Katy Perry told music star she was 'GLAD' they left American Idol... amid fears for Orlando Bloom relationship
Katy Perry 's tenure on American Idol was under the spotlight after a former contestant–turned–music superstar opened up about their interactions. According to the rising star, Katy told them she was 'glad' that they left the long-running music competition series when they ran into each other years later. Katy, 40, first joined the series as a celebrity judge for season 16 in 2018, and stepped down six years later in 2024 after season 22. It was in early 2021 that her path crossed with the future singing sensation when they competed in season 21. During an appearance Wednesday on Scott Mills' BBC Radio 2's Breakfast Show, the Grammy Award nominee Benson Boone opened up about catching up with Katy years after he decided to leave American Idol. He admitted to bumping into the singer — who has been beset by rumors that her relationship with fiancé Orlando Bloom is in trouble — a 'couple months ago' and learned that she seemed to be happy that he had quite the show. According to the rising star, Katy, 40, told them she was 'glad' that they left the long-running music competition series when they ran into each other years later; seen in 2023 in LA Boone was asked if he thought Katy believes that she had 'discovered' him on American Idol. During his stint on the series, she said on camera that he had what it took to win the competition, adding that viewers were 'gonna swoon for Benson Boone.' 'Do you want to know the actual truth?' Benson replied. 'I actually think she is really glad that I left the show.' After the two had a chance to catch up a recent awards ceremony, the TikTok sensation came away thinking that Katy was 'really happy' for him. However, he also thought she was 'really worried' for his future. 'I think she understands that when you're starting to go through all of this, like, there's just a lot of hate coming your way, a lot of people that want things from you, so she was more just checking in on me,' he explained. Though Katy was widely mocked for her recent Blue Origin space flight, Benson declared that she 'actually really is a lovely person.' 'She told me, she was like, "Leaving that show was, like, the best thing you ever did." I think she just understands, like, I didn't even know if I wanted to do music at that time.' Despite his misgivings as American Idol was poised to make him a star, Boone later found his way back to music on his own terms. He had already established himself as a popular TikTok performer and singer before auditioning for the series, but the baby-faced performer — who didn't yet have his instantly recognizable mustache — blew away Katy and fellow judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan at his audition, where he also showed that he could play passable piano. After Benson admitted that he wasn't a singer growing up, Lionel declared him a 'natural talent,' and Luke urged him to 'have fun' with his voice now that he had discovered it. Katy dramatically added, 'I'm gonna tell you something that you may not believe, but if you believe it it might happen. I see American Idol, and I see you, and I see you winning American Idol... if you want to.' An awe-struck Benson said that was the 'biggest compliment' he had ever received. He was invited to continue on to Hollywood Week, a round of multiple performances that helps weed out the large group of singers who had survived the initial auditions. But shortly after he was selected as part of the final 24 contestants, Benson opted to end his run on American Idol, which led the series to not broadcast his Hollywood Week performances. But Benson wasn't done with the music industry, and months later Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds signed him to his label Night Street Records via a deal with Warner Records. His first single, Ghost Town, just barely scraped the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with a peak at number 100, but the song had longevity after gaining exposure on TikTok, and it later was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). His 2022 single, In The Stars, did even better. It only topped out at 82 on the Hot 100, but it went on to be certified 2x Platinum. Benson's career seemed to floundering after multiple singles in 2022 and 2023 that failed to chart, but he came roaring back last year with his biggest success to date, the single Beautiful Things. The song was buoyed by its omnipresent status on TikTok and Instagram, and it reached number two on the Hot 100 and was certified 5x Platinum. Since then, he has had multiple top 40 hits, including last year's Slow It Down and this year's songs Sorry I'm Here For Someone Else and Mystical Magical. Benson looked back on his auspicious first encountering with Katy just as she has been inundated with fan fears for the state of her relationship with her fiancé Orlando Bloom. Yesterday, the 48-year-old Lord Of The Rings star was reported by TMZ to be attending Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's wedding in Italy without Katy by his side. But the absence turned out to be because Katy had a prior commitment, as she is touring in Australia at the moment. Katy's widely mocked space flight, the critical revulsion her album 143 earned and the poor reviews her ongoing tour have received have all reportedly added to the strain in her relationship with Orlando; seen with Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez in 2023 in Dubrovnik, Croatia Still, the couple have been apart for much of the past month, raising concerns of a potential split. A source previously told People magazine that 'They're pretty much done,' while an insider alleged to Page Six that 'It's over' and the two are 'just waiting until the tour is done before they split.' A friend of the couple exclusively told that the couple are 'are on the rocks' this week. Perry and Bloom first met in January 2016. They had a brief breakup in 2017, but later reconciled by March 2018. The pair got engaged on Valentine's Day in 2019 and welcomed their daughter, Daisy, in August 2020. Bloom also has a 13-year-old son named Flynn with his ex-wife, Miranda Kerr, 42. Katy's widely mocked space flight, the critical revulsion her album 143 earned and the poor reviews her ongoing tour have received have all reportedly added to the strain in her relationship with Orlando.

Benson Boone, a loud performer who's light on content
US singer songwriter Benson Boone sure has energy - after all, this is the man who, during a sensational Grammy performance of his mega hit "Beautiful Things," tore his clothes off and did a flip on stage. If this US newcomer isn't the future, then who is? And here is his new album "American Heart." Genre, number of songs, length: American pop – the 10 songs last 30:23 minutes. How it sounds: "American Heart" is an album so polished, it is like a mirror. Boone and his producers understand the craft of modern pop down to the last detail: catchy melodies, danceable beats, pointed, high-gloss productions with stadium ambitions. It's all wrapped up with a bow on it - a touch of glam, reminiscent in parts of the early Killers, but without their rough edges. "American Heart" is the sound of a pop America that likes itself. Each track gets straight to the point, never lasting much longer than three minutes, so as not to overtax the TikTok generation's attention span. What the artist is about: A kind-hearted review would say life and feelings, especially in relation to love and dating – swooning for the moment in complete freedom. But the truth is that Boone is 22 years old and definitely doesn't sound a day older. In 10 songs, we learn nothing about him, nothing about his life story, his values or why he makes music. While Chappell Roan puts queer identity at the centre of her work, Billie Eilish explores inner darkness and Taylor Swift is the chronicler of her own life struggles, Boone's "American Heart" is pretty empty. Perhaps this is the result of a deeply divided American society where any and all expression runs the risk of being politicized. Or perhaps it is the choice of a young artist who wants to do all he can to please anyone and everyone - even at the cost of his identity. In this respect, Boone and the content of his "American Heart" perhaps sum up the state of his homeland right now. What the artist says: Boone worked on his new album in the shadow of his global hit "Beautiful Things," which the whole world has probably heard by now. He told Rolling Stone magazine, "I think I'm getting to the point where I just want people to know that there's more than just that song." Recommended tracks: Those looking for the new "Beautiful Things" may not find a clear answer on this album. But the most important feel-good song is probably "Mystical Magical," which has a 70s disco vibe and a hit-worthy flow. Then there's "Momma Song," a coming-of-age anthem that Boone sings as a tribute to his mother. Who will enjoy this album: "American Heart" is a fine album for anyone looking for danceable, well-produced pop, as long as they are not bothered by the lack of depth. Boone's art lies in his presence as a performer and his infectious energy, not in the complexity of his lyrics. If you have the chance to see him live, do so! If Boone's shows on his summer tour are half as exciting as his now legendary performance at the Grammys, it will have been worth it.

Benson Boone's Radio Takeover Comes Just Before His New Album Drops
Benson Boone's 'Mystical Magical' debuts on two Billboard pop radio charts and climbs to new highs ... More on four other rankings ahead of American Heart's release. ELMONT, NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 11: Benson Boone performs onstage during the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards at UBS Arena on September 11, 2024 in Elmont, New York. (Photo byfor MTV) Benson Boone is enjoying a particularly exciting week on the airwaves in the United States, as three of his songs are currently present on various radio-focused rankings. Each tune has its own momentum, with several of them enticing audiences and exciting them for his sophomore album American Heart, which arrives tomorrow (Friday, June 20). Nearly two months after its mid-April release, American Heart single "Mystical Magical" is just starting to reveal its staying power. This frame, the tune debuts on multiple Billboard tallies, suggesting its life on the charts may be just beginning. "Mystical Magical" lands on two of Billboard's three pop radio rankings this week, just as excitement surrounding American Heart hits its peak. The track premieres at No. 37 on the Pop Airplay chart and No. 36 on the Adult Pop Airplay list, giving Boone his sixth career placement on each of those rankings. For now, the track is absent from the Adult Contemporary chart — the third of the three pop airplay tallies — but that ranking typically moves more slowly than the others, so it could still be a win in the future. Seven weeks after its initial debut on other rankings, "Mystical Magical" also hits new peaks on four Billboard charts simultaneously. The track climbs to previously unseen highs on the Hot 100, Streaming Songs chart, and both of the company's worldwide rankings at the same time. It's a huge week for the American Heart cut, which slips on just one tally, the Digital Song Sales chart. After spending a month as a bestseller, the track appears ready to depart the list. As "Mystical Magical" gains traction on the airwaves, Boone's previous single "Sorry I'm Here for Someone Else" earns new peaks on three of the four radio charts it appears on. The track breaks into the top 10 for the first time on the all-genre Radio Songs list, and narrowly misses hitting No. 1 on the Adult Pop Airplay chart, falling short by just one space. Meanwhile, Boone's breakout smash "Beautiful Things" remains a strong performer at radio more than a year after it debuted. The track continues to dominate the Adult Contemporary chart, holding at No. 1 67 weeks into its run. It also inches up to No. 15 on the Radio Songs list, nearly giving Boone a pair of top 10 hits on one of Billboard's most competitive rosters.

Benson Boone Reveals Katy Perry's Reaction to His ‘American Idol' Exit and the Advice She Gave Him
Katy Perry is supportive of Benson Boone's decision to leave American Idol prematurely back in 2021. On Wednesday, June 18, the 'Beautiful Things' hitmaker, 22, was a guest on BBC Radio 2's The Scott Mills Breakfast Show and revealed that he spoke to the 'Firework' singer, 40, about two months ago as she wanted to see how he was doing with his newfound fame. 'I actually think she is really glad that I left the show,' he shared. 'She was like really happy for me, also really worried about me. I think she understands that when you're starting to go through all this, there's just a lot of hate coming your way, a lot of people that want things from you. So, she was more just checking in on me. She was like, 'Leaving that show was like the best thing you ever did.'' Host Scott Mills clarified if the former American Idol judge meant any shade towards the show, to which Boone responded, 'No, not at all I think she just understands — I didn't even know if I wanted to do music at that time.' Boone — who was 18 years old when he appeared on the hit singing competition — recalled his experience on season 19 of the series. 'I went to the top 24, but they only aired my first episode, and then right after the episode aired, I was like, no way, absolutely no way. So I just got off the show and was very fortunate to do so,' he explained to Mills. Boone sang 'Punchline' by Aidan Martin while playing the piano for his audition. The judges, which included Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, all voted unanimously to move him into the next round and showered him with compliments. 'They're gonna swoon over Benson Boone…I'm gonna tell you something that you may not believe, but if you believe it, it might happen. I see American Idol, and I see you, and I see you winning American Idol if you want,' Perry said during his audition. Bryan, for his part, said Boone's voice was 'a true gift' and called him 'humble.' Richie, meanwhile, said he was a 'natural talent.' Boone, who got his start on TikTok, has found immense success post-Idol. He performed at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards and was nominated for the Best New Artist award. He also performed at Coachella in April and is set to drop his new album, American Heart, on Friday, June 20.

Heartbreaking moment Lola Young breaks down in tears after leaving the stage
Messy singer Lola Young has broken down in tears after being hit with technical difficulties live onstage. The 24-year-old was performing during her slot at the Capital Summertime Ball over the weekend when it all went wrong. Lola was one of many huge acts performing at this year's festival at Wembley Arena in London. Other stars included in the line-up were Mariah Carey, Benson Boone, and Tate Mcrae. Lola's set was due to begin at 4:45 pm just after Zara Larsson giving her a 15 minute time slot for her to perform her best tracks. As the singer began to sing her chart-topping hit Messy her earpiece had actually stopped working. When a singer's in ear monitor (IEM) fails it can significantly impact their ability to hear themselves affecting their performance and confidence. While she struggled on stage, Lola could be heard saying: 'Sorry guys my ears are going in and out. Can I get some new ears?' Trying to continue without it she begged the crowd to: 'Sing along please.' The popstar struggled to keep in time with the music and her band exclaiming: 'It's like they're doing it on purpose.' When her set ended the star was spotted bursting into tears after hurrying offstage. In clips uploaded to TikTok Lola can be seen visibly upset and distressed from the incident, crying into her hands as her team tried to comfort her. Fans have rushed to support the star commenting messages of support, one user said: 'I really don't see how people can hate on someone for this? It was a sound issue and the crowd loved her still, I feel bad for her but she was one of the best acts!' Another chimed: 'She smashed it.' 'I felt so bad for Lola Young. Her earpiece stopped working and everything so she came off crying,' commented a third. Some fans were angry at event organiser Capital insisting it was their sound engineer who was at fault. In a rant, one fan said: 'People don't forget Lola Young is just starting she is a young talented singer. Yesterday her ear monitor stopped working, this is not hers or her band's fault at all! This is down to the sound engineer at the Capital Summertime Ball.' 'I do feel so sorry for Lola Young and my heart is with her and I hope that she is feeling okay. Capital should feel ashamed of yourself!!' they added. Lola started writing songs aged 11, and by 13 had competed in and won a national open mic competition. She was a student at the famous Brit School in Croydon which counts Adele and Amy Winehouse has past pupils. Following the success of her single Messy last year, she enjoyed sell-out UK and US tours, and also appeared at Coachella. Lola was also nominated for Best Pop Act at this year's BRIT Awards. Some fans may also not realise that Lola has nepo-baby roots her famous aunt is Julia Donaldson, the beloved author behind children's book The Gruffalo.
