Stormzy felt 'challenged' by Big Man role

Stormzy found it difficult to "totally separate" himself from his Big Man character. The 31-year-old star plays a rapper in his first lead role, and Stormzy admits that he struggled to distance himself from his movie character. The award-wining star - who plays Tenzman in the new film - told BBC Newsbeat: "It was really tough if I'm honest. "It felt like I'm playing a rapper but I am a rapper, it's tough to totally separate." Big Man is the first release from Stormzy's #MerkyFilm production company, and the rapper has revealed his long-term ambition for the enterprise. He shared: "What we've tried to do at Merky, whether it's music, sports, whatever, we do we just want to stand in our truth, tell our stories, but also not from the same perspective that it's always been told from. "Even being black British, it's such a nuanced experience – you've got the black experience, you've got the British experience, and then you've got the black British experience. "We want to tell it from our perspective which is nuanced, it's brilliant, it's different, it's not always the same, it's not a monolith." Stormzy felt "challenged" while making the movie, but he still enjoyed the creative process. The Vossi Bop hitmaker said: "It was really tough but it was a challenge I was so honoured to be a part of. "I like to be challenged, I like to be a bit uncomfortable so I love it." Stormzy previously explained that his acting debut was "all about the joy, spirit and fearless energy of youth". The rapper also hopes that the 24-minute short film will serve as a source of inspiration for aspiring stars. He said: "I hope you love our first project, Big Man, as much as we loved making it. 'For me, it's all about the joy, spirit and fearless energy of youth – that feeling like life is one big adventure and the world's your playground. "I hope it inspires you to dream bigger, live louder, and hold on to that unapologetic energy that comes with being young."

The film is about a rapper whose career is fading ACTING UP A STORMZ Inside Stormzy's VIP packed premiere as rapper secretly takes acting lessons ahead of big screen debut Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) WE know Stormzy can write a killer song, with 14 Top Ten hits – including four No1s – under his belt. And after he invited me to the premiere of his debut short film Big Man at London's British Film Institute, I'm happy to report he can act, too. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 9 Stormzy with mum Abigail Owuo at the film's premiere Credit: Getty What's more astonishing is that his 20-minute film, directed by Oscar-winner Aneil Karia, was improvised from start to finish. 'Stormzy had acting lessons for months before filming started,' a friend told me before the premiere. 'He doesn't do anything by halves.' Big Man, the first offering from his #Merky Films company, follows the story of Tenzman, a rapper whose career is fading — until a chance meeting with two young boys, Klevis and Tyrell, changes the course of his life. It has already had almost a million YouTube views in less than 24 hours. Arrogant Merky Films has been in the making for a long time, as Stormzy explained: 'We've been working on this for five years. We've done our due diligence. 'I think sometimes it's very arrogant to think that because you've got a profile elsewhere, you can just step into a space with all the bells and whistles. 'We didn't want to do that.' Stormzy is impressive in the leading role, and the tenderness he has towards young actors Jaydon Eastman and Klevis Brahja feels completely organic. Stormzy's US superstar ex breaks silence on dating star for first time since they were spotted snogging at airport 'They absolutely killed it,' Stormzy says, 'I was like a duck out of water. 'They made me feel comfortable and gave me confidence. I was the biggest amateur there.' Stormzy's not doing himself justice. Aneil, who won an Academy Award for Best Action Live Short Film, The Long Goodbye, in 2022, agrees, adding: 'Stormzy can act. When it came to improvisation, it was amazing.' The singer adds: 'I forgot that it was going to be improvised. I was like, 'Damn, there's no script.' which is crazy. 'It was challenging because I'm a rapper, trying to play a rapper, but I'm using my voice. It was like an episode of Black Mirror.' Stormzy, inset, is big on giving back, with his #Merky Foundation pledging millions to help young people in the UK. And this theme runs throughout Big Man, with Stormzy's fictional rapper initially scoffing at the two kids' dream of visiting Brighton — before realising how much that trip means to the young pair, who are enduring the monotony of life between school and care home. Don't get me wrong, this film isn't pushing an agenda. The messaging is an undercurrent that makes you think but it doesn't take away from the fact it is genuinely hilarious and heartwarming. Screams Thanks to the brilliant rising stars Jaydon and Klevis, the improvisation feels so natural and authentic — you can't help laughing out loud. In one scene, Stormzy — who towers over me at 6ft 5in — screams as he's riding a rollercoaster with the lads. But he's not hollering because he's afraid of heights. 'That rollercoaster is too small for me,' Stormzy admits with a laugh. 'My knees are literally banging against the thing. I'm screaming in pain.' Stormzy promises there is more to come. 'We've got a lot of things in development,' he explains. 'I just want people to feel something. To enjoy it in the most pure, sentimental way.' Big Man is available to watch now on YouTube and I promise it's well worth a viewing. Congratulations, Stormzy. Why Stormzy's New Movie Absolutely Had To Be Shot On iPhone

On Wednesday, June 18, Apple unveiled its latest Shot on iPhone movie, 'Big Man'. It is a short film starring Michael Omari, better known as music icon Stormzy in his first leading dramatic role, at a stylish and glitzy screening in London — you can also watch it on YouTube. Stormzy, Klevis Brahja, Jaydon Eastman, the main cast in "Big Man". It was shot entirely on a series of iPhone 16 Pro handsets, and the more you learn about the film, the more it made the use of the phone inevitable. The film is about Tenzman, a musician whose star has been on the decline for some years and an encounter with two teenage boys. The short film covers a lot of emotional distance in its roughly 20-minute length. A question-and answer session followed the premiere of the movie at BFI Southbank, at National Film Theatre 1, a gorgeously comfortable and effective cinema, as well as a prestigious location. Director Aneil Karia (himself already an Academy Award winner) talked about the improvisational nature of the film. On its own, that makes the tiny iPhone a better bet than the '30-kilogram' Hollywood movie cameras, as Karia put it. The iPhone was better to get up close and capture subtle moments without overwhelming the actors. Especially since two of the protagonists are teenage boys, both of whom are brilliant and utterly natural, by the way. A small, handheld iPhone is much less intimidating — though the array of around half a dozen iPhones positioned around the car that's the setting for much of the film might have been more noticeable. Stuart Bentley, Director of Photography, talked about the set-up, which for the most part was the iPhone in a handheld gimbal unit, with the addition of different extra lenses as needed to permit long tracking shots and so on. Even with these additions, the iPhone 16 Pro would have been much less intrusive than other cameras, allowing the director a more elegantly informal approach. Bentley also said, 'We're pushing the camera to the very limits of what it's capable of, and we've found it to be really resilient. And obviously it's tiny so you can get the camera into positions where you may not be able to get a traditional camera which has been really liberating for us and in ways that allow you to be really inventive and creative with your camera choices.' The movie is well worth seeing, from a dramatic perspective alone, but the use of the iPhone 16 Pro makes it a technical marvel as well.
