‘Superb, superb, superb': Sunil Gavaskar lauds Rishabh Pant's century vs England, months after ‘stupid, stupid, stupid' tirade against him in Australia
A few months after Sunil Gavaskar slammed Rishabh Pant on air during the Border Gavaskar series shouting 'stupid, stupid, stupid' after the wicketkeeper-batter threw away his wicket against Australia, the Indian legend lauded Pant with shouts of 'superb, superb, superb' when he smashed his 7th Test century against England at Leeds on Saturday. Pant had been at the receiving end of Gavaskar's anger during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 when, in the fourth Test of the series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), he went to attack a delivery, miscued his shot and gave a catch to third man. The dismissal angered the legendary India cricketer who was in the commentary booth, shouting 'stupid, stupid, stupid!'. On Saturday, a visibly enthusiastic Gavaskar on commentary said, 'Yes, superb, superb, superb. Absolutely terrific batting by the young man.' Pant struck a six off the first ball of the 100th over of India's first innings, clearing the fence off Shoaib Bashir to bring up the milestone. It was his first century since September 2024 when he scored 109 against Bangladesh. In 90 Tests, Dhoni had scored 4,876 runs with six tons and 33 fifties at an average of 38.09 and remains the highest run-scorer as an Indian wicketkeeper-batter in Tests. Pant, who completed 3,000 runs during this innings of 134 off 178 balls (12×4; 6×6), also has 15 fifties in 44 Tests and averages nearly 44. The third in this list is Wriddhiman Saha with two centuries, followed by Syed Kirmani and Farokh Engineer with two each. Nayan Mongia has also scored one century. India ultimately were bowled out by England on 471 runs as Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue took 4 wickets apiece.

Not Shubman Gill, former selector wants KL Rahul to bat at Virat Kohli's position
Former India chief selector Saba Karim has named KL Rahul as his ideal choice to bat at Virat Kohli's position in the upcoming Test series against England. Kohli's retirement just ahead of the series has left massive shoes to fill for the team many are expecting captain Shubman Gill to bat at number four, Saba Karim has suggested KL Rahul to be the ideal fit for the role. The former wicketkeeper batter mentioned how Rahul can use his experience and play dual role for the team by negotiating the early set back and also take the innings in the absence of Kohli, Rahul's role is monumental. And I look at him, as a batter who can bat a number four. Many people have suggested different batting positions, but I feel that KL is ideal to replace or take over, the role of Virat Kohli at number four, because that number four, he can play a dual role of negotiating the early setback if that happens in the Indian side, and then he can carry the innings forward. He does have the right kind of technique. He has done well in England," Karim told NDTV. Furthermore, Karim also stated that Rahul has shown a lot of maturity over the past few seasons, which will come handy in England."He has a temperament. And I think with the past season, season and a half, there is a lot of maturity that has come in. So I think that's the kind of responsibility with Indian team management,' he has batted just twice at number four in his Test career, coincidentally against England, and has scored 108 at an average of 54. The right-handed batter recently re-established himself as an opener in Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. Hence, it would be a big risk for the team management to tinker with his batting position, especially after the retirement of captain Rohit Sharma.

Shubman Gill reveals Jasprit Bumrah's Test plans for England Tour, Indian Test captain says...
Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah. (PIC - X) New Delhi: The five-match Test series between India and England is going to start from June 20. Young batsman Shubman Gill will lead Team India in this tour. However, this series is not considered easy for the Indian team, as experienced players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin will not be part of the team this time. At the same time, the fitness of fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah also remains a matter of concern for the team management. Bumrah was recently ruled out due to a back injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 and remained away from the field for about four months. Since then, caution is being taken in his Test workload. Former Indian batsman Dinesh Karthik, while talking to Shubman Gill, asked a question about Bumrah's availability, to which Gill replied in a light-hearted manner that it will depend on how many matches are affected by rain. Jasprit Bumrah's fitness is not only affecting his bowling, but this is also the reason why he is out of the race for captaincy for this tour. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar had said that one of the reasons for Gill getting the captaincy is that Bumrah will not be seen playing all five matches on the England tour due to fitness. After this, everyone wants to know which Tests Bumrah will be seen playing on the England tour. Former wicketkeeper batsman Karthik also asked Gill the same question about Bumrah. Responding to this question, Shubman Gill said, 'It will largely depend on how we progress during the series. It is possible that it may rain in a match, so this decision will be taken match by match. We have to see what Bumrah's workload is and what his condition says.' He further said- 'We do not want to decide in advance which matches he will play, because sometimes the circumstances are in your favor and sometimes not. These things will decide whether he will be able to play in the next match or not.' If Shubman Gill's statement is seen directly, then it is clear that Bumrah will get a chance only when the circumstances are favorable to him. In case of more workload, it is possible that he may not be given a chance in some matches.
