Why Dave Portnoy thinks Americans are abandoning traditional news outlets
Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy said that there is 'obviously big time distrust of legacy media' during an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital. Portnoy's comments come in response to a Fox Digital report that CNN staffers are worried about the future of the former most-watched cable network. 'It is obviously big-time distrust of legacy media,' Portnoy explained. 'And there's so many different ways to consume media. Whether that's online podcasts, some of it good, some of it bad, to be honest, you just have to be really careful where you're getting your information from. There's so many different people speaking now, and people can access it in so many ways.' CNN dominated the airwaves in the '90s, leading coverage on Baghdad and the O.J. Simpson trial. Since then, prime-time viewership has plummeted from the Ted Turner-founded network to third in ratings. On Monday, Variety reported that one of the network's most notable stars, Anderson Cooper, hired high-powered Hollywood agent Bryan Lourd of Creative Artists Agency, which may indicate Cooper is either looking to bolster his contract with CNN or potentially leave the network altogether. Dave Portnoy Goes Scorched Earth on WNBA Player After She Drops ‘Face of the League' Caitlin Clark
Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy was livid after Connecticut Sun guard Marina Mabrey slammed Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark to the floor following a dust-up in their game Tuesday evening. The incident began when Sun guard Jacy Sheldon poked Clark in the eye while defending her, prompting a personal foul call. Clark fans surely had flashbacks to last year's playoffs, when then-Sun player DiJonai Carrington poked her, leaving her with a noticeable black eye and a tough shooting night. The crowd was angry. Clark, frustrated, bumped Sheldon in response, leading to a confrontation. Mabrey then intervened, forcefully shoving Clark to the ground from behind during a dead ball. 'Imagine not kicking Marina Mabrey out after she assaults the face of the league?' Portnoy posted on X. 'Sick league @WNBA.' Portnoy also suggested Clark should not have gotten a technical on the play, considering her bump was in response to being jabbed in the eye. Not to mention, she could be forgiven for not being able to see who she was running into. After the game, crew chief Ashley Gloss told reporters, according to the New York Post, that Mabrey's actions did not rise to the level of an ejection. She wasn't even hit with a flagrant foul call. 'The contact made by Mabrey did not rise to the level of an ejection,' Gloss said. 'Additionally, [it] did not meet the criteria for a flagrant foul penalty two.' Of course it did. Unquestionably. Sheldon was given a flagrant for her actions due to the potential for injury, but at least it came during a basketball play. Mabrey trucking the league's star out of nowhere during a dead ball is an easy ejection call. The league lacks the backbone for it. They continue to allow Clark to get hammered on the court because, in their view, she's a recipient of privilege. It's disgraceful. A hard foul in response from a player who can take the ejection so Clark doesn't have to retaliate herself will help other WNBA players think twice about getting physical with the star of the league. Cunningham, when the Fever signed her in the off-season, made it quite clear that she was ready to support her teammate and handle any intimidation tactics opponents might use against the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year. 'Just the competitor that I am, I'm fierce, I'm sassy,' Cunningham said. 'I stick up for my teammates. I stick up for myself. Sometimes, I think that's okay to be feisty and be yourself.' Clark didn't have teammates willing to stick up for her last season, which is why players in the league think they can continue to hammer her on the court. It's good to see Cunningham step up. Portnoy, in a separate post, suggested Mabrey should be 'kicked outta the league.' Barstool Sports chief Dave Portnoy took a brutal shot at Stephen A. Smith over the sports media personality's controversial take on Caitlin Clark. Clark and the WNBA were once again thrust into the spotlight Tuesday night when the Indiana Fever superstar found herself at the center of a number of on-court skirmishes. In a tense clash against the Sun, Clark was jabbed in the eye by Connecticut's Jacy Sheldon, who had previously been caught in a heated exchange with the Fever guard, before being slammed to the floor by Marina Mabrey in a violent moment which sparked outrage online. However, Smith suggested Clark wasn't entirely innocent in the shocking on-court outburst, which is just the latest in a number directed at the Iowa product. 'Clearly, when it comes to Caitlin Clark, there's some resentment, as I've articulated before. What people are missing, Monica, is that I have no problem with it whatsoever,' Smith told Monica McNutt during Wednesday's episode of 'First Take'. But a furious Portnoy, who had expressed his outrage at Mabry Tuesday night, took issue with Smith's version of events as he used a 'Jeopardy!' reference to shut down the ESPN analyst. 'I'll take things that never happened but ESPN always pretends did for 100 Alex. Less solitaire. More facts @1stephenasmith,' Portnoy wrote on X in response to a clip of Smith's take. The American businessman further rubbed salt in the wound by taking a dig at Smith's courtside game of solitaire. Smith, who earlier this year signed a $100million ESPN contract, was caught playing the card game on his phone during the NBA Finals, where he was working for the network last week. Clark had been prodded in the eye by Sheldon during the second quarter of the Fever's 88-71 win. When the Indiana superstar reacted angrily to being struck by Sheldon, the latter's teammate, Mabrey, raced over and slammed her to the floor in a violent moment which sparked outrage online. Somehow she avoided an ejection from the game despite the shove being unprovoked, much to the dismay of WNBA fans - including Portnoy. The Barstool founder called for 'jealous loser' Mabrey to be kicked out of the league over her attack on Clark. Partway through his lengthy rant, Portnoy once again turned his focus to the Sun player, adding: 'Then bang, Marina Mabrey... who if you don't know who that is, she's been on 32 different teams in two years, she cries, whines, leaves one team, goes to another, demands a trade... she's an irrelevant journeyman. She runs up to Caitlin after the whistle and f***ing slams into her and knocks her down. An obvious ejection! 'Marina Mabrey look in the mirror. The reason that you have any money before the end of your career is number two two. Nobody even cared who you were until she got into the league. So cheap shot her like that, what are you? Dumb? 'More importantly, the league, the refs, you're going to let people take cheap shots like that over and over and over at the face of your league? The future of your league? The most important player in your league? How do you not eject her?' The WNBA came out Wednesday and admitted that Mabrey should have faced harsher punishment for her part in the on-court skirmish. Mabrey's technical has been upgraded to a flagrant 2, which would have brought about an ejection had it been dished out on the night.

Sofia Franklyn Compares Herself To Scooter Braun
Former Call Her Daddy host Sofia Franklyn just compared her departure from the podcast to one of the biggest music industry feuds, and it's a rather bold statement. Sofia hosted the Call Her Daddy podcast alongside her roommate, Alex Cooper, from 2018 to 2020. Today, Sofia is the host of her own hit podcast, Sofia with an F. In her new Hulu docuseries Call Her Alex, Alex explained that she and Sofia signed a three-year contract and a "70 grand" deal with Barstool Sports at the beginning of their podcast together. When the popularity of Call Her Daddy skyrocketed, the co-hosts renegotiated their pay in 2020. In the series, Alex said Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy told them, "If you stay at Barstool for one more year, you can own Call Her Daddy."According to the series, Sofia didn't want to take the new deal and decided to leave the podcast, to which Alex said, "I realized the 'Daddy Gang' was bigger than both of us," and believes she made the correct decision. Speaking of her dynamic with Sofia, Alex also said in the docuseries, "It was the classic, 'You think you see something online and people genuinely believe you're like sisters, but our relationship was so awful.'" On June 16, Sofia appeared on the Trading Secrets podcast with Bachelor alum Jason Tartick to explain her side of the exit from Call Her Daddy, and that's when she compared it to the drama between Taylor Swift and Scooter Braun. Sofia has remained relatively quiet about her exit from the podcast. Now, she finally explained that she made this decision out of fear of "looking crazy" if she was honest about her fallout with Alex. However, she could relate to how people were "villainized" in the situation between Taylor and Scooter. In 2019, Scooter acquired Taylor Swift's catalog, which ignited a very public feud between the two, with Scooter receiving a lot of backlash. Taylor went on to re-record and release four studio albums. In May 2025, Taylor announced that she had finally bought back her music catalog. Sofia told Jason that Scooter is a dream podcast guest based on what he experienced during the feud over Taylor's masters. "When I saw the Taylor Swift stuff and looked into it, he looked like a horrible human being," Sofia said. "Then in hindsight, when I was really looking at the details, it's like, well ... he bought something legally ... He was so villainized." What makes Sofia's comparison a miss, in my opinion, is that Scooter and Taylor's feud goes beyond his purchase of the label Big Machine Records, which included Taylor's music, and the subsequent sale to another company. Scooter was Kanye West's (now Ye) manager during his 2016 beef with Taylor, and she has apparently considered him her nemesis for awhile. Their feud even resulted in Taylor being labeled a "snake" and blasted on social media. Scooter was even pictured in a screenshot from a FaceTime call with Ye and Justin Bieber with the caption: "Taylor swift what up." Scooter's proximity to Taylor's situation with Kanye over the release of his controversial song "Famous" and even the footage Kim Kardashian released later in an attempt to discredit the "Karma" singer, it's no surprise she wasn't a fan of her music catalog being even referenced that photo of Scooter, Justin, and Ye, claiming she received "incessant, manipulative bullying" from Scooter, like "when Kim Kardashian orchestrated an illegally recorded snippet of a phone call to be leaked and then Scooter got his two clients together to bully me online about it." Perhaps the split of the Call Her Daddy hosts was as toxic as the Taylor and Scooter drama that lasted over many years and involved several high-profile celebrities with the internet fandoms blowing it out of proportion — but I personally would never want to compare myself to that.
