Guitars and Gasoline Music Festival attracts thousands to Calabogie area
Thousands of people from across Ontario are converging on the Calabogie area this weekend for the inaugural Guitars and Gasoline Music Festival. Being held at the Calabogie Motorsports Park, Guitars and Gasoline is a two-day music festival spread over Friday and Saturday, featuring artists including Blue Rodeo, Theory of a Deadman and Joss Ross. This is the first such festival being held at the racetrack in Calabogie, which is allowing festival goers to camp out directly along the more than five-kilometre-long track, Canada's longest speedway. Festival promoter Ken Craig says the support for the first-year festival, and its all-Canadian lineup, has been encouraging. 'We're going to be doing a little over 6,000 (tickets) right now, probably hit 7,000 because of the nice weather,' Craig told CTV News Friday. 'Very pleased with that for a first-year festival.' Craig adds that camping for the festival is 82 per cent sold out heading into the weekend, with tickets for the shows still available. For those planning to attend the festival, located roughly 100 kilometres west of Ottawa, event coordinator Jamie Steenbakkers says attendees should come prepared. 'Make sure to get your wristbands on and put your parking passes on your windshield sticker and also make sure if you have a will call ticket to print out your barcode so that you have that ready to scan so that we can issue you your wristbands and tickets,' Steenbakkers added. OPP are warning drivers commuting through the Calabogie area this weekend to be aware for heavy traffic and slow downs due to the festival.

All Canadian midway, music lineup part of new-look Regina QCX in 2025
The 2025 version of Regina's Queen City Ex (QCX) taking place July 30 to Aug. 3 will include a 100 per cent Canadian midway, new pricing, and an all Canadian music lineup. West Coast Amusements was announced as QCX's new long-term midway partner, bringing new and old favourite rides to QCX. 'We've got some new exciting rides that haven't been here before, so we are excited about that,' West Coast Amusements president and CEO Rob Hauser said at an announcement on Friday. 'Big thrill rides, speed, freakout, chaos, frenzy as well as lots of kids rides, family rides,' he added. Hauser said coming to Regina is a big opportunity for West Coast Amusements, which also provides rides for smaller markets like Moose Jaw, Estevan, Yorkton and Swift Current. Pricing has been simplified and made to be more affordable for 2025. Sherwood Co-op will have general admission for $16, including all taxes and fees. A family and friends pack (four passes) will be $54 and a 'ride all day' pass will be $55. 'So, a really fantastic deal, great pricing for families. We want everyone to come and enjoy everything that QCX is,' event director Cathleen Betker said. Betker said advance tickets will be available online and through Sherwood Co-op in the near future. Music performances will be from Blue Rodeo, The Reklaws, The Glorious Sons, Sam Roberts Band, Bif Naked and Kim Mitchell. 'We are so excited about all of the programming that we've announced today and there's more to come so be sure to watch our social media for announcements on what's going to be popping up across the property during QCX,' Betker said. Betker also said people can look forward to a demolition derby and the return of the FullSend BMX show in the Brandt Centre, as well as all the family friendly programming people expect to see. More to come...

Canadian music icon Jim Cuddy performs surprise duet at U of S convocation
WATCH: Spring convocation at the University of Saskatchewan went off with an unexpected surprise — Blue Rodeo's Jim Cuddy performed a duet with the university president. Sorry, we're having trouble with this video. Please try again later. [5006/404] Nearly 4,000 University of Saskatchewan (U of S) students will receive their diplomas throughout the week, and those who convocated on Tuesday were treated to a musical surprise. Alongside honorary doctor of letters recipient and Blue Rodeo frontman, Jim Cuddy, the president took part in a musical performance for the graduates. 'I think it will be rather unusual for them to see the president get up and try to strum the guitar. So, I think it'll be kind of fun. It'll be a little historic moment at the University of Saskatchewan,' said Peter Stoicheff, U of S president. Stoicheff and Cuddy have been friends for many years, and while the musician has done countless performances throughout his career, this was something different. 'That makes it a bonus. I can't imagine just doing it cold, like, just having somebody say, come on over and do it ... the whole thing is very special,' Cuddy said. Cuddy is one of three recipients to receive this title thanks to the U of S. President Stoicheff described the honorary degree as the highest honour the U of S can bestow. 'Bestowing it on Jim Cuddy, who's had a fantastic career with Blue Rodeo and a fantastic career with his own band and is one of Canada's greatest songwriters of all time, was a real privilege,' Stoicheff said. (Hallee Mandryk / CTV News) While Cuddy initially graduated from Queens University, he shared that Saskatoon has a special place in his heart. 'It's a huge honor .... I think it's a beautiful university. It's funny that I probably came here for 20 years before I even saw the university. And when I first saw the university, I was shocked at how beautiful it was,' Cuddy said. 'It's sort of fun for me to just hear the names of the people embarking on the rest of their lives, having truly no idea what they're about to encounter,' Cuddy said. The musician, who some may remember for his show-stopping ascending falsetto in the 1987 Blue Rodeo single 'Try,' says that performing in Saskatoon over the years has always been something he looks forward to. 'I think that there's a shared feeling about Saskatoon among especially musicians that come through here because it's very cold ... but it's very sunny,' Cuddy said. It's a special day for many families. But for husband and wife, Debasish Chakroborti and Sristy Sumana Nath, the day is extra special. The duo both received their PhDs on Tuesday. 'It feels great to be graduated, but when you are doing it with your family members, like my wife, my Sristy, we're doing it together, so I'm feeling really great,' Chakroborti said. (Hallee Mandryk / CTV News) After originally joining the university as an international student in 2017, Nath says she is proud to be setting an example for her children. 'Education is very important and we're both graduating together. And [my daughter] she's looking at how we're both graduating together and she's very excited and wanting to do more studies and contribute here in Canada, and the world,' Nath said.
