Expedition to ‘real home of the pirates of the Caribbean' hopes to unearth ships and treasure
The Pirates of the Caribbean is a $4.5bn swashbuckling film franchise and Blackbeard and Calico Jack Rackham are among marauding buccaneers who have captured imaginations over the centuries. But almost nothing is known about the life and times of actual pirates. Now a leading British marine archaeologist is co-directing an expedition that has been allowed for the first time to search for pirate ships off Nassau on the island of New Providence, a notorious pirate hideout 300 years ago. No one has until now explored the seabed for their ships and treasure, let alone everyday belongings that could be as valuable to historical research as a stash of emeralds, Dr Sean Kingsley said. 'The potential is enormous,' he added. 'We are expecting to find some really cool stuff because this is the real home of the pirates of the Caribbean. 'Pirates didn't keep journals listing their lawlessness. What happened in Nassau stayed in Nassau. If we want to discover the truth, we're going to have to dive for it.' The Bahamas was a major crossroads for trade and more than 500 ships have been wrecked off New Providence since the 1680s, according to historical sources. But there may be dozens more, with pirate ships among them. In 1718, when Woodes Rogers sailed to Nassau to become its governor, he noted 40 seized ships on the shore that had been 'either burnt or sunk' to destroy evidence and 'about 700 pirates'. In 1696, the privateer Henry Avery sailed to Nassau in his ship, the Fancy, laden with loot. He used some of the treasure to bribe the governor of the Bahamas, establishing Nassau as a base for fellow pirates. Top of the most-wanted hitlist of shipwrecks is the Fancy, a 46-gun flagship. Kingsley said: 'Avery of Plymouth lit the fuse and threw the grenade that started the golden age of piracy after looting a Mughal treasure ship of $108m off India. He then sailed to Nassau in 1696 to lie low, party and for the crew to break up with their cut of the booty. Avery scuttled the Fancy in Nassau. It's the crown jewels of pirate ships. If we were to find anything associated with it, it would be spectacular. Its plunder was the greatest and most successful pirate heist on the high seas.' The New Providence Pirates Expedition – which is dedicated to science, education, entertainment and tourism in the Bahamas – is drawing on historical and archaeological evidence to conduct the first underwater survey, which begins in September. The project has secured the first-ever agreement with the Antiquities, Monuments and Museums Corporation of the Bahamas, a partner collaborator. Kingsley has explored more than 350 shipwrecks in the last 30 years and is the founding editor of Wreckwatch, the world's only magazine dedicated to the sunken past. The affiliated Wreckwatch TV is collaborating with the New Providence Pirates Expedition to bring 'the history, ruined landscape and sea dogs of the golden age of piracy between 1696 and 1730 back to life' through a documentary film, The Mystery of the Pirate King's Treasure. The film's co-director, Chris Atkins, said: 'The Bahamas, with its azure waters and crystal-clear underwater visibility, is a film-maker's dream. For the first time in history, viewers are going to see with their own eyes the places where Blackbeard and gang terrorised the Americas. Somewhere out there are the wine bottles they partied with, the tobacco pipes they smoked, the pieces of eight carelessly lost and so much more. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to get up close and personal with the real pirates of the Caribbean.' Asked how they will identify pirate shipwrecks, Kingsley said: 'Generally, if you find a Dutch, English or French shipwreck, it has a very specific type of material culture on it. If it's Spanish, it will have olive jars, a good marker. If it's British, it may have Bristol or London tobacco pipes, for instance. On a pirate wreck, you will find French, English and Dutch ceramics and a mix of coins, anything from Arabian to British, and weapons such as stinkpots, explosive weapons used by pirates.' Dr Michael Pateman, the expedition's co-director and the ambassador for history, culture and museology in the Bahamas, said: 'This is the first project to reconstruct the port and landscape where Blackbeard, Calico Jack Rackham, Anne Bonny and the rest of the notorious Flying Gang were based. Anything could still be down there.'

Constructing today's grid was an especially ambitious challenge for me because of those 15-letter bonus entries at 3- and 10-Down. One of my favorite aspects of USA Today puzzles is that grid designs don't have to follow rotational symmetry, giving constructors the flexibility to make more creative choices. I'd also like to give a shout-out to 33-Down, a resource I often use when hunting for fresh new clues! MARCH (9D: Hinamatsuri's month) Hinamatsuri is a Japanese holiday that is also known as Doll's Day or Girls' Day. It is celebrated each year on March 3 and celebrates the health and happiness of young girls and women. The observance of Hinamatsuri includes a display of dolls on a multitiered, red-carpeted platform. TARYN (27D: Body positivity activist Brumfitt) TARYN Brumfitt is a writer, speaker, filmmaker, and body positivity advocate. She is the founder of Body Image Movement, an organization that teaches people to love and appreciate their bodies. In 2023, TARYN Brumfitt was named Australian of the Year. COCA (30D: Mate de ___ (herbal tea)) Mate de COCA, also known as COCA tea, is an herbal drink made using the leaves of the COCA plant. The COCA plant contains alkaloids from which cocaine is derived. Although a cup of mate de COCA contains a low amount of the alkaloid, it is enough to cause a positive result on a drug test for cocaine. Mate de COCA is currently illegal in the United States unless it has been decocainized. KFC (1A: Raising Cane's competitor) Like its competitor KFC, Raising Cane is a restaurant specializing in chicken. Raising Cane's specific specialty is chicken fingers. The company was founded in 1996 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It is named after the dog of one of the founders. RHEA (15A: Actress Seehorn) RHEA Seehorn played the role of attorney Kim Wexler on the TV Series, Better Call Saul (2015-2022), a spin-off of and prequel to Breaking Bad (2008-2013). PICTURE BOOK (58A: "Boys Don't Fry" or "Pete's a Pizza") Boys Don't Fry is a PICTURE BOOK by Kimberly Lee, illustrated by Charlene Chua. It tells the story of a Malaysian boy who wants to help prepare the Lunar New Year feast. Pete's a Pizza is a PICTURE BOOK written and illustrated by William Stieg. It tells about a boy (named Pete, of course) whose father "turns him into a pizza" to help him overcome the disappointment of cancelled plans. I'm a fan of PICTURE BOOKs and I appreciate the use of specific examples in this clue. EAR (64A: Body part with a tragus) The tragus is part of the external EAR. It is a small pointed prominence that projects backward, helping to collect sounds from behind. If you put your finger on your cheek and let it travel back towards your ear, you will discover your tragus; the little part that sticks up slightly and is located above your earlobe. TESLA (66A: Inventor Nikola) Nikola TESLA (1856-1943) was an inventor and engineer known for his contributions to the design of modern electricity supply systems and alternating current. One of Nikola TESLA's inventions was the TESLA coil, an electrical resonant transformer circuit. TESLA invented the coil in 1891. Although they've been used in a variety of applications, today the main use of TESLA coils are for entertainment and educational purposes. Tesla coils can even be used to play music. The Golden Bachelorette features a bachelorette and contestants who are older than those seen on its counterpart The Bachelorette. WIKIPEDIA (33D: Web resource with a "List of lists of lists" page) I'm always happy to see WIKIPEDIA highlighted, as it's a resource I, like Jared, am extremely grateful for. WIKIPEDIA's "List of lists of lists" page is a fun one to check out. As the name suggests, the page is a list of other WIKIPEDIA pages that contain lists of other lists. One could spend a lot of time digging into the links on this WIKIPEDIA page. (I don't have any personal experience of that, of course...) Dolly Parton opens Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show
PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WMBB) – After a year and a half of construction, Pirates Voyage Dinner and Show is now open in Panama City Beach. This is their biggest of Dolly Parton's 3-Pirates Voyage attractions, with seating for more than 1,000 people. Parton says she thought Panama City Beach was the perfect place to open a new location. 'We know this is a great vacation spot and this is a wonderful place to come have supper because kids will be hungry after that, maybe they'll sleep good too after they had a good meal and been entertained,' Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show Founder Dolly Parton said. Pirates Voyage will host up to four shows a day, where performers battle each other on a stage that consists of floating pirate ships. Buccaneer Bay Lagoon is where the action takes place. Pirates from the sapphire and crimson teams battle each other across the stage. They are joined by Captain Blackbeard and Salty the Sea Lion. Visit PCB celebrates Tourism Appreciation Day with Pirates Voyage The shows include audience participation. 'You'll pick your side, and then we'll have competitions to see who is going to win Davy Jones's treasure,' Captain Blackbeard said. And everyone gets involved. 'Even your server, who is bringing you the fabulous four-course feast, gets involved in the show. Still kind of have to watch and see what your server is doing when they're part of Blackbeard's crew,' Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show PR Manager Ellen Liston said. The attraction has already created 300 jobs in the area. Parton says performers come from all over to be a part of the show. 'We literally have folks from all over the country, as a matter of fact, all over the world. And they kind of keep track of people that do these kinds of things. So we're just so proud to have all these great performers, and they are so talented,' Parton added. Pirates Voyage added another show that will start at 8:30 on Thursday night. Cruise lines have their own private islands for guests to enjoy - take a look at four seriously bucket list-worthy destinations you'll want on your radar The appeal of cruise holidays has traditionally focused on visiting a wide variety of places. But an increasing number of firms are choosing to drop anchor at exclusive destinations in idyllic locations. Private island stops are becoming a highlight of itineraries, with big players investing heavily in castaway cays reserved for their guests. Holland America Line, part of the Carnival Group, recently revealed a revamp of their popular Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas. A new pier will allow more ships to dock at the destination – soon to be named RelaxAway island, hinting at the investment planned for more laid back leisure facilities. Other lines have equally big ideas. Expanding beyond The Bahamas – where most island escapes have been based to date – Royal Caribbean is hoping to develop a new Perfect Day project in Mexico (due to open in 2027), while MSC has announced plans for an Abu Dhabi private island experience in the Middle East. And why not? – discovering a secret island is, after all, the stuff of childhood dreams. Here are some of the fantasy islands where it's already possible to set sail. Great Stirrup Cay, The Bahamas In 1977, this was the first island to be bought by a company solely for their guests. Norwegian Cruise Line has built a resort with bars and restaurants over the years and there are still more developments to come in the 268-acre tropical oasis. You can book guided snorkelling tours around a marine sanctuary, or rent equipment for parasailing, kayaking, paddleboarding and jet skiing. For families, there's an aqua park with inflatable water obstacles. Labadee, Haiti Royal Caribbean has invested in a private patch of a peninsula on the northern coast of Cuba's neighbour, Haiti. Set against plunging coastal cliffs, a choice of beaches ranges from the peaceful Columbus Cove to the livelier Adrenaline Beach. For thrill-seekers, there's a chance to jump on a roller coaster or try the world's longest overwater zip line. Unlike many private locations, interactions with local communities are possible at an artisan market and a cultural programme highlighting Haitian history and traditions is in the works. Despite its popularity, the edgy destination is marred by unrest. Recently, stops were temporarily suspended due to 'an abundance of caution' although it's hoped they will resume in the future. Castaway Cay, The Bahamas Around 30 miles north of NCL's private paradise is Disney's answer to a magical far-flung tropical kingdom. Although there are currently no Pirates of the Caribbean in this Atlantic cay, secluded coves were once used by the likes of Blackbeard in the 18th century. During the US Prohibition, the island served as a smuggling base and in the 1970s its airstrips were used by drug runners. A £18.5million investment transformed it in the mid-1990s, including a channel allowing ships to dock. Expect themed environments and areas dedicated to different age groups, including the adults-only Serenity Bay. Amber Cove, Dominican Republic Carnival Corporation invested £63million to develop this site near Puerto Plata on the Dominican Republic's northern coast. Princess Cruises and Holland America guests can visit, following in the footsteps of Christopher Columbus who landed here in 1492. Extending from a hillside, zip lines traverse the port complex and there's a 25,000 square-foot pool area with a swim-up bar, water slides, and private cabanas. The island is part of the mainland, but the private area has a big advantage over island escapes when it comes to exploring and interacting with communities.
