Bruins News: Boston Hires New Assistant Coach
The Boston Bruins have announced that they have hired Steve Spott as a new assistant coach. With former Bruins interim head coach Joe Sacco leaving the organization after Boston hired Marco Sturm as their new bench boss, the Original Six club had a vacant assistant coach spot up for grabs. Now, Spott is the guy they are going with for the role. Advertisement Spott, 57, just completed a three-year stint as an assistant coach with the Dallas Stars. Before then, he was an assistant coach with the Vegas Golden Knights (2019-20 to 2021-22), San Jose Sharks (2015-16 to 2018-19), and Toronto Maple Leafs (2014-15). He was also head coach of the Maple Leafs' AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, during the 2013-14 season. Overall, the Bruins have landed a solid assistant coach with plenty of experience in Spott. With this move, the Bruins' coaching staff for the 2025-26 season is complete. In addition to Spott, Jay Leach and Chris Kelly will be the Bruins' assistant coaches for this upcoming campaign. Ryan Whitney Puts Bruins On Blast for Brad Marchand Trade
Ryan Whitney Puts Bruins On Blast for Brad Marchand Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After spending 16 years with the Boston Bruins, Brad Marchand is now a two-time Stanley Cup champion, lifting the trophy as a member of the Florida Panthers following his mid-season move to Sunrise. Advertisement The midseason trade from Boston saw Mrachand switch sweaters for the first time in his career, and the decision made by the Bruins' brass didn't sit well with "Spittin' Chiclets" host and former NHL player Ryan Whitney. 'One of the first thoughts in my X spaces was, like, (expletive) Boston, what are you doing?' Whitney said on Wednesday. 'First, (expletive) Boston for being that bad, to then trade him, and then — what are you doing? What am I missing here?' The move stunned Whitney, who couldn't understand why the Bruins would part ways with a player they'd just named team captain before the season. 'Even if you're like, sort of rebuilding, like he's your captain, a legend,' Whitney said. 'Why did they trade him?' Advertisement The Bruins dealt Marchand to the Panthers while sitting outside the playoff picture, securing just a conditional draft pick in exchange for their captain ahead of his pending free agency. There is some speculation about Marchand's potential return to Boston, but neither the Bruins nor the player has confirmed any mutual interest in doing so. The former Boston Bruins captain scored 10 goals and totaled 20 points over 23 playoff is proving instrumental in the Panthers' run, and his ability to perform in big moments has only boosted his value. And with July 1 fast approaching, teams are lining up. Don Cherry claims the Boston Bruins plotted Brad Marchand return Don Cherry, the legendary and often controversial voice of Canadian hockey, stirred the pot this week with a stunning theory about Marchand's trade. On his podcast, Cherry proposed that the Bruins and Panthers might have secretly agreed to a one-year arrangement, allowing Marchand to return to Boston after the 2025 season. According to Cherry, the plan was for Florida to sign him temporarily for the Cup push, with Boston reclaiming their former captain this summer. Stanley Cup win and GM comments add intrigue As the Panthers lifted the Cup after a dominant Game 6 win over the Edmonton Oilers, Marchand stood at the center of the celebration. General manager Bill Zito even joked about buying a Dairy Queen franchise to convince Marchand to stay, while the comment, lighthearted as it was, underlined how valuable Marchand has become to Florida's locker room and on-ice chemistry. Despite this, uncertainty lingers. Marchand is now in a rare position of power as a veteran leader. He is a proven performer, and free agent with Cup-winning momentum. Whether Cherry's theory holds any truth remains unknown, but one thing is certain, Marchand's next move could reshape the NHL landscape. Brad Marchand's kids send him adorable voicemail before Stanley Cup Final Game 6: ‘No matter what happens...'
As Brad Marchand prepares for Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final, he has received a reminder of what matters most off the ice. Just hours before the puck dropped at Amerant Bank Arena, The Players' Tribune shared a video capturing a voicemail sent by Marchand's three kids: Sloane, Sawyer, and Rue. The Florida Panthers veteran, who was traded from the Boston Bruins earlier this year, was one win away from championship glory. For a player chasing the Cup, his children's voices were the kind of reminder that puts everything in perspective. Marchand hears from his biggest fans: 'We've got you' Each of Marchand's children introduced themselves in the recording, sending him good luck and reminding him of their unflinching support. 'Congratulations on getting on to the Stanley Cup Finals,' said Sawyer. Sloane said, 'It's been so awesome to watch you over my whole childhood…' 'No matter what happens in the game, we're so proud of you. You still got us and we got you,' Sawyer continued. Rue, the youngest, also chimed in to tell her father how much she loved him, 'The best daddy in the whole wide world,' while Sloane reassured Marchand that his family would always be there waiting for him, no matter how the series turned out. Katrina Marchand joins in after touching Father's Day post The video was shared widely across hockey circles and gave fans a rare view of Marchand not as a playoff veteran, but simply as a dad. The voicemail wasn't the only sign of support from home. Katrina Marchand, Brad's wife, also reposted the video. She had previously shared a Father's Day tribute as well, describing her husband as 'fiercely devoted' and 'deeply present in their children's lives'. With the Cup in hand, emotions are at an all-time high. But the voicemail from his kids likely kept Marchand grounded, reminding him that his legacy had already reached much farther than just the rink.
