Pochettino's problems mount as US routed 4-0 by Switzerland
US head coach Mauricio Pochettino said he bore responsibility for picking the inexperienced line-up that was outclassed by the rampant Swiss. (AP Pic) TENNESSEE : An experimental US line-up crashed to a 4-0 friendly home defeat to Switzerland on Tuesday, deepening the gloom around Mauricio Pochettino's squad one year out from hosting the World Cup. A game intended as a morale-boosting send-off before the USA take part in the Concacaf Gold Cup unravelled in a disastrous first half that saw Switzerland 4-0 up after 36 minutes in Nashville. Dan Ndoye, Michel Aebischer, Breel Embolo and Johan Manzambi scored for Switzerland to leave a disgruntled home crowd at Geodis Park in Nashville raining boos down from the stands. The defeat was the fourth straight loss suffered by Pochettino's side, the first time the US has lost four in a row since 2007. Pochettino is planning for the USA's Gold Cup campaign, which kicks off on Sunday against Trinidad and Tobago, without several key players who are unavailable. AC Milan star Christian Pulisic was excused from duty from the tournament after requesting a rest while Juventus duo Weston McKennie and Tim Weah are unavailable due to the Italian side's participation in the FIFA Club World Cup. Those absences left former Chelsea and Tottenham coach Pochettino having to dig deep to gauge the depth of his resources as the US builds towards next year's World Cup finals in the United States, Canada and Mexico. On Tuesday's evidence, the return of his European-based stars cannot come soon enough after Switzerland ran riot in a lopsided first half. Pochettino said he bore responsibility for picking the inexperienced line-up that were outclassed by the rampant Swiss. 'First of all it's my responsibility the choice of the starting 11. I wanted to give minutes to certain players, but we were never in the game,' the Argentine said. US defender Walker Zimmerman attempted to put a brave face on the mauling, insisting there was still plenty of time for the side to improve before next year's World Cup. 'It's easy to look at one half and think this is all going to pieces, that we can't come back from a result like this,' Zimmerman told TNT television. 'But look at the build-up to 2022 – we took down Morocco 3-0 and they made the semi-final. Things change. That was six months apart.' 'So it's not the end of the world. We accept that it's not good enough and we realise that. That's where the disappointment comes in, but we have to flip the script and we've gotta make sure we do not come out like that ever again.'

(AP Photo/George Walker IV) NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The United States gave up four goals in the first half and looked unprepared for next year's World Cup, getting routed by Switzerland 4-0 in a friendly on Tuesday night as the Americans lost their fourth straight game for the first time since 2007. Dan Ndoye scored in the 13th minute, Michel Aebischer in the 23rd, Breel Embolo in the 33rd and Johan Manzambi in the 36th. The Americans have lost four consecutive home games for the third time and first since 1988. Advertisement Switzerland won its third straight match and extended the U.S. winless streak against European opponents to eight games since 2021. Fans at Geodis Park booed loudly as the U.S. gave up four goals by the 40th minute for the first time since Nov. 9, 1980, at Mexico and the first time ever at home, according to Opta. The match was played one year and one day before the 2026 World Cup co-hosted by the U.S. starts. Going into their CONCACAF Gold Cup opener against Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday, the Americans are 5-5 under Mauricio Pochettino, who took over after first-round elimination last year's Copa America led the U.S. Soccer Federation to fire coach Gregg Berhalter. Ndoye burst behind Nate Harriel to run onto a through pass for the first goal; Manzambi dribbled past Max Arfsten along the endline to leave Aebischer with a tap-in for the second; goalkeeper Matt Turner spilled Ricardo Rodriguez's shot to leave Embolo an open net for the third; and a mix-up when Quinn Sullivan passed to Sebastian Berhalter as the former coach's son slipped created a giveaway that led to Manzambi's first international goal. The U.S. had not lost four straight games since a five-game skid in 2007. The Americans were missing Christian Pulisic (wanted time off); Yunus Musah (personal reason not disclosed); Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Gio Reyna (headed to the Club World Cup); Antonee Robinson, Tyler Adams and Folarin Balogun (injured); and Sergiño Dest (regaining fitness). Advertisement Turner played his first game for club or country since March 23. Berhalter started in his debut, and Brenden and Paxten Aaronson became the fourth set of brothers to start for the U.S., and the first since George and Louis Nanchoff in 1979. Pochettino made nine changes from Saturday's 2-1 loss to Turkey, keeping only Arfsten and midfielder Johnny Cardoso. The U.S. made five changes to start the second half and Damian Downs made his debut in the 75th minute. ___ AP soccer:

How to watch USMNT vs Switzerland live: Stream link, TV channel, team news, prediction
Mauricio Pochettino is feeling the heat a little as the USMNT host Switzerland on Tuesday in what is a crucial friendly just a year out from the 2026 World Cup on home soil. MORE — Which teams have qualified for the 2026 World Cup? Advertisement Following on from the Nations League debacle in March the USMNT has now lost three-straight games, as a young and inexperienced side lost 2-1 to Turkiye in East Hartford, Connecticut on Saturday. Pochettino gave plenty of youngsters a chance to impress, and some like Jack McGlynn did, but he's missing several key players this summer for various reasons and there is real concern among the USMNT fanbase about where the team is heading. This friendly against Switzerland will give the USMNT a very good idea of how things are shaping up ahead of the Gold Cup this summer, and just 12 months before the 2026 World Cup where they are expected to flourish in front of their home fans. Switzerland beat Mexico 4-2 in a friendly in Salt Lake City, Utah on Saturday with Murat Yakin's team looking as solid as ever. In Breel Embolo, Granit Xhaka, Yann Sommer and Manuel Akanji they have an experienced core and their run to the quarterfinals of the European championships last summer proved their quality. In many ways the USMNT should aim to replicate what Switzerland have created. Being tough to beat and relying on a solid, defensive base and then allowing talented attackers to flourish on the counter. How to watch USMNT vs Switzerland live, stream link and start time Kick off time: 8pm ET Tuesday (June 10) Venue: GEODIS Park — Nashville, Tennessee Streaming, TV channel: Peacock en Espanol USMNT team news, focus We should see Tyler Adams, Tim Ream, Matt Turner, Haji Wright and Brenden Aaronson all start as Pochettino rotates his lineup. The likes of McGlynn, Diego Luna and Malik Tillman impressed against Turkiye, but defensively the USMNT need to improve as they can't keep making sloppy mistakes at the back. Mark McKenzie could come in to start at center back, while Johnny Cardoso could be rested after a long season for Real Betis and ahead of his pending move to Atletico Madrid. Advertisement OUT: Christian Pulisic (requested), Yunus Musah (requested), Antonee Robinson (knee), Weston McKennie (Club World Cup duty), Tim Weah (Club World Cup duty), Zach Steffen (knee), DeJuan Jones (muscle), Sergino Dest (fitness) Switzerland team news, focus The Swiss will likely roll out Xhaka, Embolo and Akanji to start once again, while Bologna trio Dan Ndoye, Remo Freuler and Michel Aebischer are all players to keep a close eye on. Fabian Rieder is a rising star. USMNT vs Switzerland prediction This feels like the USMNT will have plenty of problems at the back again and Switzerland showed how clinical they could be against Mexico over the weekend. Expect another defeat for Pochettino's understrength side. USMNT 1-3 Switzerland.

Monaco unlikely to extend Breel Embolo's contract
Breel Embolo's (28) long-term future at AS Monaco has been uncertain for some time. The Swiss striker is clearly happy at the Principality club, however, his deal with Les Monégasques expires at the end of next season. There was little clarity provided by Monaco CEO Thiago Scuro during an interview attended by Get French Football News. 'Let's see what happens this summer […] he still has a contract. He could extend or he could leave,' said Scuro, leaving both possibilities very much open. Advertisement Earlier in the season, Embolo expressed a desire to extend at Monaco, and he has since struck up a fine partnership with new striker Mika Biereth, both on and off the pitch. However, Nice-Matin understands that Monaco will not look to renew the Swiss striker's deal, which expires at the end of next season. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that Embolo will leave this summer, as the publication points out. He remains happy at the club and therefore could stay for next season. GFFN | Luke Entwistle

Marseille and Monaco secure Champions League berths with top-three Ligue 1 spots
Monaco's Swiss forward Breel Embolo celebrates at the end of the French Ligue 1 match against Olympique Lyonnais in Monaco on May 10, 2025. PHOTO: AFP Marseille's supporters cheer and light flares ahead of their French Ligue 1 away match against Le Havre on May 10, 2025. PHOTO: AFP PARIS - Olympique de Marseille survived a mid-match interruption due to crowd trouble to secure their place in next season's Champions League with a 3-1 Ligue 1 win at Le Havre, while Monaco made sure of a top three finish with a 2-0 victory over Olympique Lyonnais. Second half goals from Takumi Minamino and Denis Zakaria sealed Monaco a place in Europe's top club competition, where they will join Ligue 1 champions Paris St Germain and Marseille. Marseille led at Le Havre through Amine Gouiri's 53rd minute score but saw Issa Soumare equalise after a 15-minute interruption in the second half when the referee took the teams into the changing rooms in response to trouble in the stands. But Mason Greenwood struck his 19th league goal of the season in the 86th minute to put them back ahead and Gouiri added the third deep in stoppage time to leave Le Havre facing the possibility of relegation next Saturday when all nine fixtures will kick off simultaneously. Marseille moved up to 62 points while Monaco are on 61. The other French places in European club competitions will be decided on the final day of the season next weekend. Fourth place in Ligue 1, which guarantees a place in the Champions League preliminary rounds next season, is still up for grabs with Nice, Lille and Strasbourg all on 57 points after they all lost on the road. PSG rested almost all of the team that earlier this week secured a place in the Champions League final but still turned out comfortable 4-1 winners at Montpellier. PSG had already retained the title last month and with both the Coupe de France final and the Champions League decider against Inter Milan later this month, coach Luis Enrique elected to field a second-string side, keeping only two starters from Wednesday's semi-final success over Arsenal. They still proved too strong, however, for already-relegated Montpellier with Goncalo Ramos netting three, one from the penalty spot, after teenager Senny Mayulu had the opened the scoring one minute before halftime. PSG advanced to 81 points. Stade Rennais beat Nice 2-0 while Lille were edged by the same score at Brest. Strasbourg lost 2-1 at Angers, who moved to safety with the win. St Etienne kept alive their hopes of avoiding the drop with a 2-0 away win over cup finalist Stade Reims. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
