Brian Windhorst warns rest of NBA after sale of Lakers

No one can say with any certainty how much success the Los Angeles Lakers will have in the coming years now that a majority share of the franchise will be sold by the Buss family to Mark Walter. Walter, the CEO of Guggenheim Partners, has been the primary owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since 2012, and under his leadership, the Dodgers have consistently enjoyed a high level of success that includes 11 National League West titles and two World Series championships. If nothing else, it is projected that the Lakers will not spare any expenses when going after the best men and women to fill numerous roles within the organization. For years, they have been criticized for being run like a mom-and-pop small business that has consistently pinched pennies. That approach has worked against them, most notably when super sub and fan favorite Alex Caruso left in free agency in 2021 and Tyronn Lue turned down their offer to be their head coach in 2019. Advertisement NBA reporter Brian Windhorst said that this new ownership is good news for the Lakers — and bad news for the rest of the league. "If I were another team, I would not think this is a great development," Windhorst said. "I think the Lakers are only gonna get more dangerous as an organization with the more resources that are theoretically here about to be poured into it." Historically, the Lakers have been a big draw for some of basketball's greatest titans, including Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, and they have always seemingly been able to trade for a Hall of Famer just when it has seemed that they were down and out. But now, presumably at least, money will not be an issue when looking to upgrade the roster or the rest of the organization. How exactly this apparent influx of capital will translate to personnel moves remains to be seen, but one has to reasonably expect a positive development in that regard. Report: Nets unable to trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo as he stays put

The Brooklyn Nets are in the middle of a 2025 NBA offseason in which the team can undergo a number of strategies as they look to build up the roster for the 2025-26 season. Brooklyn has reportedly been hoping that Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo would request a trade out of Milwaukee, but it seems like that dream will have to be put on hold for now. "Right now, there is no Giannis Antetokounmpo trade market, there is no Giannis Antetokounmpo trade discussions. He has not asked for it. The Bucks are not looking to trade him," ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported on Tuesday during his appearance on "Get Up." Ever since the Milwaukee Bucks lost in the first round of the NBA playoffs in April, the talk of the league has been the future of Antetokounmpo and the Bucks. Advertisement ESPN's Shams Charania reported in May that Antetokounmpo was open-minded about his future for the first time in the 12 years that he has been with the Bucks. Along those lines, Brian Lewis of the New York Post has continually reported on the fact that Brooklyn has maintained interest in Antetokounmpo if he were ever to become available, especially this summer when they have plenty of assets to work with. Heading into the 2025 NBA Draft in June, the Nets have five picks to use, including four picks in the first round and they have the most cap space in the league to be able to take on more salary for someone like Antetokounmpo, for example. However, now that Antetokounmpo is staying put in Milwaukee, at least for the time being, Brooklyn has no choice but to pivot to another player or continue the rebuild as it has been thus far. Many have argued that the Nets should stay the course with their rebuild as opposed to going all-in for someone like Antetokounmpo when the roster still needs more to be able to compete for a championship. With the latest news from Windhorst, it seems that the Nets could focus more of its attention on trying to maximize this upcoming draft, including maneuvers like acquiring a second Lottery pick or moving up in said draft. How do the Nets pivot with Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo staying put?

The Brooklyn Nets have plenty to think about this offseason as the 2025 NBA Draft is less than one week away with free-agency probably beginning shortly afterwards. Brooklyn has five picks in the upcoming Draft, but they also lead the league in cap space so it's interesting to ponder how they could navigate this offseason amidst all of the moves. ESPN's Brian Windhorst recently said on Get Up that "There's not going to be a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade in the short-term future" as he spoke on what could happen this summer with Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant and Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. Brooklyn reportedly has been interested in trading for Antetokounmpo for some time now, but it seems that he is off the table at the moment. Advertisement "The league has come to terms with the realization that the Bucks are going to keep him and Giannis is not going to ask for a trade. I can't speak to what might happen in August," Windhorst continued. To Windhorst's point, while Antetokounmpo appeared to be available earlier this offseason after ESPN's Shams Charania's reporting, that doesn't look to be the case now. For the Nets, they could take the patient approach of waiting to see what happens closer to training camp, but by then, they will have already gone through the Draft and free-agency. With Brooklyn's league-leading cap space, they can choose to go after restricted free-agents like Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga or Chicago Bulls guard Josh Giddey. If the Nets are willing to go after players that could be available for a trade, there are players like Houston Rockets forward Jabari Smith Jr., Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen, and Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball as guys whose names have appeared in trade rumors. Either way, with the news that Antetokounmpo is staying in Milwaukee as of now, Brooklyn will have to pivot in some way and there are a myriad of ways to do so. NBA insider pours cold water on Lakers trading for Jaren Jackson Jr.

NBA insider pours cold water on Lakers trading for Jaren Jackson Jr. On Sunday, the Orlando Magic landed Desmond Bane, a rising shooting guard, from the Memphis Grizzlies for four future first-round draft picks, guard Cole Anthony and former Los Angeles Lakers guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. While Bane, who averaged 19.2 points a game this season, has the ability to lift the offensively inept Magic a notch, plenty feel they gave up too much for a man who has never made the All-Star team. This big trade has also made people wonder if Memphis, which has been struggling to take the next step itself and become a contender, could make another big move soon. Some are questioning whether big man Jaren Jackson Jr., a two-time All-Star who has one year left on his current contract, could be the next player to be moved. Lakers fans are hoping that he gets moved to the Purple and Gold. But ESPN's Brian Windhorst gave them a reality check by saying on "Get Up" that such a trade won't happen. "No chance," ESPN's Brian Windhorst claimed Monday. "No chance. It's absolutely not worth a discussion. And look, I think that Jaren Jackson -- he's now in position to sign a contract extension of over $200 million. I would feel like that's very strongly going to happen." When one takes a step back, one has to question why Memphis would prefer to trade Jackson rather than give him an extension. He's now its second-best player, and he put up 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.2 steals a game while making 37.5% of his 3-point attempts this season. At age 25, he could run alongside star guard Ja Morant for years to come. But if he does become available, there's no doubt he would be the type of ideal center target the Lakers want and need. He could give them inside scoring from the low post in addition to his shot-blocking, rebounding and 3-point shooting, and he's athletic enough to give their transition game a much-needed shot in the arm while converting on lob passes from Luka Doncic.
