Iraq condemns US attack on Iranian nuclear sites

Shafaq News/ The Iraqi government denounced on Sunday the US-Israeli strikes on Iran's nuclear sites, warning that the escalation threatens to destabilize the entire Middle East. In an official statement, government spokesman Basim Al-Awadi described the attacks as a blatant violation of Iranian sovereignty and a serious threat to regional peace and security. He stressed that the targeted sites fall under International Atomic Energy Agency oversight and are designated for peaceful use, urging international protection in line with international law. Al-Awadi reaffirmed Iraq's position that 'military action can never serve as a substitute for diplomacy,' cautioning that continued strikes could ignite a wider conflict with consequences extending far beyond the current parties involved. 'Wars leave only destruction in their wake,' he warned, calling on global powers to act with restraint and responsibility to prevent further escalation. The government urged all parties to pursue immediate de-escalation and revive diplomatic efforts, reaffirming Iraq's commitment to collective peace under the UN Charter. The statement comes amid soaring regional tensions following coordinated US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites—Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan—and subsequent Iranian missile launches that targeted Israeli territory.

Iraq denounces Israeli strike on Iran: UN must take firm measures

Shafaq News/ On Friday, the Iraqi Government strongly condemned Israel's military strikes on Iran, calling the attack a 'blatant violation' of international law and a grave threat to global peace and security. In a statement, Government Spokesman Basim Al-Awadi said, 'This act represents a blatant violation of the fundamental principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations.' Al-Awadi noted the timing of the attack—coinciding with ongoing US-Iran nuclear negotiations—underscores its destabilizing intent and urged the international community not to remain silent. 'Mere statements of condemnation are no longer sufficient,' he stated. 'The international position must be translated into practical and deterrent actions.' The Iraqi government called on the United Nations Security Council to convene an emergency session and take 'firm and tangible measures' to prevent further aggression and to reassert the credibility of international legal norms. Should current mechanisms fail, Baghdad urged world powers to initiate discussions on new frameworks for global accountability and justice. Reaffirming Iraq's commitment to sovereignty, non-aggression, and peaceful dispute resolution, Al-Awadi expressed solidarity with the Iranian people and all nations 'who believe in a just international order based on respect for rules rather than their violation, and on the rule of law, not the law of the jungle.'

Al-Awadi Denies Prime Minister's Involvement in Determining Eid al-Fitr Dates

Baghdad – INA Government spokesperson Basim Al-Awadi on Monday denied any involvement by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani in determining the dates for Eid al-Fitr, expressing regret that some politicians are attempting to drag religious institutions into power struggles. In response to a question from the Iraqi News Agency (INA), Al-Awadi stated, 'Claims that the government or the prime minister played a role in confirming the sighting of the crescent moon and setting the date for Eid al-Fitr are entirely baseless and false.' He emphasized that 'the prime minister believes in granting religious institutions their rightful authority in such matters and distances himself from these issues, as they fall within the purview of religious scholars, clerics, and legitimate institutions. These entities alone are responsible for determining religious dates and rulings.' Al-Awadi added that Al-Sudani remains committed to respecting all beliefs within Iraq's diverse religious landscape.

Al-Sudani orders investigation, internet bandwidth smuggling and IQ contracts

Shafaq News/ Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani, on Tuesday, directed the Federal Integrity Commission to investigate the procedures of the Ministry of Communications regarding cases of internet bandwidth smuggling. Government spokesperson Basim Al-Awadi said in a statement that "Sudani instructed the Federal Integrity Commission to examine the transit bandwidth agreement of IQ Internet Services Company, in coordination with the Parliamentary Integrity Committee, and to clarify whether there are any new contracts with the aforementioned company." On January 7, Iraqi Communications Minister Hayam Al-Yasiri signed an agreement with IQ and CBI companies regarding fiber optics, aimed at providing one terabit of internet bandwidth within the country, complementing marine and land transport networks. In her press conference on that day, Al-Yasiri stated that the project, initiated by the Ministry of Communications in 2010, is now seeing accelerated results, with bandwidth rising from 10 gigabytes to 1.6 terabits. The minister considered the agreement a strategic step to transform Iraq into a central hub for international telecommunications networks, with the potential to attract global investments.
