'The Penguin' stars Cristin Milioti and Colin Farrell discuss Batman 'all the time': 'An opera about hurt people'
Cristin Milioti and Colin Farrell may play criminals in the Batman universe, but Milioti said they are big fans of the crime-fighting Dark Knight. Milioti, who plays crime ring heiress Sofia Falcone on The Penguin, shared why she's drawn to the comic book universe on the latest episode of WTF With Marc Maron. "I've been such a massive Batman fan my whole life, in particular, because it's so theatrical," she said. "Because no one has a superpower. It's gothic. Colin and I would talk about it all the time. It felt like an opera because everything is so heightened and it's like an opera about hurt people." Milioti and Maron then discussed what they believe is the best Batman iteration: Tim Burton's Batman films. The iconic pair of movies stars Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader. "It's that line between high camp but also you're devastated for them," Milioti Maron praised Danny DeVito's portrayal of Penguin in Burton's Batman Returns, Milioti is partial to Farrell's version of the villain on their show. "It's a great performance," Milioti agreed about DeVito's take on the character, "but I'm partial to my guy." Milioti has received praise for her portrayal of Falcone on The Penguin, which focuses less on Bruce Wayne and more on the power struggle between two crime bosses: Farrell's Penguin and Milioti's Falcone. While Batman isn't present in the actual series, The Penguin's finale sets up the next installment of Matt Reeves' The Batman franchise. James Gunn Reacts to Rumors 'The Batman 2' Is Canceled
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors James Gunn wants you to know "The Batman 2" is still on the way. The co-head of DC Studios spoke to Rolling Stone as part of the promotional lead-up to "Superman" and was asked about the rumors that the sequel had been scrapped. Gunn not only responded that the sequel was still in the works, but he seemed somewhat frustrated at the reports. Read More: Hugh Jackman Workout Video Has Fans Predicting Wolverine Return "It's not canceled," Gunn said. "We don't have a script. Matt's slow. Let him take his time. Let him do what he's doing. God, people are mean. Let him do his thing, man." Zoe Kravitz and Robert Pattinson in "The Batman". Zoe Kravitz and Robert Pattinson in "The Batman". Warner Bros. While Gunn's frustration may be understandable, it's likewise difficult to blame fans for wondering about the status of the sequel. Production on "The Batman 2" was supposed to begin at some point this year, but as Gunn himself notes, writer/director Matt Reeves has yet to finish the script. There's also the fact that, even if production on "The Batman 2" isn't delayed, the film won't hit theaters until the second half of 2027, over five years after the first movie bowed. In comparison, both Tim Burton's "Batman Returns" and Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" were released three years after their predecessors. There's also the question of whether or not Robert Pattinson might age out of the role. The "Twilight" alum was 35 when "The Batman" hit theaters in 2022 and will be in his forties by the time "The Batman 2" sees the light of day. Pattinson himself even joked about the age difference back in March. Asked whether or the sequel would come out soon, Pattinson said, "I f---ing hope so. I started out as young Batman and I'm going to be f---ing old Batman by the sequel." Along with DC Studios still standing firmly behind "The Batman 2", Gunn also commented on "The Brave and the Bold", saying it was one his biggest priorities. "I'm not writing Batman, but I am working with the writer of Batman and trying to get it right," Gunn said. "Our 2 priorities are finishing our Wonder Woman & our Batman scripts." Fans desperate for new Batman content have some good news. "Batman Ninja Vs. Yakuza League" has its streaming debut coming on July 3 on Max. The sequel to 2018's "Batman Ninja" pits the Dark Knight against warped anime versions of the Justice League. Danny DeVito makes shocking admission about ‘lusting after' Michelle Pfeiffer
Danny DeVito made a shocking admission about his former co-star Michelle Pfeiffer. The 80-year-old confided in Collin Farrell for Variety's Actors on Actors series, published Monday, that he 'lusted after' the Scarface star while working with her in Batman Returns. 'She was a goddess,' DeVito said of Pfeiffer while discussing the actresses who played Catwoman alongside him and Farrell in their respective Batman films. Both veteran actors played the iconic villain Penguin, aka Oswald Cobblepot - DeVito in Tim Burton's 1992 film and Farrell in Matt Reeves' The Batman. Farrell shared that he did a 'couple of scenes' with Zoë Kravitz, who played Catwoman in the 2022 film. 'She was wonderful,' he added. Meanwhile, DeVito gushed over Pfeiffer, saying, 'If I knew she was going to be in a scene that day… I got all flushed.' The Man on the Moon star joked that he would 'put extra makeup on — 'Give me another pound of makeup.' It was very difficult.' When Farrell asked what it was like working with Pfeiffer, DeVito said, 'Just so wonderful. And I lusted after her.' 'We're moving on from your lust. Just tell me what form did the lust take, behaviorally?' Farrell quipped, to which the Dumbo star remarked, 'It was Oswald [his character] that was lustful.' When the Thirteen Lives actor asked if Pfeiffer was 'nervous' working with him and if she called security, DeVito joked, 'I kind of feel like she liked it. She liked Oswald.' Elsewhere in the interview, the duo discussed method acting. 'Did you take it home with you at all? If a character you're playing is having very extreme thoughts, emotions, behaviors, it doesn't come home at all?' Farrell asked. DeVito said, 'No, I go home to Rhea [Perlman] and the kids,' adding, 'I played some really despicable characters; you've got to shed that.'

Danny DeVito Recalls Crushing on Co-star Michelle Pfeiffer During Batman Returns: 'She Was a Goddess'
Danny DeVito recently shared how he felt working alongside Michelle Pfeiffer on Tim Burton's 1992 film Batman Returns. In an interview for Variety's Actors on Actors series, DeVito described Pfeiffer as a 'goddess' and admitted, 'I lusted after her.' Playing the Penguin to Pfeiffer's Catwoman, he confessed that her presence made him self-conscious. 'If I knew she was going to be in a scene that day…I got all flushed. Put extra makeup on, 'Give me another pound of makeup.' It was very difficult,' DeVito recalled. DeVito clarified that it was his character, Oswald Cobblepot, not him personally, who was 'lustful.' He laughed when co-star Colin Farrell asked if Pfeiffer ever called security on him. DeVito replied, 'I kind of feel like she liked it. She liked Oswald.' His remark suggests that Pfeiffer appreciated the energy he brought as a Penguin. Despite playing a despicable character, DeVito made it clear he never carried that role home. Asked whether he ever took the character home, Danny DeVito firmly replied that he went home to Rhea Perlman and the kids. DeVito and Perlman have been married since 1982 and share three children: Lucy, Gracie, and Jack. Though the couple separated in 2017, they remain married. DeVito shared that regardless of the brutal or despicable roles he plays, he always sheds that persona once he leaves the set. Meanwhile, Michelle Pfeiffer continues to impress fans with stunning, makeup-free selfies that showcase her ageless looks. In April, she was honored with a hand and footprints ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, appearing in a chic black suit and satin blouse. Pfeiffer has been married to TV writer and producer David E. Kelley since 1993. The couple shares two children: Claudia, 32, and John, 30. DeVito and Farrell also discussed their views on alcohol. Farrell, sober since 2005, influenced DeVito to cut back. DeVito admitted he still enjoys just a sip of wine and likes gin martinis with cigars. However, when he's on the health kick, he avoids alcohol altogether. Both actors agreed they feel much better without heavy drinking.

Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman Is Legendary, And I Love Hearing Danny DeVito's Candid Thoughts About Working With And 'Lusting After' Her In Batman Returns
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. There will always be debates over who the best live-action Batman was on the big screen, but, with apologies to Anne Hathaway and Zoë Kravitz, I'm not sure there's any real argument over who the best on-screen Catwoman has been. It has to have been Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns. Pfeiffer's Catwoman was absolutely iconic, though her wearing a skintight body suit may have had a lot to do with that. One person who clearly loved Pfeiffer in Batman Returns was her co-star Danny DeVito. In the new Actors on Actors from Variety, DeVito talks with modern Penguin Colin Farrell, and he admits that he would go the extra mile if he knew he was sharing a scene with the actress. DeVito said… I had Michelle Pfeiffer. I'm not comparing anything, but I'm just saying, she was a goddess. If I knew she was going to be in a scene that day. . . . I got all flushed. Put extra makeup on — 'Give me another pound of makeup.' It was very difficult. Michelle Pfeiffer was only brought in to play Selena Kyle in Batman Returns after Annette Bening became pregnant and couldn't play the role. Pfeffer went on to create the version of Catwoman that all others would be compared to. It is almost certainly one of the sexiest performances in any comic book movie. DeVito says he loved working with the iconic actress, and can't help but mention the sex appeal element, saying… Just so wonderful. And I lusted after her. To be clear, DeVito isn't talking about himself lusting after Michelle Pfeiffer here. He's pointing out that lusting after Catwoman was part of his character, Oswald Cobblepot. Having said that, it doesn't sound like the actor minded much. When asked by Colin Farrell how the actress might have felt about all this, DeVito thinks Michelle Pfeiffer enjoyed it all. He added... I kind of feel like she liked it. She liked Oswald. To be fair, everybody is lusting after Catwoman in Batman Returns, it's very much intentional, as Selina Kyle uses her sex appeal to her advantage throughout the film. It's a significant part of the movie, and also a significant part of the reason that many parents, and corporate sponsors, were upset with Batman Returns. It was seen as too mature regarding both sex and violence for a Batman movie, and led to the major realignment of tone that we would see under Joel Schumacher with Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. Danny DeVito clearly loved making Batman Returns, and the rest of us still love watching it. It's one of the best, if not the best, big-screen Batman adventures to date. That's not entirely because Michelle Pfeiffer is so unforgettable, but it certainly doesn't hurt.
