Sacramento State to join Big West in 2026, except for football
June 19 - Sacramento State will leave the Big Sky Conference to join the Big West Conference beginning with the 2026-27 academic year, the school announced this week. Sacramento State officials have sought a waiver for the Hornets' football program to leave the Football Championship Subdivision for the Football Bowl Subdivision. On Monday, the NCAA Football Oversight Committee delivered its recommendation that the Division I Council should not support the request. The council's formal decision has yet to be made. In the meantime, Sacramento State will move all its other sports, most notably men's and women's basketball, baseball and softball, to the Big West. The Hornets previously were an affiliate member of the Big West for baseball from 1996-2002. The rest of the conference includes California Baptist, Cal Poly, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Cal State Northridge (CSUN), UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and Utah Valley. The Big Sky will drop to nine members, mostly concentrated in Washington state, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. --Field Level Media

Sac State athletics to join Big West in all but football in 2026
Sacramento State athletics will be joining the Big West Conference effective July 1, 2026, in everything but football, sources confirmed to CBS Sacramento on Thursday. On Monday, the NCAA Football Oversight Committee recommended to the Division 1 Council not to support Sacramento State's waiver request to join the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest level of college football. Sacramento State currently plays in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The Hornets are still awaiting an official decision from the council on that waiver, which should come next week. If denied, sources say Sacramento State's short-term plan is to remain in the FCS as an independent. Sacramento State has been a member of the Big Sky Conference since 1996.

Thanatharn selected as new UH softball head coach
The University of Hawai'i has ushered in a new era in Rainbow Wahine softball, naming Panita Thanatharn as its next head coach, the school announced Wednesday, four weeks after the conclusion of the 2025 season. Thanatharn, a Long Beach State alumna, spent the past 14 seasons on staff with the 49ers, including the last nine as associate head coach. During her tenure, she helped lead LBSU to four Big West Conference championships and multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. She now takes the reins from legendary head coach Bob Coolen, who retired after 34 seasons at UH. Coolen leaves behind a storied legacy that includes more than 1,100 career wins, 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, and a trip to the Women's College World Series in 2010. Among the finalists for the position was longtime UH assistant coach Dee Wisneski. Key returnees for the 2026 season include standout players Milan Ah Yat and Carys Murakami, serving as a strong foundation as Thanatharn begins her tenure.
