown. Payne, a 22-year-old rising Kiwi star, is currently in third spot, 123 behind Feeney. Starting from pole position, Feeney made a brilliant launch when the lights went out to take immediate control of the 16th race of the season. The only times he relinquished the lead in the 83-lap event was when he made his two mandatory pit stops but the introduction of a safety car, when Cooper Murray came to a halt because of a mechanical problem, set the stage for a nail biting 14-lap sprint to the end. The lead that Feeney had built up was instantly wiped away as the field came together for the hectic dash to the finish, but he held his nerve to seal the win and celebrate in style. 'I didn't have much left in the end. My rears were pretty cooked,' Feeney said. 'I finally did a good burnout, so hopefully it was all right for the crowd. I was practising with the (NRL) Bulldogs earlier this week, doing burnouts on grass, so it was good to finally let one rip.' Payne got a lucky break when the race was yellow flagged because it enabled him to make a cheap pit stop and jump to second spot. 'I'd never given up, absolutely not. When I saw the car that was stopped down at turn six, I thought, oh my God, we've actually got a real chance. And then I came out and I was behind Broc and I thought no way we're in second,' Payne said. 'I had already accepted 11th or 12th place was going to be where we were going to finish so it's tricky, very tricky but very, very lucky. 'I just wanted to keep pounding Broc there at the end. I was trying everything I could. but we just didn't quite have the car underneath us. 'We stayed close, but we fought right to the end, but I'm just really happy to be standing on the podium.' A tearful James Courtney also benefited from the safety car to finish third and secure his first podium in two years. 'I'm not going to lie, I did cry on the in-lap,' Courtney said. 'It's been a tough 18 months for these guys putting in so much work and to be able to finally repay them with the results has been amazing.'

Flawless Feeney too fast with Perth back-to-back wins
Supercars championship leader Broc Feeney will leave Perth with a pair of victories after a near-flawless display in the final sprint race. Triple Eight ace Feeney survived late drama as he led from start to finish across the 83-lap, 200km race at Wanneroo Raceway on Sunday. It was the 22-year-old's fifth win of the season, adding to his haul of six poles and eight podiums. A safety car with 20 laps remaining threatened to cause chaos for Feeney. The first yellow flag of the weekend was brought out when Erebus rookie Cooper Murray came to a halt on the way to turn six after a suspected mechanical failure. It set up a re-staging of Feeney's showdown with Matt Payne in Tasmania, where the Grove Racing driver won by just 0.0550 seconds. Feeney was unwilling to lose to Payne again and he flaunted blistering pace to win by 0.5671 seconds. "To have the race like we did there, it was pretty - I shouldn't say smooth sailing - but a lot less stressful than it was at the end of the race," Feeney said. Triple Eight team principal Jamie Whincup couldn't say the same. "I was having deja vu, it's going to happen again," Whincup said. "I was just out front yelling ... I was having nightmares." James Courtney was the biggest beneficiary of the yellow flag, crossing the line third after qualifying 13th. It was a surprise podium for one-time Supercars champion Courtney, whose best result this year in the Blanchard Racing Team car was ninth in Tasmania. It is also Blanchard Racing's maiden podium since the team's entry in 2021. "I got so emotional," Courtney said. "It was me crying for a third." Tickford star Cam Waters was unlucky to finish fourth after starting in the first row with Feeney. Ryan Wood, after breaking through for an emotional maiden Supercars win the day before, had been as high as second before being ruled out of the race after a tangle with James Golding. PremiAir Nulon Racing's Golding had run wide at turn one with eight laps to go, allowing Wood to move into fifth. But Golding was determined to regain his spot and ended up running both cars off when they collided side-on. Golding, who finished 22nd, was slapped with a drive-through penalty for the incident. Golding had been fourth and assertively defending his position when the nose of Brown's Triple Eight car hit his right rear and sent him wide at turn seven. Meanwhile, Wood's teammate Chaz Mostert was sixth after qualifying in 14th. Local product Brodie Kostecki was 11th after his hopes of a home victory were dashed when a poor qualifying effort condemned him to 15th. Cam Hill, after qualifying seventh, endured a nightmare start when his Matt Stone Racing car stalled at lights out. Suffering a battery issue, his car had to be towed back to pit lane. Broc Feeney takes second victory from Supercars Wanneroo round
Broc Feeney has taken a dominant win in the third and final Supercars race at Wanneroo Raceway near Perth, in Western Australia. The Triple Eight Chevrolet driver took pole position by an emphatic 0.20s, sprinted away on the opening lap and, after a late-race scare, went on to take a narrow 0.5671s victory over the 83-lap journey on the Soft Dunlop control tyre. Advertisement Second place was a reward for Matt Payne, who started fourth and ran in touch with the leaders until his first pitstop, when a fuel-flow problem delayed him. But Payne was saved by a late-race safety car, allowing him to pit under yellow, vault up through the order and chase Feeney all the way to the flag. If second came as a surprise to anyone watching mid-race, third place was a complete shock. James Courtney started 13th in the Blanchard Racing Team Ford and stayed in the mid-pack for the opening part of the race. But when the safety car appeared, he followed Payne into the pitlane and vaulted all the way up to fourth, which became third when he picked off Ryan Wood (Walkinshaw Andretti United). 'The key was the start,' Feeney said. 'To manage the pace in those two stints, it was a matter of getting it home. The car has been awesome and the pitstops this weekend have been second to none.' Payne was on a fuel-saving mission after not enough fuel went into the Grove Racing Ford at his opening pitstop. 'It's really hard to fuel save that much,' he admitted. 'I couldn't believe it when I saw the car stopped at Turn 6. I came out behind Broc and thought, no way am I second! I had already accepted that that was where we were going to finish.' 'It's been a tough 18 months for these guys, who have put in so much work,' he said, after his 45th Supercars race in Perth. 'Qualifying was tough for us. I was crying in the car like a little kid. There was a bit of hustle at the restart, and I managed to gap those guys [behind].' Cam Waters took fourth place in the Tickford Racing Mustang after being in the wars mid-race, and Will Brown gained ground late in the race to take fifth place, in spite of dealing with a fuel pressure problem. His cause was aided when James Golding (PremiAir Racing Chevrolet) carted Wood off the road at Turn 4. Up to that point Wood had driven a heady race, moving from seventh on the grid to fourth in the opening 10 laps and finding a way past Waters on lap 41. As a result Feeney has extended his championship points lead over Brown, 1181-1109. Payne maintains third place on 1058 ahead of Waters (1028) and Mostert (877). Tickford Racing's Thomas Randle is sixth on 773. The Supercars drivers and teams will return to the track in two weeks, at Hidden Valley near Darwin, for the second of the series' four winter rounds, on 20-22 June.
