Zach Braff: Scrubs Revival Will Capture Same ‘Humor and Heart,' Show How JD Has Been ‘Beaten Down by the System'
ABC's Scrubs revival will do more than just 'play the hits.' Series creator Bill Lawrence was joined by leading man Zach Braff at the ATX TV Festival in Austin, Texas, Sunday, where they opened up about the impetus for the highly anticipated follow-up. Like, those guys are 50 now!' Lawrence exclaimed. 'So, we have to figure out what that looks like.' And according to Braff, those discussions are well underway. 'When Bill and I shoot the s—t about it, [we ask ourselves] how do you still have the spirit of the [original] show — the humor and the heart of the show, and the fantasies and all the fun stuff that we all loved?' he relayed. 'The show was about a young doctor coming into this new world, so what is it like [to be] a doctor who is 50 and has been beaten down by the system? It's very, very hard to be a doctor today.' At this point, Lawrence interjected and acknowledged that, yes, 'medicine has a changed a lot. In some dark, hard ways, but [also] in some very comedic ways….' 'And what is [JD's] life like now?' Braff asked. 'Obviously, you can still have the bromance, and the love, and the friendship. But coming at it from the opposite angle, what is it like for a guy who has been through this system and dealing with all that stuff for so long?' And that's what excites them as they talk more about a potential Season 10, which is still awaiting an official green light at the network. Of course, Lawrence and Braff also are looking forward to getting the proverbial band back together. When I moderated the Bill Lawrence & Friends panel the previous evening — an event that also featured Josh Hopkins (Cougar Town), Brett Goldstein and Phil Dunster (Ted Lasso), and Charly Clive (star of Lawrence's forthcoming Steve Carell comedy for HBO) — Lawrence and Braff reiterated just how inseparable the Scrubs cast has remained since its original nine-season run wrapped 15 years ago. 'We're all still friends,' Braff said. 'People think this is a lie we tell you, but we all really hang out. Bill and I go over to Johnny C. [McGinley's] house in Malibu and sit in his sauna, Donald and I are legitimately best friends… As we speak, he's staying in my apartment in New York City….' 'Neil Flynn is on Shrinking,' Lawrence interjected, 'and Sarah [Chalke] is out with my wife [Christa Miller right now].' 'We're all very close,' Braff continued. 'And so when this came up — that ABC and Disney wanted to do it — it just felt like the right time .The idea of going and laughing all day long with this group of people again, that I love so much, sounded like a really good time.' Zach Braff to reprise his role for 'Scrubs' reboot
Scrubs is coming back, and so is JD. Zach Braff is the first original cast member to join the reboot of the 2000s medical sitcom, reported Deadline. Reprising his role as John "JD" Dorian, Braff was present for all nine seasons of the original series. The reboot, which was announced almost six months ago, is currently in development at ABC with no filming location announced as of yet. Sources report that Braff's news comes after months of internal negotiations and the star's request for the filming to take place in LA as opposed to Vancouver, which was originally planned. Reportedly, an escalation of the clash could have led to the project being scrapped, though both parties eventually came to an agreement. In the past, Braff has shared that he's optimistic about the project's prospects. "I'm going to tell you something that nobody else is going to get. Scrubs is a Disney show. Bill [Lawrence] has a Warner Bros deal. Once those two companies figure that out, I think the people will get what they want. I think it's going to happen," he told Entertainment Tonight. He also expressed interest in returning to the series, adding that he's still close to his former co-stars. "It would be so much fun [with] all my favourite people. We all still hang out. A lot of people who were on long shows say that, but it's true," he said. Although no other deals have been locked yet, 20th TV — the television studio arm of 20th Century Studios — is expected to reach out to original cast members Sarah Chalke (Elliot Reid), Donald Faison (Christopher Turk), John C McGinley (Perry Cox), and Judy Reyes (Carla Espinosa) soon enough. All have said that they would be happy to return. With original series creator Bill Lawrence also onboard under an exclusive overall deal, the reboot is off to a promising start. However, Lawrence won't be writing or running the show as he has much on his plate — Shrinking, Ted Lasso, Bad Monkey, and the upcoming Steve Carell comedy series. Speaking to Deadline in October last year, he revealed that the series was very close to "being figured out". Sharing his insights on the process, he added that he wanted to approach the reboot with a combination in mind. Lawrence wants to show new viewers "what the world of medicine was like for the people they love" and how it's viewed by "idealistic" young people who pursue the field because they consider it a calling.

Zach Braff is getting ready! It was reported that the 50-year-old actor will return to his popular role as John "J.D." Dorian in ABC's upcoming Scrubs revival. From 2001 to 2010, Braff played J.D., the central physician in the popular medical comedy, alongside Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes, and Christa Miller. Braff returned for only six episodes of the series' ninth and final season, which introduced a new cast of characters. Throughout its tenure, the actor got three Golden Globe nominations and one Emmy nomination. Braff has expressed interest in returning to Sacred Heart Hospital for a possible revival since the show's conclusion. During an appearance on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast in August 2024, the actor shared what he misses most about his role in the show. I miss laughing every day. Every day, belly laughter was part of the work. And when that went gone, by the end of the nine years, we were all exhausted," he remarked. "We were beginning to recycle jokes. Though the sitcom's end in 2010 felt like the correct decision, Braff stated that he would love to reprise his part if the opportunity arose. However, he had a few conditions that would have to be met if he returned. "When we signed up to do our show, they can put you under a pretty insane contract of, like, seven years and stuff, which was... which I wouldn't do [again]," he told me. "But is this a limited thing? You're basically saying, 'Do you want go get the group back together and f------ laugh your ass off with some of your greatest buddies and be paid well?' Yeah, that sounds incredible." Bill Lawrence , the show's original creator, previously addressed Deadline about his concept for the upcoming Scrubs remake. The showrunner stated that he intended the upcoming series to have both original cast members and new actors. "We've been talking about a lot, and I think the only real reason to do it is a combo," he told me. "A: people want to see what the world of medicine was like for the individuals they care about, which is an essential component of any successful reboot. But B: I think the show has always worked because you get to watch young people being thrust into the realm of medicine, knowing that the young people who go there are incredibly idealistic and do it because it is a calling. " He went on to say, "There's no cliché about 'wealthy physicians playing golf'; that's no longer the case. So, no matter what, I believe it would be a huge error not to do a combination of those two things.

Scrubs Reboot: Zach Braff to Reprise Role, More Original Cast Eyed
After months of negotiations, Zach Braff has signed on for the reboot. Per Deadline, Braff will reprise his role as John 'J.D.' Dorian for ABC's medical sitcom follow-up. Braff's return nearly happened, as issues over money and filming locations were the sources of conflict. Braff reportedly requested the reboot be filmed in Los Angeles, not Vancouver. Without Braff, the Scrubs reboot was on life support. However, a deal has now been reached with Braff, though no filming location has been announced. With Braff back, ABC and 20th Television will now go after several core cast members to return for the reboot. This includes Donald Faison as Christopher Turk, Sarah Chalke as Elliot Reid, Judy Reyes as Carla Espinosa, and John C. McGinley as Perry Cox. The Scrubs reboot officially entered development in December. Series creator Bill Lawrence is attached as an executive producer and will help develop the project. Lawrence will not be the showrunner if the reboot gets a series order. Lawrence is currently under an exclusive deal with Warner Bros. TV, where he spearheads shows like Shrinking, Bad Monkey, Ted Lasso, and the upcoming Steve Carell HBO comedy. However, Lawrence finally came to a deal with Disney to help advance the Scrubs reboot. Scrubs is a medical sitcom that follows the lives of medical students and doctors at the fictional Sacred Heart Hospital. Created by Lawrence, Scrubs premiered in October 2001 and ran for seven seasons on NBC. The show finished up its run on ABC for the final two seasons. Zach Braff Returning as JD for "Scrubs" Reboot
Yara Sameh Zach Braff is set to reprise the role of J.D. in a reboot of 'Scrubs' being developed at ABC. The reboot was first reported to be in early development in December, with original series creator Bill Lawrence serving as executive producer but not showrunner. Lawrence, Braff and other 'Scrubs' alum have discussed the idea of a reboot for years, but it couldn't go into motion until after negotiations between Disney, which owns the IP, and Warner Bros. Television, where Lawrence has an overall deal. While working on 'Scrubs' at Disney-owned 20th Television, Lawrence remains under his deal at WBTV, where he produces the Apple TV+ comedy series 'Shrinking,' 'Ted Lasso' and 'Bad Monkey.' 'Scrubs' premiered in 2001 on NBC, which aired the series for seven seasons before cancelling it. It was then renewed by ABC for an eighth season, which was intended to end the series, though the network later greenlit a ninth season subtitled 'Scrubs: Med School' in which only John C. McGinley and Donald Faison stayed on as series regulars. Braff appeared in six out of 13 episodes. Alongside Braff as J.D. aka John Dorian, the original cast of 'Scrubs' included McGinley as Perry Cox, Faison as Chris Turk, Judy Reyes as Carla Espinosa, Sarah Chalke as Elliot Reid, Ken Jenkins as Bob Kelso and Neil Flynn as the janitor. The series was a single-camera sitcom set at Sacred Heart Hospital and narrated by J.D. as he and his friends advanced in their medical careers. Braff is the only cast member currently confirmed to be attached to the reboot.
