Red Sox Predicted To Acquire Controllable $10 Million Infielder
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Boston Red Sox are in a weird spot this season. They have some talent, but following the shocking Rafael Devers deal, it seems like they're trending toward trying to contend next season rather than this season. With that in mind, the Red Sox could still hit the trade market with the intention of adding a controllable player to fill a hole on their roster. The Athletic's Jim Bowden recently predicted the Red Sox would acquire first baseman Nathaniel Lowe in a shocking trade with the Washington Nationals. Lowe has one more year of arbitration left on his contract. Steinbrenner Field on April 15, 2025 in Tampa, Florida. All players are wearing the number 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson Day. More"The Red Sox have a hole at first base, and Lowe would be a good fit. Last year he slashed .265/.361/.401 with 16 homers and 69 RBIs while playing plus defense at first base," Bowden wrote. "This year with the Nationals, he's hitting just .227 but has 12 doubles, 10 home runs, and 45 RBIs in 75 games. He'd be an upgrade for the Sox, who would control him through 2026. Lowe would be a solid placeholder until prospect James Tibbs III, acquired in the Devers trade, is ready for the majors." Lowe would be a great addition for the Red Sox. Triston Casas seems to be the first baseman of the future in Boston, but he was off to quite a rough start this season. With Casas' injury ending his season, Lowe could be the perfect replacement. Lowe is slashing .227/.294/376 this season. It's by far the worst season of his career, so the Red Sox could buy low and hope he returns to the 120 OPS+ player that he's been during the first six years of his career. Yankees Predicted to Trade For $66 Million All-Star Slugger, Fix Infield
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The New York Yankees' primary, healthy infield this season has featured Jazz Chisholm Jr. at third base, Anthony Volpe at shortstop, DJ LeMahieu at second base and Paul Goldschmidt at first base. The rotation between Goldschmidt, Ben Rice and Giancarlo Stanton at designated hitter and first base aside, the Yankees' infield has a few problems. For starters, Chisholm is a better defender at second base than in the hot corner. Also, LeMahieu's bat has not been up to par while he has handled a majority of the work at second base since he returned from injury. The Yankees should have options available on the trade block, but Hall of Famer Pedro Martínez predicted during a Bleacher Report livestream that the Yankees will trade for Eugenio Suárez of the Arizona Diamondbacks. BOSTON, MA - AUGUST 25: Eugenio Suárez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks points skyward as he rounds the bases after his three-run home run against the Boston Red Sox during the sixth inning at Fenway... BOSTON, MA - AUGUST 25: Eugenio Suárez #28 of the Arizona Diamondbacks points skyward as he rounds the bases after his three-run home run against the Boston Red Sox during the sixth inning at Fenway Park on August 25, 2024 in Boston, Massachusetts. MoreSuárez is playing on a $15 million club option this season, but will be a free agent once it ends. He signed a seven-year, $66 million deal before the 2018 season with the Cincinnati Reds. He was traded to the Seattle Mariners in 2022 before ending up on the Diamondbacks in 2023. Suárez was an All-Star back in 2018, but has proven to be a power threat over the course of his career. This season, he has a .237 average but is making up for it with 22 home runs and a .846 OPS. He has 298 career home runs. Adding Suárez would allow Chisholm to move back to second base and slide LeMahieu to the bench. LeMahieu has slashed .244/.330/.337 through 30 games. The Arizona Diamondbacks are in fourth place in the National League West, entering play on Friday. They could end up being sellers, and a player like Suárez would be a prime candidate to be dealt. ‘Just hit him?' Former Red Sox debate whether Boston should throw at Rafael Devers
Things ended on a sour note between Rafael Devers and the Boston Red Sox. But did things get so back that the team would opt to hit their former star with a pitch when they meet this weekend? That was the topic tossed around by a pair of ex-Red Sox players on the show, 'Foul Territory.' Advertisement Appearing as a guest, former Boston closer Jonathan Papbelbon said he doesn't expect any smiles and handshakes with Devers when his old team comes to town to face his Papelbon on Friday. 'I think that they've cut the ties and I think all relationships are severed between everyone in that dugout, in the clubhouse and the front office with Raffy Defers,' Papelbon said. 'So I don't think there's going to be any smiles at all.' Co-host A.J. Pierzynski, who played for the Red Sox in 2014, took it a step forward by asking if Boston would consider plunking Devers with a pitch. Papelbon didn't think it would happen – not in today's game at least. Advertisement 'They don't do that anymore. Guys don't do it,' Papelbon said. Pierzynski and Papelbon agreed that, in years past, the possibility of the Red Sox throwing at a former disgruntled player would be on the table. Pierzynsky said that, if Red Sox Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez was around, then there 'would have been some action.' Papelbon said he'd been part of that type of scenario himself. The former closer said that then-manager Terry Francona told him to throw at Manny Ramirez after the slugger had been traded to the Chicago White Sox in 2010. 'I don't know if it's gonna happen or not. Maybe Alex Cora calls in somebody to drill him or not. I don't know, but I highly doubt it,' Papelbon said. Advertisement Pierzynski, who had a reputation for stirring the pot as a player, floated a scenario where the Red Sox 'accidentally' hit Devers in his first at-bat against his old team. Both players agreed that it would trigger a brawl, regardless of whether it was on purpose. 'Even if it's not accidental or not, (it) just hit him. Maybe on purpose or maybe not,' Papelbon said, We'll see how Devers and the Red Sox handle their reunion when the team takes on San Francisco Friday night.
