Country singer Conner Smith fatally hits woman with truck, police say

Country singer Conner Smith allegedly struck and killed a woman who was walking in a crosswalk in Nashville, authorities say. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said Smith, 24, was driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck on Sunday when a 77-year-old woman was crossing in the crosswalk. Police said the woman was struck around 7:30 p.m. The woman, identified as Dorothy Dobbins, was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she died. "The preliminary contributing factor for this crash appears to be Smith failing to yield the right of way to the pedestrian," Nashville police said in a statement. Police said Smith showed no signs of impairment and that there are no current charges as the investigation continues. Scooter Braun Chooses to See His Drama With Taylor Swift 'As a Gift'

After a 6-year battle with Scott Borchetta, Scooter Braun, Big Machine Label Group, and Shamrock Holdings to repurchase her music, Taylor Swift officially owns all her masters (as well as the Taylor's Version albums she's dropped over the years). While the Grammy winner has been vocal about the saga since 2019, Scooter Braun is now sharing his side of the story. During a recent appearance on the Diary of a CEO podcast, Scooter—who is known for once managing artists like Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, and Demi Lovato—got candid about his drama with Taylor and where he stands with it now. When his company, Ithaca Holdings, purchased Big Machine Label Group in 2019, Scooter shared that he was 'excited' to have the opportunity to work with Taylor, whom he had met less than a handful of times. 'I thought I was going to work with all the artists on Big Machine. I thought it was gonna be an exciting thing. I knew that Taylor — she and I had only met three times, I think in my life, three or four times — one of the times, it was years earlier, it was really a great engagement,' he explained. 'In between that time since I'd seen her last, I started managing Kanye West. I managed Justin Bieber,' he added. 'I knew she didn't get along with them. I had a feeling, this is where my arrogance came in. I had a feeling she probably didn't like me because I managed them. But I thought that once this announcement happened, she would talk to me, see who I am, and we would work together.' Scooter revealed that he asked the former owner of Big Machine Label Group, Scott Borchetta, for Taylor's number when they made the deal. As he made his way through the label's roster and called artists to connect with them, Taylor published a letter on Tumblr explaining that she hadn't been given a chance to repurchase her masters. 'I was just shocked,' Scooter shared. 'I don't need to go back into it, but what I can tell you is everything in life is a gift. Having that experience allows me to have empathy for the people I worked with who I would always say, 'Yeah, I understand.' But I never knew what it was like to be on the global stage like that. I never knew what criticism like that felt like.' He added, 'All the praise I had received up until that moment was not deserved. All the hate I got after that moment was not deserved, because none of these people knew me. The gift of pain was awareness.' As for where he stands with Taylor now? He claims he doesn't 'hold any hatred' for the pop culture icon. 'Everyone moves on,' he said. 'I choose to see it as a gift. I choose to see it as being able to have a perspective that very few people in the world have of knowing what that's like. Of feeling that on a global level.' Scooter's bombshell interview comes after Taylor revealed she bought her masters back with an emotional letter published on her website. 'To say this is my greatest dream come true is actually being pretty casual about it,' she wrote, in part. 'To my fans, you know how important this has been to me—so much so that I meticulously re-recorded and released four albums, calling them Taylor's Versions. The passionate support you showed those albums and the success you found giving The Eras Tour into why I was able to buy back my music. I can't thank you enough for helping to reunite me with this art that I have dedicated my life to, but never owned until now. All I've ever wanted was the opportunity to work hard enough to be able to one day purchase my music outright.'

Scooter Braun Shares How ‘Deeply Unfair' Backlash to Taylor Swift Feud Turned Out to Be a ‘Gift'

Now that Taylor Swift has bought back the masters to her first six albums, Scooter Braun is reflecting on his part in the yearslong back-and-forth he ignited by purchasing the singer's catalog from Scott Borchetta back in 2019. While speaking about the feud during an episode of The Diary of a CEO posted Monday (June 9), the music mogul began by sharing how he'd originally had high hopes for his relationship with the 'Fortnight' singer after he bought Big Machine Label Group from Borchetta for a reported $300 million six years ago, gaining ownership of Swift's back catalog in the process. Shortly afterward, the pop star shared a Tumblr post calling the sale her 'worst case scenario,' accusing Braun of 'incessant, manipulative bullying' over the years and including a screenshot of a post from Justin Bieber featuring Braun and Kanye West with the caption, 'Taylor swift what's up.' More from Billboard Taylor Swift & Scooter Braun's Feud: A Timeline Kylie Minogue Joins Prestigious '21 Club' at London's O2 Arena Kevin Parker Previews New Tame Impala Music During Barcelona DJ Set Braun says that he was 'shocked' when he read Swift's post. 'When I bought Big Machine, I thought I was going to work with all the artists on Big Machine,' Braun recalled on the podcast. '[Taylor] and I had only met three or four times. One of the times, it was years earlier, it was really a great engagement. She invited me to her party. We respected each other.' 'In between that time since I'd seen her last, I started managing Kanye West,' he continued. 'I managed Justin Bieber. I knew she didn't get along with them. This is where my arrogance came in. I had a feeling she probably didn't like me because I managed them, but I thought once this announcement happened, she'd talk to me, see who I am, and we'd work together. Then this Tumblr comes out, and it says all of this stuff, and I was just shocked.' The involved parties would spend the next few weeks disputing details of how the deal went down — including whether or not Swift found out about the purchase only as it was publicly announced, which she claimed in her post — with Braun later writing in an open letter of his own that he was 'disappointed' in the 14-time Grammy winner for having 'remained silent' despite his family receiving 'numerous death threats' amid the debacle. Swift would later announce plans to re-record her old albums, while the retired manager eventually sold her catalog again to Shamrock Holdings. 'I couldn't fix the relationship that I didn't have, but then I was able to figure out, 'You know what? We'll sell it,'' Braun said of selling to Shamrock on The Diary of a CEO. 'In the world of streaming, the re-records will only help the old catalog as much as they help the new catalog. Both will get a bump. I showed how everyone can be a winner here, and I was able to sell the catalog and — I don't want to go into too much detail, but it's now come out very factually that I did offer it [to Taylor] … multiple times in that process. They said no, I sold to someone else, washed my hands of it and moved on.' Swift has also previously addressed Braun's alleged offers to sell her catalog back to her, though she recalls it much differently. According to the 'Karma' artist, his team had asked her to sign a non-disclosure agreement before she could even 'bid on [her] own work.' 'He would never even quote my team a price,' Swift wrote in a post on X at the time. 'These master recordings were not for sale to me.' Billboard has reached out to Swift's rep for comment. In any case, the musician walked away from negotiations and hammered away at her Taylor's Version re-recording project, releasing highly successful new versions of Fearless, Speak Now, Red and 1989 between 2021 and 2023. Everything came full circle at the end of May 2025, when Swift announced that she'd finally been able to acquire her old catalog from Shamrock, about which Braun told Billboard at the time, 'I am happy for her.' On the podcast, Braun reiterated that he only hopes for the best for Swift. 'I can't worry about everyone's niece being mad at me,' he quipped. 'What I gotta do is show up for my niece, and I gotta show up for my friends and my family. I wish everyone involved, across the board, whether I know them or not, good wishes.' Even so, the businessman confessed that the fallout was hard on his mental health and personal life, especially as he was going through a tough time with then-wife Yael Cohen that would eventually lead to a divorce. 'When something happens to you that feels deeply unfair, and you can't fix it, then you've really got to look at everything and realize the role you played in this or that, who you want to be,' Braun said of his disagreement with Swift. 'Everything in life is a gift,' he added. 'Having that experience allows me to have empathy for people I worked with. I never knew what it was like to be on the global stage like that. I never knew what criticism like that felt like.' Watch Braun's full interview on The Diary of a CEO above. Scooter Braun claims Taylor Swift feud was a 'gift' in odd explanation

Scooter Braun has reflected on his dispute with Taylor Swift over master recordings, with his comments coming after the singer announced recently that she now owns all of her music Former talent manager Scooter Braun has reflected on buying Taylor Swift 's former record label six years ago. He's also discussed the aftermath of the purchase after being publicly criticised by the singer-songwriter. His new comments come after Taylor, 35, announced last month that she now owns "all of the music" that she's ever made. She had been releasing re-recorded versions of albums from earlier in her career following a dispute over her back catalogue. ‌ Scooter got the rights to Taylor's first six albums in 2019 when his company, Ithaca Holdings, bought Big Machine Label Group. Taylor had moved away from the record label, which reportedly owned the rights to her first six albums, the previous year, and it was later announced in 2020 that her master recordings had been sold to investment firm Shamrock Holdings. ‌ When Scooter's holding company, Ithaca Holdings, purchased Big Machine Label Group, Taylor said in a Tumblr post that she was "sad" and "grossed out". She also accused the now 43-year-old of being behind "incessant, manipulative bullying". As reported at the time, Scooter later said: "I don't do anything with malicious intent. [...] I try to do the right thing." Now reflecting on the situation, Scooter said on The Diary Of A CEO podcast, in an episode released on Monday: "When I bought Big Machine, I thought I was going to work with all the artists on Big Machine. I thought it was gonna be like an exciting thing." He continued: "[Taylor] and I had only met three times, I think, in my life, three or four times. And one of the times, it was years earlier, it was really a great engagement [...] we respected each other, we had a great engagement. In between that time, since I'd seen her last, I started managing Kanye West. I managed Justin Bieber. I knew she didn't get along with them. "I had a feeling – this is where my arrogance came in – I had a feeling she probably didn't like me because I managed them. But I thought that once this announcement happened, she would talk to me, see who I am, and we would work together. "And the announcement came out and I'm calling Scott Borchetta [chief executive of Big Machine Records] and saying, 'Hey, send me her number [...] and I just talked to this person and they're excited' [...] and then this Tumblr (post) comes out and says all this stuff. And I was just like, shocked." ‌ Scooter added: "It's been five, six years, I don't need to go back into it, but what I can tell you is everything in life is a gift. Having that experience allows me to have empathy for the people I worked with who I'd always say 'yeah I understand' but I never knew what it was like to be on the global stage like that. "I never knew what criticism like that felt like. And like I told you, the biggest gift that I got from that was understanding that all the praise I had received up until that moment was not deserved, and all the hate I got after that moment was not deserved, because none of these people knew me. She didn't know me. This person didn't know me." ‌ In 2019, Taylor announced she would re-record several of her albums in a bid to regain ownership of the masters. A master recording is the original recording of a song, and whoever owns it earns revenue through avenues including streaming and use in TV, film and adverts. To date, Taylor has released new versions of her previous albums Fearless (2008), Red (2012), Speak Now (2010) and 1989 (2014). Reputation and her self-titled debut, released in 2017 and 2006, are yet to be re-released as Taylor's Versions.
