RM1.5 mln flood mitigation project underway along Jalan Kong Yit Khim in Sibu

SIBU (June 17): Upgrading work has commenced on a one-kilometre flood-prone section of Jalan Kong Yit Khim between KM9 and KM10 in the Salim-Stabau area, at a cost of approximately RM1.5 million.
Sibu Public Works Department (JKR) assistant engineer Sofia Ma'soud said the project, funded through the state disaster fund, is scheduled for completion within four months but may finish ahead of schedule.
'The upgrading work on this stretch is currently ongoing.
'Besides that, there are four other (flood prone) portions along Jalan Kong Yit Khim already approved (for upgrading),' Sofia told reporters during the site inspection yesterday.
In Kanowit's Penyulau area, she said four similar flood-prone stretches have been approved and are currently in the design stage, with completion targeted for this year.

Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Dudong Division chairman Datuk Teo Boon Siew expressed gratitude to PDP president Dato Sri Tiong King Sing for helping secure the project funding.
'I am very thankful that the upgrading works have started on the one-kilometer section from kilometer 9 to 10 along Jalan Kong Yit Khim (Salim-Stabau area).
'This is one of five portions inundated during flooding earlier this year,' he recalled.
