Disney CEO Bob Iger's dramatic move following LA protests that will be sure to infuriate Trump

Disney CEO Bob Iger is fighting Donald Trump through his women's soccer team, who have publicly protested the ICE raids on Los Angeles and the president's response to riots. Iger - along with his wife and dean of the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism Willow Bay - is the majority shareholder of Angel City FC, who represent Los Angeles in the National Women's Soccer League. Amid controversy over federal law enforcement's appearances at Dodger Stadium, Angel City have been publicly and vociferously in opposition to the president in moves that Deadline reports Iger backed and was 'thoroughly consulted on.' Ahead of their recent match against North Carolina Courage, the organization offered the first 10,000 fans - Angel City regularly leads NWSL in attendance and averaged 19,000 per match in 2024 - a t-shirt with the words 'Immigrant City FC' on the front and 'Los Angeles is for everyone' in English and Spanish. The team has also sold shirts on their website with proceeds going to Castro Immigration Services, who 'serve the immigrant community by providing quality legal counsel on immigration matters and connecting immigrant families to available resources.' Aside from Iger, the club has several liberal celebrities with minority shares, including Eva Longoria, Jessica Chastain and America Ferrara, putting several famous and powerful people at loggerheads with Trump. Angel City FC - along with MLS side LAFC, with whom they share a stadium - have issued statements of support for immigrants but otherwise the city's sports franchises have refrained from commenting. Iger and Bay have made no public statement on the protests, however it appears he not only signed off on it but was briefed on the move every step of the way. Iger - along with his wife and dean of the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism Willow Bay - is the majority shareholder of Angel City FC, who represent Los Angeles in the National Women's Soccer League, who gave out these pro-immigrant t-shirts at a recent match has reached out to the White House for comment. It comes as Iger's day job at Disney has tried to make nice with the second Trump administration on multiple big occasions. Most recently, ABC News has fired star anchor Terry Moran just days after he penned a social media post calling Donald Trump a 'world class hater' and blasting top advisor Stephen Miller as full of 'bile.' A spokesperson for the network confirmed the firing in a statement on Tuesday that specifically cited Moran's post as a 'clear violation' of ABC's policy. 'We are at the end of our agreement with Terry Moran and based on his recent post – which was a clear violation of ABC News policies – we have made the decision to not renew,' the statement read. 'At ABC News, we hold all of our reporters to the highest standards of objectivity, fairness and professionalism, and we remain committed to delivering straightforward, trusted journalism,' the rep added. Moran, 65, was a senior national correspondent at the network. He previously served as ABC's Chief Foreign Correspondent from 2013 to 2018. In May, it was reported ABC News and its parent company Disney have asked the ladies of The View to dial back their constant complaining about President Donald Trump. Ahead of their recent match against North Carolina Courage, the organization offered the first 10,000 fans - Angel City regularly leads NWSL in attendance and averaged 19,000 per match in 2024 - a t-shirt with the words 'Immigrant City FC' on the front and 'Los Angeles is for everyone' in English and Spanish ABC News President Almin Karamehmedovic and Iger made the requests separately, The Daily Beast reported. The daily talk show has been filled with criticisms of the commander-in-chief and his policies, with mostly kind words for Democrats. Iger reportedly expressed his support for the show but made clear it needed to pull back on politics. Prior to that, Moran co-anchored the network's newsmagazine Nightline for eight years. He was ABC News' Chief White Correspondent from 1999 to 2005. Earlier this year, the network paid President Donald Trump a $16 million settlement over his remarks about the president. Stephanopoulos erroneously claimed on-air that the president-elect was found 'liable for rape' - rather than the correct phrasing of sexual abuse - against writer E. Jean Carroll in March. Trump sued Stephanopoulos and the network for defamation soon after the segment aired, accusing the anchor of making the statements with 'malice' and a disregard for the truth. As part of the settlement, Stephanopoulos was forced to issue a public apology. Angel City FC - along with MLS side LAFC, with whom they share a stadium - have issued statements of support for immigrants but otherwise the city's sports franchises have refrained from commenting In 2023, Iger revealed the company will 'quiet the noise' around cultural issues because it has shown to be bad for business. Iger wants to make content that is entertaining, not issue-focused - after The House of Mouse faced backlash over pushing a ' woke agenda'. His comments about focusing on entertainment rather than 'issues' came after a spate of recent box office busts. Among these was the live-action version of The Little Mermaid, Guardians of the Galaxy, Strange World and Lightyear. The Little Mermaid sparked controversy over the casting of Black actress Halle Bailey as the title character, Ariel. Lightyear, released one year ago with a reported budget of $200 million, brought in a modest $226.7 million in worldwide ticket sales. The film could not be shown in 14 Middle Eastern and Asian countries because of its depiction of a same-sex relationship. Since the company has been faced with loss from the Disney+ streaming business, which is expected to become profitable only next year, they have turned to the parks business to soften the blow.

Disney CEO confidant: The next CEO must have these skills

Listen, like and subscribe to Opening Bid on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, YouTube, or wherever you find your favorite podcasts. Disney's (DIS) complexity, combined with industry upheavals, makes finding a replacement for CEO Bob Iger next to impossible. It can be done, however. "You have to have a new CEO that is really good at least managing creativity," Candle Media CEO Kevin Mayer said on Yahoo Finance's Opening Bid podcast at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity (watch above; listen below). "You got to be able to manage creative people and the egos around Hollywood." Mayer is a former longtime Iger deputy, who led the launch of Disney+ before a brief stint in 2020 as the CEO of TikTok. He was advising Iger on the CEO search last year but told Yahoo Finance he is no longer working in that capacity. Mayer added, "I think the biggest skillset you have to have is a gift of a real strategic business sense, because there's a bunch of assets at Disney that are globally deployed. It's multifaceted, from theme parks to consumer products to movies to film to TV to Disney+ to Hulu to ESPN. You got to manage a lot, and then you have to also decide, what assets do we keep? What assets do we add?" There are reportedly four internal candidates being considered for the coveted position, which Iger held from 2005 to 2020 before returning in November 2022. Those four are entertainment division co-chiefs Dana Walden and Alan Bergman, parks division head Josh D'Amaro, and ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro. Walden and D'Amaro are rumored to be top contenders, something Mayer agrees with. He said the next CEO of Disney will be an internal candidate. The search process must be executed flawlessly, following a high-profile bungling last time, when former CEO Bob Chapek was fired in favor of bringing back Iger. Chapek's brusque management style famously clashed with the many creatives who keep the magic inside of Disney's content and theme parks. Any new Disney CEO is getting a giant media ship contending with considerable industry change. Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) said this month it will split up amid the shift to streaming that has financially hammered its legacy TV assets. The company joins rival Comcast (CMCSA) in separating TV operations from streaming assets. Paramount (PARA) is still trying to close its deal with Skydance. Disney has repeatedly said it has no desire to spin off its TV networks, such as ABC, despite the industry challenges that have weighed on sales and profits. Mayer's best advice to whoever gets Iger's CEO throne? Pick Iger's brain. "Stay close to Bob Iger for the first six months," Mayer said. "Really take that apprenticeship to heart because Bob is an amazing CEO. Very few like him. If you can just be at his side and look at the whole company ... Sit by his side and just learn how he does things." Brian Sozzi is Yahoo Finance's Executive Editor and a member of Yahoo Finance's editorial leadership team. Marvel Studios Stacks 2028 with Four Theatrical Releases, So What Happened To Their Scaling Back Plan? — GeekTyrant

Marvel is apparently going big again in 2028, adding a fourth film to its release calendar for that year for December 15. The other dates set for that year include February 18, May 5, and November 10. This new slot has fans speculating about what films will fill these dates. Is it finally time for the X-Men to officially enter the spotlight? Could Blade rise from development hell? Or is Marvel keeping a bigger surprise under wraps? Variety broke the news of the additional release, but didn't reveal the film's title because Marvel hasn't either. What we do know is that several projects are officially in development, but currently date-less: Shang-Chi 2 , Black Panther 3 , Armor Wars , and of course, the highly-anticipated X-Men movie. Other movies that are rumored include Avengers: Secret Wars Part 2 , Eternals 2 , and even a potential Scarlet Witch solo movie as possibilities. The thing about releasing four Marvel films in one year is that it goes against the plan they've talked about in regards to scaling back. Disney CEO Bob Iger has publicly said the company is scaling back, saying: "We're slowly going to decrease volume and go to probably about two TV series a year instead of what had become four, and reduce our film output from maybe four a year to two or at the maximum three, and we're working hard on what that path is, we've got a couple of good films in '25 and then we're heading to more Avengers, which we're extremely excited about." So… what gives? Is this four-movie year a temporary exception, a reshuffling, or a sign that plans are still very much in flux behind the scenes? Whatever the answer is, 2028 just became a key year for the MCU, and it will be interesting to see what four movies fill it up.

Marvel Dates Potential Fourth Movie For 2028

2028 will mark a milestone year for Marvel Studios, as it looks to celebrate two decades of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with three previously announced projects. Now, the list will include a fourth movie, slated for 15 December 2028, joining the untitled trio earmarked for February, May, and November of the same year. The announcement comes as a surprise, considering Disney CEO Bob Iger's recent public admission that Marvel had 'lost a little focus by making too much', highlighting how 'quantity does not necessarily beget quality.' 'We all know that in our zeal to flood our streaming platform with more content, that we turned to all of our creative engines, including Marvel, and had them produce a lot more,' he said during an investor call in May. 'We've also learned over time that quantity does not necessarily beget quality. And frankly, we've all admitted to ourselves that we lost a little focus by making too much. By consolidating a bit and having Marvel focus much more on their films, we believe that will result in better quality.' As Variety reports, it's widely expected that some of these 2028 films won't be able to meet the stipulated release dates. None of them have been revealed, but other projects in development that could end up opening in 2028 include Black Panther 3 , a Fantastic Four sequel, a follow-up to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings , and an X-Men reboot by Michael Leslie. Development on Blade is on hold, so it's safe to assume that vampire hunter won't be returning anytime soon. Leading up to the year, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is set to be the final film for the studio in 2025, followed by Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday in 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars and an untitled feature will round out the 2027 slate. Si Jia is a casual geek at heart – or as casual as someone with Sephiroth's theme on her Spotify playlist can get. Marvel's upcoming movie? – Know the deeds, Lineup in 2028

The OTT platform collaborated with Marvel movies and announced that the famous Marvel-oriented production house will come up with a new movie in the month of December, 2028. It would be the fourth feature from the division set for that calendar year, with previously announced films scheduled for release in February, May, and November of the same year. The certainty of all four movies with the desired time is not there yet; it would be an unexpected move for the studio, given CEO Bob Iger's recent public admission that Marvel 'lost a little focus by making too much.' Iger's words in an investor call He said, 'We all know that in our zeal to flood our streaming platform with more content, that we turned to all of our creative engines, including Marvel, and had them produce a lot more,' Further saying, 'We've also learned over time that quantity does not necessarily beget quality. And frankly, we've all admitted to ourselves that we lost a little focus by making too much. By consolidating a bit and having Marvel focus much more on their films, we believe that will result in better quality. ' Holding of projects It is still not very sure if the movies will actually release in the year 2028, as it is known to hold on to projects. They do it to ensure they remain available for other films from the company.
