Visitors complain of ‘poor' facilities at amusement park

Bhubaneswar: Visitors to BDA City Centre, formerly known as Nicco Park, have expressed dissatisfaction with the facility's deteriorating conditions despite an entry fee of Rs 100. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Once a bustling hub of entertainment, the park now leaves visitors disheartened, with many questioning the value of the entry fee given the subpar experience. The park, which previously boasted a variety of attractions, including a mini toy train, merry-go-round, caterpillar, tilt-a-whirl, moonraker and boating, now offers only three operational rides — the vortex ride, water coaster and striking car. The reduction in available attractions has left many visitors feeling short-changed. G Nikita, a resident, shared her disappointment after a recent visit. "We saw the photos of the park and facilities and went there to spend a good time. First they took Rs 700 for seven people, but the rides they provided were not up to the mark. The other city parks are way better," she claimed. Siddhant Kumar Barai, a corporate employee, said, "The worst part is the odour. The water coasters are in a dilapidated condition. The pond for boating also stinks." In response, the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) has announced plans for a comprehensive redevelopment of the park. The ambitious project, at an estimated budget of Rs 200 crore, will include the development of a 3.5-km stormwater channel and a lake zone along drainage channel 10 near Smart Janpath. BDA vice-chairman N Thirumala Naik said, "The issue was discussed recently at a high-level meeting and it was decided that an agency will be roped in for redevelopment of the park." Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A tender for the project is expected to be floated soon. Suprabha Dhal, from the park's operating team, attributed the decline in visitor numbers to damage from past cyclones and the impact of Covid-19 pandemic. "Earlier, the daily footfall used to be 5,000, but now there are not more than 200 visitors. The govt is planning a revamp of the park and will allocate funds for the purpose. We are hopeful the park will return to its earlier glory soon," Dhal said.

Bhubaneswar Development Authority firms up Rs 200 crore plan for Nicco Park, Lake Zone development

BHUBANESWAR: The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) has decided to develop the 3 km stretch of storm water channel 10 including BDA City Centre (earlier Nicco Park) and Lake Zone near Janpath into an ultramodern public recreational space at a cost of Rs 200 crore. BDA V-C N Thirumala Naik said the proposal has already received nod from the state government after CM Mohan Charan Majhi reviewed it last month. 'We will soon prepare the detailed project report and submit the cost estimate to the government for grant of funds,' Naik said. The BDA V-C said the project includes development of the area along natural drain no 10 in the stretch from BDA City Centre to the proposed Lake Zone on Janpath road. As per the discussions in the meeting chaired by the CM, the BDA City Centre will undergo comprehensive makeover and be equipped with a wide range of modern amenities. These include improved lighting, beautification, herbal garden, Ayurvedic park, pathway, foot overbridges, fine-dining restaurants and hotels etc. The first phase of the project will focus on redevelopment of the city centre, a senior official said. The project will also include restoration of the storm water channel near the Lake Neutral project of BSCL on Janpath Road near Satya Nagar which has been moving at a snail's pace since 2017. The project will include a waste water treatment plant, public realm with recreational space, plantation area and roadside gardens, he said.

Bhubaneswar: BDA initiates town planning scheme implementation in Dasapur and Malipada

BHUBANESWAR : Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) has initiated its town planning (TP) scheme implementation in Dasapur and Malipada areas, covering a total of 846 acres. This is TP scheme Nos. 5, 6 and 7, which fall in zone I of the BDA. The TP scheme implementation holds importance as BDA has already proposed to develop a Bhubaneswar New City in the same area, which will cover 400 hectares of land. As part of the initiation process, the BDA recently issued a request for proposal to select a firm that will aid the development authority in planning, designing and executing the TP scheme in Dasapur and Malipada. BDA officials said that the selected firm, with experience in planning, design and implementation of TP schemes, will be responsible for preparing designs as per the scope of work and assisting the BDA in planning, designing and implementing the schemes in this area. "We progressed a lot in the TP scheme implementation recently. This time, the focus remained on completing the three schemes in Dasapur and Malipada. We already held a public hearing event for the landowners of the area," vice chairman (BDA) N. Thirumala Naik said. Last Dec, BDA initiated the town planning scheme implementation in Zone IV, covering 14 schemes in the Dhauli and Tamando areas. The entire 14 schemes in this stretch cover a total of 2,496 acres of land. The BDA has divided the city into four zones and is implementing a total of 45 TP schemes covering 58 revenue villages. The BDA has planned to acquire the required land for the ambitious inner ring road project from the areas under the TP scheme. Under the TP Scheme framework, landowners contributed 40% of their land for infrastructure development while retaining 60% as TP area. The developed areas feature 9-metre-wide roads and essential utilities, including drainage, water supply, sewerage, and electricity connectivity. The state govt recently announced the implementation of the TP scheme in other cities, including Sambalpur and Berhampur. Several bureaucrats and researchers have also continued to visit the TP scheme sites in Bhubaneswar recently to understand the implementation process. "The BDA is setting an example in the implementation of the TP scheme. The scheme is a win-win situation for both residents and authorities. Our implementation method is unique, which is why officials from different places are visiting the site," a BDA official said.

Odisha govt to offer houses at Rs 15 lakh-Rs 50 lakh to people in Bhubaneswar: Minister Mahapatra

BHUBANESWAR : In what could come as a huge relief for aspiring home buyers amid skyrocketing real estate prices in the capital city, the state government is planning to construct and provide houses to people in an affordable range of Rs 15 lakh to Rs 50 lakh. Housing and Urban Development (H&UD) minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra on Saturday told mediapersons as part of the 'Greater Bhubaneswar and Better Bhubaneswar' initiative, the government is planning to take up housing projects in the city in which dwelling units will be provided to people at very affordable prices. 'Currently, a house in the state capital costs at least Rs 1 crore. We are planning to provide different categories of LIG (low income group) and MIG (middle income group) houses to people in the range of Rs 15 lakh to Rs 50 lakh. The H&UD department is working out a comprehensive plan in this regard,' Mahapatra said. He said the growing population of the city is leading to shortage of land in the capital city and imposing huge burden on the civic infrastructure. 'Steps are being taken to expand the capital region through implementation of town-planning schemes. The schemes implemented by the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) will expand the periphery of the city allowing people to buy houses at more affordable prices,' he said. The minster said plans are also being worked out for decongestion of traffic in the city. 'Proposals to construct overbridges at key junctions to decongest traffic is under consideration. We will also run more city buses to improve the capital's public transport system,' he added. Mahapatra stressed government focus on improving the smart city infrastructure. 'The smart city projects implemented earlier have not been fruitful. We are working on improving these infrastructure and make them effective,' he said. Action plan for Gangua nullah Bhubaneswar: The Housing and Urban Development (H&UD) department will soon work out an action plan for desiltation and cleaning of Gangua nullah and Daya West Canal to increase their carrying capacity and address the problem of urban flooding in the capital city. A team led by H&UD secretary Usha Padhee carried out a field assessment on Saturday
