Dacia's secrets to success: how it makes its cars so cheap

Renault Triber And Kiger Facelift Seen Testing, Revealing New Design Details
Renault is gearing up to diversify its product portfolio for the Indian market. The French automaker has previously stated its plans to roll out the Renault Duster facelift and Bigster in the Indian market. According to reports, the brand is likely to introduce the hybrid iterations of the Duster and Bigster after the launch of its ICE powertrains. Recently, the test mules of the 2026 Renault Kiger and Triber have been spotted. Though the test mules were heavily camouflaged, it revealed new design elements of the cars. 2026 Renault Kiger Facelift: Design, Powertrain Expected The 2026 Renault Kiger seems to carry the same design as the current model on sale. However, it does get a few design tweaks on the front. The test mule suggests that the 2026 iteration of the Kiger will get a larger grille in the center, and the brand has also equipped a smaller grille that will carry the brand's logo. It will also get streamlined LED DRLs and a flat bonnet shutline. The test mule also had newly designed wheels. The interior design and features of the 2026 Kiger are yet to be revealed. However, it is likely to carry forward the same engine options offered in the current model- a 1.0-liter NA petrol, a 1.0-liter turbo petrol, and a CNG engine (available as options). 2026 Renault Triber Facelift: Design, Powertrain Expected The 2026 Renault Triber will retain most of the exterior elements from the model currently on sale. However, the spy shots suggest a few design tweaks that you can expect on the upcoming model. It will get a refreshed grille design, newly designed bumpers, and a headlight on the front. Also, the square-shaped rear lights seen on the test mule give it an aggressive look. Talking about the powertrain, the current iteration of the Triber gets a 1.0-liter NA petrol engine, which is likely to be carried forward to the 2026 model as well. More details about the exterior and the interior of the 2026 Triber facelift will be unveiled as the launch date gets closer.

Renault Duster and Bigster: Launch and more details of Renault's comeback cars in India
Renault was the one company that created the mid-size SUV in India with the Renault Duster. While it was a runaway success, the Duster faded out as it never got the upgrade it needed to tackle competition like the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos, among other SUVs. Quite obviously, sales declined, and eventually the Duster went off the showroom floor. Ever since then, the company has been banking on models like the Renault Kwid, Renault Kiger and the Renault Triber. But quite simply, that is not going to be enough for the company. They need a powerhouse product. They need the Duster and more to be back, and that is exactly what the company is all set to do. Both the Duster and the Bigster will share the same CMF-B platform. advertisementAt the recent inauguration of their new design studio in Chennai, the company confirmed that alongside the Duster, Renault has ambitious plans to launch five new vehicles in the next two years, including an electric vehicle designed for both Indian and global markets. So the Duster with be the first to be re-launched, and it will be followed by a seven-seater variant of the same in a few months. Something like what Hyundai offers with the Hyundai Creta and the Hyundai Alcazar. But let's delve into the details of these SUVs and see what they promise to Duster: What to expect? The new Duster features a modern look but still retains the rugged design DNA. advertisementThe new-generation Duster is an all-new SUV, and as a result, it is based on a new CMF-B platform that will also underpin the larger 7-seat version of the SUV. On the CMF-B platform, the All-New Duster has more space for passengers and luggage than the previous generation, while maintaining the same overall length of 4,340mm. The new Duster features a modern look but still retains the rugged design DNA as seen in the older versions. Inside, the SUV will come with modern touches like a large infotainment system, a digital instrument panel and modern climate control system. Renault will also load the Duster with ADAS among a plethora of other safety features. When it comes to powertrains, the new Duster will come with petrol and diesel engines and CNG and mild-hybrid options are also said to be on cards. The CNG variants could very well be retrofit kits that would be done at dealership level as the company had done some time back with Kwid, Kiger and Triber. As for the specifications, the international model is offered with three engine options. This includes a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol mill, 1.2-litre petrol-hybrid, and a 1.6-litre Bigster: Details of the 7-seat variant While the Bigster is based on the same platform as the Duster, the SUV is longer than the Duster by 227mm. The Bigster has also been revealed internationally and there are speculations that it will be called the Boreal in India. Exclusive: Dacia CEO joins our podcast to preview brand's next steps
"We could take a Renault Australe and try and make it simpler to make a Dacia Bigster, but you would have all the spec still. We don't have an 'A' brand, and try and then make that car into a 'B' brand. "If you look at the Jogger against its rivals, they are all 250kg heavier as they are carrying that higher spec. This has a cost. "We're not rooted by a minimum spec. We come from the bottom up, and add the minimum technology we need. Rivals come from the top down as they have to platform share." Bigster market research The Bigster breaks new ground for Dacia in going into the C-segment for the first time. As part of its development, Dacia researchers went to Germany to speak to 400 owners of German SUVs to find out what they considered to be 'essential' technology for a model in the family SUV segment. That's what has led to the likes of a powered tailgate, a powered driver's seat and dual-zone air conditioning being offered on a Dacia for the first time. "We wanted to make sure that buyers here didn't feel like they had downgraded, to get the right level of essential kit. We really talked to people, and played a game of to buy or not to buy based on different kit. It was hard to guess! "We did a bit in the UK too but the 'codes' between German and British buyers are very similar. The proportion of buyers from Germany versus France is much higher than with our other models." The Bigster has had the most successful pre-sales period in Dacia history and more than four in five had never had a Dacia before. More than 90% of buyers have gone for the top trim level, too. "We need to make sure people 'cross the road' to come and check out Dacia. We have offered a €25,000 Bigster but most have bought a €30,000 one. They're happy and we're happy." Market positioning Dacia has more than doubled its sales over the last seven years from around 300,000 to almost 700,000 in 2024, and the brand enjoys strong loyalty with more than two thirds of buyers staying with the brand.

India-bound Dacia Bigster scores three stars in Euro NCAP crash tests
The Dacia Bigster was equipped with several safety features, including airbags, ISOFIX mounts, autonomous emergency braking, lane assist, driver attention warnings, and more. Notify me The Euro NCAP has recently published the crash test results for the Dacia Bigster. The India-bound SUV has scored a three-star safety rating, with an adult occupant safety score of 69 per cent and a child occupant safety score of 85 per cent. In vulnerable road uses, the Bigster scored 60 per cent, while in safety assist, its score was 57 per cent. The model that was tested was equipped with a HEV powertrain and was a left-hand drive model. The safety rating is applicable to all Dacia Bigster models that are available on sale. The safety features available on the Bigster model include airbags, ISOFIX mounts, seatbelt reminders, autonomous emergency braking, speed assistance, lane assist system, driver attention warnings, and more. Dummy measurements indicated effective protection for the knees and femurs of both the driver and front seat passenger. A similar level of protection is expected for occupants of different sizes and sitting in different positions. An analysis of the deceleration of the impact trolley during the test, alongside an examination of the deformable barrier after the test, indicates that the Bigster is relatively non-aggressive to other vehicles during a frontal collision.
