CBFC Directs Sitaare Zameen Par Makers to Include Quote by Modi Mentioning the Year 2047: Report

Film The suggestion to include Modi's quote is part of the five changes/suggestions to the film which the CBFC has directed the makers to incorporate. Videograb from the trailer of Sitaare Zameen Par. Photo: New Delhi: The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has directed the makers of the Aamir Khan-starrer movie Sitaare Zameen Par to include a quote by Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioning the year 2047 in the opening disclaimer. The suggestion to include Modi's quote is part of the five changes/suggestions to the film which the CBFC has directed the makers to incorporate, reported Hindustan Times. The film was subsequently issued a U/A certification on June 17, which confirms that the modifications were done, with the Prime Minister's quote inserted after the film's opening disclaimer, which has also been changed as per the CBFC's directions. The newspaper reported that it was not immediately clear what the quote is about. The movie, which is set to release on June 20, stars Aamir Khan and Genelia Deshmukh, and tells the story of a basketball coach who teaches the sport to a team of intellectually disabled people as community service after the directions of a court. The other changes in the movie directed by CBFC were the replacement of the term 'business woman' with 'business person'; a 30-second disclaimer at the beginning of the film be replaced with a 26-second voice-over; a visual containing the word 'kamal' (lotus) be removed, along with its appearance in subtitles; and 'Michael Jackson' be replaced with 'Lovebirds' in the subtitles. In recent years, the CBFC has increasingly been suggesting cuts and modifications in movie scenes. In April this year, the CBFC had asked the makers of the film Phule to remove several caste-based terms, after objection from Brahmin outfits, resulting in the postponing of its release. The directive of CBFC included removing terms such as 'Mahar', 'Mang', 'Peshvai', and 'Manu's system of caste', with the censor board terming them as 'sensitive.' Ananth Mahadevan, the director of Phule had told The Wire that he didn't agree with the modifications suggested by the CBFC. Namaskaram to all Telugu cinema lovers, to people of all communities, and especially to my Brahmin friends...!

As someone who worked as the dialogue writer for the film Kannappa, it deeply pains me to witness the ongoing malicious propaganda surrounding the movie, particularly targeting its intentions and portrayal. I feel compelled to share a few thoughts from my heart. My name is Akella Siva Prasad, and I am a Brahmin. The film Kannappa was directed by Sri Mukesh Kumar Singh, who is also a Brahmin hailing from North India, a highly respected director known for his exceptional work on mythological television series such as Mahabharat. At no point in this film are Brahmins or people of any caste disrespected or shown in a negative light. If we look at past films based on the legend of Kannappa, such as Sri Kalahasti Mahatyam featuring Kannada legend Dr. Rajkumar, and Bhakta Kannappa starring Sri Krishnam Raju Garu — both depicted the temple priest, Mahadev Shastri (played by Sri Mudigonda Lingamurthy in the former and Sri Rao Gopal Rao in the latter), as someone who secretly gives the deity's ornaments to his concubine. In contrast, in the Kannappa film, Sri Vishnu Manchu Garu, who not only played the lead role but also contributed to the story, chose to elevate the character of Mahadev Shastri (played by Sri Mohan Babu Garu) as a noble and devout Shaivite, based on the 16th-century literary work Sri Kalahasti Mahatyam authored by Dhurtjati. Audiences will clearly understand this respectful portrayal after watching the film. Furthermore, not just during the writing phase but even after the film's completion, the makers showed the film to the chief priests of the sacred Sri Kalahasti temple, who deeply appreciated it and offered blessings with Vedic chants to both Sri Mohan Babu Garu and Sri Vishnu Garu. Also worth noting is that several Brahmins contributed to the film in various departments — including renowned lyricist Sri Ramajogayya Sastry Garu, who penned one of the songs. Let me emphasize — no one would spend crores of rupees, endure immense hardships, and go to such lengths to create a film just to disrespect any community. Lastly, Kannappa has not even been released yet. Those spreading baseless rumours and misinformation — may Lord Shiva himself deal with them.

Politicians nurture caste-based vote banks Apropos 'Kamandal to Mandal, politics takes a new direction' (Hans India; June 17), I wish to state that politicians have conveniently adopted caste as a lucrative commodity to garner votes, just like religion. Caste-based reservation is an offshoot of this. Reservation, if at all, must be made available solely on economic grounds, rather than caste and faith. Isn't it truly unfair for a Brahmin languishing in penury to be denied government support through reservation just because he belongs to an 'upper caste', while a filthy rich Christian and Muslim continues to enjoy the fruits of reservation as they belong to a 'scheduled caste or a scheduled tribe'? Does any party or person have the political will to bell the cat? Dr. George Jacob, Kochi Cong should learn from Centre's national census In response to the 'Kamandal' to Mandal, politics takes a new direction; (THI, June 17), the new mantra of caste politics as adopted by the Congress is to make it a part of the general census, which, incidentally, has been accepted as norm by the government. Inherently, the fever of caste census promoted by the Congress in Telangana and Karnataka, where it is in power, did not relevantly reflect the caste percentages as the focus was on OBCs while the ST/SC communities have already been enjoying the advantages of quota, elbowing other similar categories to enter the fray. The Karnataka caste survey proved a disappointing experience for the ruling party that wants to pander to the Lingayat and Vokkaliga entities. The Central exercise to go for a national census is a logical step as it is without the wicked politics being indulged in the Congress, and its allies. K R Venkata Narasimhan, Madurai Tackling outbreak of diarrhoea in Odisha Apropos THI's news items in Visakhapatnam (Odisha edition on June 16 and 17), it is laudable that the district administration is tackling outbreak of diarrhoea on a war-footing. It is indeed heartening that they have closed eateries, water supplies and meat outlets besides treating patients and referrals as per the immediate requirements. Jeypore has a large floating population from the adjoining Koraput district covering Lamtaput, Onakadelli, Machkund and Govindapalli the surroundings of which is a large tribal population. They live on the remote hillocks under inhospitable circumstances. They visit the weekly market at Onakadelli every Thursday and then throng the Genco Hospital. In emergency cases, they bring the patients to the hospital and if necessary, arrange transportation to Lamtaput Mission or the government hospital, or Jeypore and at times to Visakhapatnam. In this context, the administration can undertake surveillance by way of medical camps in all the sensitive villages, and village marketplaces. Cleanliness drive is a must and all staff including teachers and anganwadis may be deployed in sensitive areas. Deploying a BSF team in the vicinity will come in handy in addressing the issue. Hopefully, the latest diarrhoea outbreak will be managed effectively and on a priority basis. Dr T Ramadas, Visakhapatnam Centre notifies 2027 population Census Compelled by the constant and consistent demand of the Congress party and its allies for a caste census, the NDA government finally gave in and announced a programme for the same in 2027. The Congress party is making an all-out effort to return to power at the Centre. Towards this, it is raking up the caste census issue, only with the ulterior motive of dividing the Hindu community in the country on caste-lines. It has been toeing the British legacy of 'divide and rule' that has helped the party to rule the country for over four decades. The double standards being employed by the Congress party in states where it is in power is getting exposed. Upper caste politicians still rule the roost while denying others (BCs in particular) their share of power within the government! Though the NDA is compelled to take up caste census, it is also not expected to take up caste-based distribution of political power, as it is against caste-based reservations in education, employment and politics. It has been advocating reservations on economic backwardness irrespective of caste, creed and religion. For this a constitutional amendment is necessary and for that it needs a 2/3rd majority in the parliament, which it lacks as of now! It is now a tricky question for NDA, which has officially announced the census programme. All said and done, the Congress' ploy is working out. It would be interesting to see which outfit ultimately reaps political mileage out of it. Govardhana Myneedu, Vijayawada

ADGP held, MLA under lens in TN for teenager's abduction after brother's ‘self-respect' marriage

While the high court ordered the arrest of ADGP Jayaram, an Indian Police Service officer, for his alleged involvement in the kidnapping case, Jagan Moorthy was asked to appear before the police for investigation. The alleged involvement of ADGP H.M. Jayaram came to light on 16 June when the Tiruvallur Police revealed it before the high court during a hearing on an anticipatory bail petition of MLA 'Poovai' M. Jagan Moorthy, leader of Dalit outfit Puratchi Bharatham. He represents the Kilvaithinakuppam (SC) constituency in Vellore district. Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Police have arrested an Additional Director General of Police based on a Madras High Court order Monday in connection with an 18-year-old's kidnapping case in which an MLA is also a suspect. According to the Tiruvallur district police, the case was filed based on a complaint from a person named Lakshmi against a group of people in Theni for allegedly kidnapping her 18-year-old son on 6 May, 2025. On Saturday evening, a police team from Tiruvallur district had arrived at Jagan Moorthy's residence in Poonamallee to investigate him. When her family got to know about their marriage, they went on to search for them. After failing to find the couple, a group of people went to Dhanush's house and kidnapped his younger brother, police said. Based on Lakshmi's complaint, police arrested five people, including the woman's father Vanaraja, their relatives Manikandan and Ganesan; and Puratchi Bharatham party member and advocate Sarathkumar, and constable Maheshwari, who has been removed from service in a separate case. Police said the party advocate and the former police constable confessed to the crime. 'Involvement' of ADGP, MLA A senior official in the Tiruvallur Police told ThePrint that the woman's father wanted to break off the marriage as it was a 'self-respect' marriage—a form of marriage practised among Hindus in Tamil Nadu that emphasises equality and respect between partners and is conducted without traditional rituals or Brahmin priests. The official said that the family approached Maheshwari, who sought the help of ADGP Jayaram, who in turn reached out to Jagan Moorthy to sort the issue out. 'Subsequently, the MLA used his henchman to (try and) kidnap the couple and separate them. However, as the couple was not at home, they kidnapped the boy's 18-year-old younger brother, who was sleeping on the terrace,' the senior official said. However, upon learning that the police have launched a search operation to find the kidnapped youth, the gang dropped the 18-year-old back at his house. 'This is where the involvement of ADGP comes in. Since police were searching for the boy and the kidnappers, the ADGP had helped the gang by giving his official car to drop the boy back to avoid police checking. Inquiries have revealed that the girl's father Vanaraja and the former police constable Maheshwari too travelled in the official car used by ADGP,' the senior police official told ThePrint. The high court heard the MLA's anticipatory bail petition Monday, when both the accused appeared before the court. Justice P. Velmurugan ordered the police to arrest Jayaram, while also ordering Jagan Moorthy to appear before the police for further investigation into the case.
