Falcons offseason will include plenty of golf, including a QB working on a ‘horrible' game
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Atlanta offensive coordinator Zac Robinson has been 'addicted' to golf since his father introduced him to the game as a 5-year-old. Now, he's starting to see the same signs in his quarterback. 'Mike (Penix Jr.) is at the point where it seems like he is addicted,' Robinson said. Advertisement Robinson played for four NFL teams and spent five years as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Rams before coming to Atlanta in 2024, and no team he's been on has more golfers — or wannabe golfers — than the Falcons, he said. Penix, who was drafted eighth in 2024 and took over Atlanta's starting job at the end of last season, noticed the same thing when he arrived and decided he needed to pick up the game to fit in. His game is a work in progress. 'I started about a year ago and I try to go at least once a week,' Penix said. 'Yesterday was terrible; don't ask about yesterday. Yesterday was bad. It was bad. I don't even want to tell y'all, but there are a lot of guys that play. We bond like that. Safe sport, fun sport.' Penix is on the hunt for an instructor this offseason, he said. 'Whenever I'm done playing (football), I feel like I might want to play, so I need to learn now,' he said. Falcons running back Bijan Robinson was happy to hear Penix acknowledge his game has a long way to go. 'That's a big step because around me, he talks like he's the coldest player in the world,' Bijan Robinson said. 'Mike Penix is horrible.' The second-year quarterback does have potential, though. 'I've played with him before and when he gets ahold of it, obviously it can go a long way,' Zac Robinson said of Penix. 'Golf is the toughest sport to master, and he's right in the thick of learning the game.' Zac Robinson isn't upset Penix is moonlighting in another sport. 'You can never fully master golf. It feels very similar to football,' Zac Robinson said. 'There is never a stopping point. There's always something you can work on. I like it from the aspect of competing with yourself. It's a different thing than being in a team sport.' The Falcons have a group chat that includes '25 or so guys' where players post any tee times they have with an open spot. 'They're saying, 'Need two, we're playing at The River Club.' It's, boom, 'I'm in, I'm in,'' Zac Robinson said. Tight end Kyle Pitts, center Ryan Neuzil, place kicker Younghoe Koo, offensive lineman Matthew Cindric and wide receivers Jesse Matthews and Dylan Drummond are among the regulars in the rotation. Pitts recently shot a 37 on the back nine of a round he played with Penix, the quarterback said. Neuzil said Matthews 'is probably the best player overall.' Advertisement Bijan Robinson is not part of the golfing group — 'absolutely not, absolutely not,' he said — but is an appreciator of the game through his friendship with Scottie Scheffler, a fellow University of Texas alum and the No. 1 player in the world. 'I'm going to try to get some lessons soon, hopefully in the next couple weeks,' he said. 'These guys are becoming really good, so I need to step it up.' Bijan Robinson interested in playing in the Olympics but says flag football is different game
The NFL will allow its players to participate in flag football in the 2028 Olympics, and several have publicly expressed interest. Count Falcons running back Bijan Robinson among those. 'I feel like it's always an honor to play for your country,' Robinson said, via video from Cory Muse of KVUE. 'Like, you always want to play for your country. I would love to show my skillset on that type of stage. 'So, I think it's going to come down to our schedule and where it lies, and if the teams even let us go. But I would love to play if given the opportunity. We'll see. I don't want it to affect my team and what we've got going here.' Robinson grew up playing flag football in the offseason, participating in Texas' 7-on-7 competitions every summer. He agrees with current flag football players, including star Darrell Doucette III, that flag football isn't the same as tackle football. 'Obviously, there's a lot of great flag football players out here, and that's all that they play, and they're very specific in the game,' Robinson said. 'Like you have guys who can be running with the football, and they can get this low to the ground and not get touched. No NFL player is doing that, or trying to do that at least.' The flag football competition is scheduled for July 14-21, 2028, which is a week before most veteran reporting dates for training camp. Robinson will be 26 in 2028.

Former Longhorn wants to 'Play for my country' in next Olympics
Former Longhorn wants to 'Play for my country' in next Olympics The NFL says it will allow players to participate in the 7-on-7 flag football event at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Former Texas Longhorns running back Bijan Robinson wants to play for Team USA. The Falcons star RB grew up playing flag football in the offseason during high school in several elite events, including being named the RB MVP at the 2019 Rivals Five-Star Challenge. Robinson also took part in Texas' 7-on-7 competitions every summer on the 40 Acres. "I would love to play if given the opportunity. We'll see. I don't want it to affect my team and what we've got going here," Robinson said Monday on ABC KVUE-TV in Austin. But the Arizona native knows flag football specialists, like star Darrell Doucette III, may have a leg up on players in the NFL. "Obviously, there's a lot of great flag football players out here, and that's all that they play, and they're very specific in the game," Robinson said. "Like you have guys who can be running with the football, and they can get this low to the ground and not get touched. No NFL player is doing that, or trying to do that at least." Mostly, Robinson just really wants to play for his country. "I feel like it's always an honor to play for your country," Robinson said. "Like, you always want to play for your country. I would love to show my skillset on that type of stage."

Bijan Robinson Makes Announcement on 2028 Los Angeles Olympics
Bijan Robinson Makes Announcement on 2028 Los Angeles Olympics originally appeared on Athlon Sports. For the first time in the historic sporting event's history, flag football will be a part of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Advertisement In addition to flag football joining sports such as baseball/softball, cricket, lacrosse and squash as the new sports being added, the other exciting news around the flag football aspect is that NFL players were given the stamp of approval to play by the owners in a 32-0 vote back in May. While many fans have begun speculating who will or won't play, some notable stars have seemingly made decisions already. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and three-time Super Bowl champion, Patrick Mahomes, seemed to have passed on the opportunity. Meanwhile, four-time All-Pro receiver Justin Jefferson made it clear he hopes to rep the Stars and Stripes. On Monday, former Texas Longhorns star and current Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson revealed that he would be interested in playing. "I think it's awesome," Robinson told the media. "All it does is grow the game a lot. I think for me like, I grew up playing flag football and that was my offseason game was flag and 7-on-7. So, you know I feel like it's always an honor to play for your country, like you always wanna play for your country. And I would love to show my skill set on that type of stage." Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson staring at the Hartline-Imagn Images While Robinson admitted he would like to play, he did acknowledge that there are athletes out there who specialize in the sport. He also said that scheduling will play a major role in whether he and other NFL stars can play, along with the NFL teams actually allowing players to play in them. Advertisement Regardless, he doubled down on wanting to play. "I would love to play in that game if given the opportunity," Robinson said. "But obviously, we'll see. I don't want it to affect my team and what we got going on here." This past season, Robinson rushed for 1,456 yards and 14 touchdowns, while also adding 61 catches for 431 yards and a score. Assuming the 23-year-old is healthy when the Olympics roll around, it's hard to imagine there is a more shifty and elusive option than him.
