Free Boston events: Roxbury film fest, roller disco, boxing lessons
Free events READ IT & WEEP This years' Roxbury International Film Festival began last Thursday, inaugurating a new cohort of independent filmmakers of color. Screenings are taking place in and around Roxbury, but for those who can't make it to an in-person event, online script readings will happen over Zoom all week. Beginning Monday, playwright Louis Johnson, will lead a dramatization of his script 'Divided,' centering a biracial couple's experiences amid their nation's race war. Through Friday, tune in for live table reads featuring works by writers including Brandice Peltier, Kareem Nemley, Kenyatta Hoskins, Heather Gibson, and Kaili Y. Turner. June 23-27, noon. Goth Babe animates audience at Boston Calling with crowd surfing, contest (Photos)
Indie rocker Goth Babe brought the crowd at the Boston Calling Green Stage in on the action during his Sunday set with features such as crowd surfing on inflatable rafts and a dance-off competition for a coveted prize. The singer, whose real name is Griff Washburn, delighted fans with chill beats such as 'Canary Islands,' 'Weekend Friend' and 'Casita' across his 45-minute allotted afternoon spot. On two occasions, Washburn handed off pool floats to volunteers so that they could be carried through the crowd by their fellow spectators. Spectators also bounced around beach balls of varying sizes through the air as Goth Babe dove through his discography. At one point, Washburn divided the crowd into left and right sections and asked concertgoers to out-dance one another, with one lucky fan winning the prize of an inflatable boat. The left side won the battle. Vampire Weekend gives penultimate performance on Sunday at Boston Calling (Photos)
Indie rock band Vampire Weekend gave the second-to-last performance of Boston Calling's final night, dazzling audiences with newer material and hits from their early years in the 2000s. Lead vocalist Ezra Koenig, joined by bassist Chris Baio, drummer Chris Tomson and others, serenaded audiences to tunes such as 'Campus,' 'A-Punk' and 'Classical.' Vampire Weekend's set on the Green Stage was sandwiched between ska punk band Sublime, who preceded them, and rock headliner Dave Matthews Band, the final act of the music festival's three-day run. Remi Wolf overcomes audio issues to give powerhouse Boston Calling set (Photos)
Remi Wolf's hour-long Sunday afternoon set at Boston Calling at first hit a snag due to technical issues, but that didn't stop the singer-songwriter from delivering a powerhouse performance. Wolf, 29, emerged on the music festival's Green Stage for her 5:40 p.m. set with her band, starting off with her hit 'Cinderella,' before it quickly became apparent that her microphone's audio was cutting in and out. While crews worked to remedy the problem, Wolf improvised on stage saying, 'We're gonna keep on pushing baby,' to cheers from the audience. Once the audio issue was resolved, Wolf was back up and running, turning up the energy for songs such as 'Pitiful,' 'Toro,' 'Photo ID' and more — even hopping on the drum set herself at one point.
