Copper network rollback could leave communities disconnected

technology rural 39 minutes ago There are alarm bells ringing for some households in remote parts of the country as Chorus looks to phase out the use of its copper network to replace with fibre. The copper network is what we need for old-school landlines and broadband internet. But the commerce commission is looking to wind it back, it has closed submissions on a draft recommendation to stop copper from being used in urban and rural areas. The Media and Communications Minister is due to make a decision by the end of the year. If it goes ahead though some people left without copper won't have access to get help in an emergency or stay connected. Bella Craig reports.

food life and society 39 minutes ago A social enterprise in the Hutt Valley said demand for basic essentials has increased since the public sector cuts. Common Unity Project Aotearoa is based in a building called the The Remakery - home to a koha cafe, community garden and textile workshop. It's been providing support to the community for over 12 years, by giving away fresh produce, clothing and and hosting training workshops. But as demand soars, so too does the need for more donations. Bella Craig reports.

Costco's cheaper priced butter brings in crowds

But people across the motu have been travelling to Auckland's Northwest to wait in line for something a little bit more unconventional: butter. The bargain butter at Auckland's Costco is bringing in the crowds to buy it in bulk. Some are even resorting to sleeping overnight outside because it is half the price of getting it from the supermarkets. The supermarket price is up to $11 for half a kilo - whereas Costco's butter is just under $10 kilo. Bella Craig reports. Dave O'Brien, co-owner of Bellbird Bakery in Christchurch spoke to Lisa Owen.
