ISB@75 Chess Championship begins with grand opening and record participation
The ISB@75 Chess Championship, organised to mark the Platinum Jubilee of The Indian School Bahrain (ISB), kicked off yesterday with a grand opening ceremony at the Jashanmal Auditorium, Isa Town Campus. The two-day event is held under the patronage of the Bahrain Chess Federation and in collaboration with Arjun's Chess Academy (ACA). The event was inaugurated by Bahrain Chess Federation President Anmar Ibrahim Ahmadi, who attended as the Chief Guest. Also present were ISB Chairman Adv. Binu Mannil Varughese, Vice-Chairman and Member – HSSE & Sports Dr. Mohammed Faizal, Member – Transport Mohammad Nayaz Ullah, Principal VR Palaniswamy, ISB Platinum Jubilee General Convener Prince S. Natarajan, Vice-Principal (Senior School & Academic Administration) G. Satheesh, ACA CEO Arjun Kakkadath, Staff Representative Parvathi Devadas, Physical Education teachers, and community leaders. The championship opened with a Free Chess Workshop, accessible to students and enthusiasts across Bahrain. The session was led by expert coach Janelle Dela Cerna. With nearly 250 players and 60 school teams registered, the ISB@75 Championship is shaping up to be one of the largest chess tournaments ever held in Bahrain. The Interschool Team Chess Championship began this morning, featuring school teams competing in Under-12 and Under-19 categories. Schools are permitted to field multiple four-member teams, with matches played under FIDE Rapid Rules using the Swiss League format. Trophies and certificates will be awarded to the top three teams in each category. Later in the day, the Open Rapid Chess Tournament welcomed players of all ages. Prizes will be distributed across several categories, with special honours for the top 10 performers. All matches are being conducted in line with official FIDE regulations. The championship will conclude with a grand finale scheduled for 8:00 PM tonight.

m As part of its Platinum Jubilee celebrations marking 75 years of educational excellence, The Indian School Bahrain (ISB) is set to host a prestigious two-day chess event: the ISB@75 Chess Championship. The championship will take place on June 19 and 20, 2025, at the Jashanmal Auditorium, Isa Town Campus. Organised under the patronage of the Bahrain Chess Federation and in association with Arjun's Chess Academy (ACA), the championship aims to foster the intellectual spirit of chess while commemorating the school's long-standing commitment to academic and holistic development. The event will kick off on Thursday, June 19, with a free Chess Workshop open to all students and parents. Scheduled from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM, this session will be led by expert coaches from Arjun's Chess Academy. It promises an engaging introduction to the fundamentals of chess, a discussion on its benefits for cognitive development, and practical strategies for nurturing chess learning at home. The focus will shift to competitive play on Friday, June 20. The Interschool Team Chess Championship will begin at 9:00 AM, featuring two categories: Under 12 and Under 19. Schools are invited to field multiple four-member teams, with no entry fee for this segment. All matches will adhere to FIDE Rapid Rules and be conducted in a Swiss league format. Trophies and certificates will be awarded to the top three teams in each category. The celebration of strategy and skill will culminate in an Open Rapid Chess Tournament commencing at 3:00 PM on the same day. This segment is open to chess players of all age groups and will consist of seven rounds of play, with a time control of 10 minutes plus 3 seconds per move. A nominal entry fee of 2 BD per player applies for the Open Rapid Chess. Attractive prizes will be awarded across various categories, and the top 10 players will receive special recognition. All rounds will be conducted in accordance with FIDE guidelines. The last date for registration for all categories is June 18, 2025. ISB honours young achievers for Classes IV and V
The Indian School Bahrain (ISB) hosted its Annual Academic Awards Ceremony on Thursday for Classes IV and V, celebrating the scholastic accomplishments of students during the academic year 2024- 2025. The occasion was graced by ISB Hon. Chairman Adv. Binu Mannil Varughese, Hon. Secretary V. Rajapandian, Hon. Vice-Chairman & Hon. Member HSSE and Sports Dr. Mohammed Faizal, Hon. and Member-Academics Ranjini Mohan, Hon. Member-Projects and Maintenance Mithun Mohan, Principal VR Palaniswamy, Junior Wing Principal Pamela Xavier, Senior School and Academic Administration Vice-Principal G. Satheesh, Middle Section Vice-Principal Jose Thomas, Junior Wing Vice-Principal Priya Laji and Staff Representative Parvathi Devadas. The programme commenced with the National Anthems of Bahrain and India. This was followed by the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran by student Fatima Filzah Rukuddin of Class IV-G. Hon. Binu Mannil commended the teachers for their unwavering commitment and instrumental role in the students' academic achievements. He congratulated the awardees for their exemplary performance and acknowledged the efforts of all students who received 'A1 Grade' certificates for their diligence and consistency. He also extended heartfelt appreciation to the parents for their steadfast support and partnership in nurturing discipline and academic responsibility among students. Earlier the programme began with the school prayer, followed by an invocation dance performed gracefully by students from Classes IV and V. A highlight of the ceremony was the distribution of A1 Certificates to the meritorious students of Classes IV and V. ISB hosts major badminton event
The Indian School Bahrain (ISB) wrapped up its ISB @ 75 Junior and Senior Open Badminton Tournament in style on Saturday at its Isa Town campus. The five-day competition was part of the school's Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The event brought together players from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, making it one of the largest badminton tournaments ever held in the Kingdom. Over 400 matches were played under Badminton World Federation rules, with certified umpires officiating. Competitive spirit on display In the elite Men's Doubles category, Michael Otega Onwe and Muhammad Ashik PS secured victory, while Mohammed Obaid and Ali Ahmed Obaid finished as runners-up. Matches spanned numerous age groups and categories, showcasing the depth of talent across the region. The valedictory function was attended by National Trading House Managing Director Dileep C Thaker and Bahrain National Badminton Team Coach Ahmed Al Jallad. ISB Chairman Adv Binu Mannil Varughese, Secretary V Rajapandian, Principal VR Palaniswamy and other senior school officials and committee members also joined the event. Celebrating achievement Principal VR Palaniswamy welcomed attendee sand praised the players for their sportsmanship. Felicitation speeches from Adv Binu Mannil Varughese and Jubilee Committee Convener Prince S Natarajan acknowledged the hard work of the participants and organisers. The competition saw players as young as under-9 and up to the elite categories compete fiercely in singles and doubles events. Winners across 33 categories were recognised, from junior divisions through to master's and mixed doubles competitions. A memorable sporting occasion The tournament concluded with thanks extended to sponsors, participants and volunteers. ISB Launches Major Badminton Tournament
The Indian School Bahrain (ISB) launched one of the Kingdom's largest badminton tournaments on Tuesday, drawing over 350 players from across Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait as part of its Platinum Jubilee celebrations. A total of 65 matches were held on the opening day of the five-day ISB @ 75 Junior & Senior Open Badminton Tournament, hosted at the school's Isa Town campus in its newly renovated Jashanmal Auditorium. The facility now features four international-standard courts with impact-resistant PVC flooring and professional lighting. Wider Participation More than 400 matches are scheduled through to the finals on Saturday, with events spanning 39 categories, including Boys' and Girls' Singles and Doubles from U9 to U19, Men's and Women's Doubles across various skill levels, and Mixed Doubles. All matches are knockout-style and conducted in line with Badminton World Federation (BWF) rules under the supervision of certified umpires. Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded to winners in each category, while every participant will receive a digital certificate. Strong Backing The tournament, supported by the Bahrain Badminton and Squash Federation (BBSF), was officially opened by ISB Hon. Chairman Adv. Binu Mannil Varughese in the presence of top school officials and sports dignitaries, including National Trading House MD Dileep C Thaker, Bahrain national coach Ahmed Al Jallad, and Tournament Director Binu Pappachan. The event is sponsored by National Trading House WLL and continues ISB's long tradition of promoting sports as a cornerstone of student development and community engagement. ISB Principal VR Palaniswamy and Jubilee General Convener Prince S. Natarajan invited the public to attend the matches throughout the week and join in commemorating the school's 75th year through sport.
